I'm going to be pretty honest with myself and say 2023 is a year I haven't really been thinking about new releases. It was sort of like that with 2022 honestly and I kinda remember only wanting to maybe get like... 3-4 games that year, that's about it. Much a departure of how I was during 2020 and 2021 when there was a ton of new games I was looking forward to and I just couldn't keep track.

Maybe it just comes with getting older, but honestly I really haven't thought about the new games that are going to be making a release this year. I know there are some that are going to be pretty big releases and that's more then fine, but I guess with not having many finances I really didn't get too big into gaming.

I kinda want to show you all a a list of the Games I've played just to show where I'm even getting at.

Nobody Saves the World
Pkmn Legends Arceus
Pkmn Scar/Vio (The Pokemon Games have Problems yeah but I still enjoyed 'em regardless)
Kirby and the Forgotten Lands
Sonic Frontiers
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series
Splatoon 3
Elden Ring

And that's really it, it kinda just feels like I really didn't play much last year and that's kinda just not having interest for you. I'm sure once more games release this year I'm probably going to play them and really enjoy them but so far it just kind of seems... I wouldn't say lackluster, but certainly haven't really been pulled towards anything.

To be fair, there haven't been that many announcements for games that come out this year yet. There have been a bunch of big games announced for this year but more than half of the games that come out in a year usually get announced during the year so I'm sure there's going to be a bunch more big titles later on.

I'm an old school type of gamer, so I am not really into new games. Unless its a Mega Man, Mario, or Kirby game. I might be a little biased but this lineup does not look impressive. I would suspect a lot more games to be released.

Not getting political here. But I wonder if the list is short because not many people are working, is it due to the high inflation that is still plaguing a lot of countries, or something else.

Granted its only January so its possible more games get added. In the past games that were coming out the following year were announced the previous year.

For example games that would come out in 2000 were announced in 1999.

MrKokoPudgeFudge : That really isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, I played much more during 2021.

zanderlex : I'm like Excited for Breath of the Wild 2 but I literally cannot say that there's anything else on my mind which probably is just because I haven't really exposed myself to looking out more for those games. I wouldn't say I'm really that particularly picky either. I guess just not a lot really has been in my mind lately for the stuff I want to play. I guess it's also me wanting to get through some of the other games I have and yet to of completed yet.

tornadocam : I think I can agree with that, I usually just tend to look forward to games more when they're attached to IPs I'm already familiar with so it's why I probably didn't spend so much time looking for them at the end of the day. Elden Ring alone gave me like... 100+ Hours so honestly I think I just got a bit comfortable.

Maybe I'll try to look out for more Indie Games this year and kind of broaden my horizons instead of playing the same games I usually do, but probably not at the same time lol

The reason why we see less games this year is a result of the working from home people have been doing over the past 2 or 3 years. It had very little impact on projects that were nearing completion or were making progress, but anything that was in the pre-production phase or in early stages had very little room to jump off from when it comes to AAA releases that require mass coordination and deadlines in order to not take a decade each to create. It's the same reason our economic situation has faltered as well, as the economy was not being fed for a couple of years and only recently started to see returns within the entertainment industry specifically, we have seen a massive decrease in spending across every medium. Musicians say they can only rely on touring which has been inaccessible and monopoly owned, television producers and filmmakers alike have had their shows cancelled mid-production, mid-airing, and sometimes after the product had already been completed and released as a tax write off for the corporation, never to be heard of again. We've even seen HBO Max remove Looney Tunes episodes out of their spending cuts.

Given the massive budget we see in current video games, it's no wonder that production times on new titles in development are going to take far longer to create.

However, the drought we're seeing for consumers in the video game market is not here to stay. Many studios have picked development back up in 2021 and 2022, and a lot of the time, current development cycles would dictate that we'll have a couple of massive new reveals for 2023 to be released either at the end of the year or for 2024. Which is better news than "Here's your Zelda now get out" from the entire gaming market.

I'm actually looking forward to a lot this year, which is surprising since usually I don't really care about most releases. I don't think I've had a hype year since like, 2016 maybe, but this year is looking pretty good. Here's my personal list:

- Like A Dragon: Ishin!
- Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
- Atelier Ryza 3
- GrimGrimoire OnceMore
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Ghostrunner 2
- Spider-Man 2
- Hollow Knight: Silksong (lol. 2023? we'll see)
- PALWORLD!!!!
- I'm also interested in that new SpongeBob game that got announced some time ago, but I want to see more from it.

My backlog of games that I'm very much looking forward to playing that don't release this year is *huge* as well. I went from not really playing games lately to being completely enamored with a lot of the ones I've been playing. The last time I played a game that I walked out with an unfavorable opinion was quite a few years ago. I'm sure I have low standards, but I think I'll call myself lucky in consistently picking good games.

It's a nice change of pace to be excited for both upcoming and already-released-but-I-haven't-played-yet games, since I didn't really use to have that feeling before. I think MGSV broke my ability to be hype for upcoming titles for a long time lol.

Part of the problem is indeed getting old, as you become a lot more selective about what you want to play. It's not like you need high expectations on a game, but rather that you don't become as easily driven as before. That's why you sometimes turn away from franchises, they don't have that same magic they had before (not counting all the changes it might receive and similar things).

I've pretty much seen it after I had my stint of being addicted to videogames as my only source to escape from a world I didn't want to live in. I had many games for the PSX, Gamecube, GBA and even Wii, but from then on I went downhill quite quickly. Between PS3, PSP and PS4 I don't think I equal the number of games I own for the Wii (and I'm still getting games for PS4).

I'm only interested in a couple of new games for 2023, and I honestly doubt that number will increase much. Not because we're not getting good games or whatever, but because I've grown disinterested in a lot of concepts that 15 years ago would have me head over heels for them. Tekken is the best example, I'm absolutely indifferent about Tekken 8 just as I was for 7 despite having cherished the first three entries for the PSX.

Once you're interested in less games you also dedicate less time to them, meaning they pile up in a list waiting to be played. That also lowers your interest in new additions, as you're aware you may not dedicate time to them yet and so you become distant with it. If you keep the fire burning and still enjoy playing games there will be some picking your interest every year, but getting to own them is a much different thing.

alexanyways : I personally don't have an issue with the amount of games in reality more so that I guess I haven't really felt super excited about anything releasing this year. Honestly I actually kinda prefer the idea of having less games released throughout the year cause it really helps for me to look forward to things.

I partially believe I got major burnout seeing "X game developer you're familiar with is releasing tons of new titles" and I always have been kinda iffy with that. Much rather the quality of the title be something excellent and I can spend a ton of time with rather then something that doesn't really have the passion and time to really want to play. I've already expressed it in the discord but I think that Square has been one of the most guilty parties of this. They released so many games in the past 2 years that some of them just don't feel all that special to me. Even when they're extremely great, I just haven't pushed myself to play it because I just don't feel excited enough to.

On the other hand I argue that I also think some things are just not to my taste and I kinda realize that. I see Triple A games a lot of the time and pass them up because it really doesn't tend to get me. I've been playing a lot of RPGs recently and sometimes I would just play Multiplayer games I'm already familiar with because I want to spend time with my friends and that's just how is.

Though Like I've said before I'll probably take this year to try to search out for more games to play and keep myself busy with. I'm always interested in trying new games just as long as it doesn't destroy my finances lmao

Minuano: The Spongebob game defo was one on my mind but I didn't have it on the Tip of my Tongue at the time when I was writing down this thread. I admit that I've fallen out a bit with gaming but not to the point where I "Never want to play video games again" but I guess more so in the way that I just really been putting it on the backburner for my work and all that.

I'm glad to still see people have a lot of interest in gaming as a whole ofc and I kind of wish that was me. I guess to a degree I'm excited for anything that might be coming around the corner and hasn't been announced, but we'll see how that turns out.

Personally just tend to watch other people play games that interest me now and days and usually get my fill from that so probably could be a benefactor for how I'm feeling. If I ever get so interested in a game I watch from a stream I go ahead and buy the game and start playing myself. Very glad to hear you're excited for some games that will be coming out this year though.

Right now I have been excited for fighting games. Street Fighter 6 coming next week, Mortal Kombat 1... ehhh I want to see gameplay to give me interest or pass (even though I have been invested on the story mode since Mortal Kombat 9). Tekken 8 trailers and characters peaked my interest, even though it is mot coming out till next year.

Resident evil 4 remake was a great game. Like honestly, capcom has been hitting home with releases this year and the year before, and hope they can keep on with the momentum.

I haven't been this hyped about releases (Fighting game and horror game fanatic aside from Fifa) since the Mortal Kombat 11 trailer a few years ago and since then been in a rut of playing Fifa, though I am probably retiring from playing the series this year after EA lost the Fifa License... 23 years with the soccer franchise.
