Just out of curioisity, how many words can a post be before it loses your attention or you decide to skip ahead a bit usually?

I'll be honest and say that I don't always read every single post in a thread in it's entirety, even if it's only a page or two long. However, I do read a post in it's entirety before replying to it specifically, and I always read the opening post before posting in a thread.

But then comes the reading of a few posts between the first and my own. There are a few things that can make me quit reading a post in the middle of it, but one of the biggest is an unnecessarily long post, and yes, I know I'm the king of those. However I do figure the person who I'm replying to will be interested enough to read it even if it's long (that's the exception I make anyway), and that's what really matters. But yeah, you reply to a thread that I didn't make and use 1,000+ words? I probably won't read it all.

But what about you? How long can a post get before you'll no longer bother to read it? Please answer each of the following:

•What's the longest opening post you'll read without skipping?
•What's the longest reply directly to you that you'll read without skipping?
•What's the longest random post (post not made in reply to you, nor as an opening post) you'll read without skipping?

And please don't say you'll read any post that's interesting. Nobody will sit through a, say, 10,000 word post about a game, show, YT channel, or whatever else. Not all at once anyway. Be honest: too many words can turn away even the most scholarly among us.

tl;dr

I stopped reading after the first line.It depends on the context. Sometimes, a tl;dr isn't needed, because I want to read the full thing. But when I know exactly what someone is going to say, and it's clear what their point is, tl;dr becomes a need, so I can grasp if there's anything not obvious in their point.

In your case, it was clear what your point was. You are asking us how long it takes before something gets to a case where tl;dr is acceptable. I've read posts as long as 7,000 words, I've skipped over words of ones as short as 30 words.

Provided the post captures my interest, I will literally sit through all of it to get the point the author is trying to make.

I can honestly say it depends on how tired I am, how bored I am, or even how willing I am to read it. I do both actually, skim and read the entire thing. If I am not interested in reading, I skim to get the point and then respond as if I have a clue Like I did now I have the time and patience to read 10,000 words and it really depends on subject. If I am totally invested in the article I am reading, I will read it. I have read a million word fanfic once, so I have the time and sanity required

For me, it really has to do with the subject matter. For the most part, in very long posts I will skim through. If its something important or something that interests me I will read all of a longer post carefully.

Same for me as Van, really. It's hard to say how long of a post I'll read because it's hard to gauge how much any given topic will prevent an ADD moment. Generally speaking, I'll read fairly long posts if I'm discussing something with someone, even if I don't reply immediately. If it's something I don't really have interest in or I don't think my opinion is qualified, I'll leave it alone. If I had to put a hard cap on it though, I'd be hard pressed to force myself to read more than 1,500-2,000 words in a single post in one sitting. Basically why I've never finished a novel...

If it's anything I plan on replying to, I'll definitely read the full post no matter how long it is. If not I suppose it really depends on the subject matter, can I sit through a 10k post? Yes if I find it really captures my attention or is on a matter I have a lot to say on, I read articles comparable in that to length and I've made several 3-4k word threads so it would be a bit hypocritical if I didn't. Most of the time I won't though.Of course my mood also comes into play, if I'm pressed for time or very tired after a long day I might end up skimming through a post or ignoring it when I wouldn't usually. I'd say the risk for that happening is probably at 2-3k+ words . I'm only human, and on this site out of a vested interest after all, if I'm entirely forcing myself to read posts then that would be going past the point.

I look at who wrote the reply, go "meh" and move on.

I mean, I usually read the full post, most of the time I'll read it a 2nd time as well if it's something that's directed to me and that I'll be replying back to.

If it's a thread that's about a direct question like this, I'll agree with Leggy, in this case you don't really need to loo past the title to see what the question is.

The longest post I have read without getting skipping would probably be about 3000 words.

Honestly, nobody can sit through a long post without skipping through it. Although, typically longer posts mean someone is saying a lot of detailed info. So while long, it is informational. It's unfortunate that most people have shorter attention spans. What I try to is split my posts up into paragraphs to make for reading shorter sections. Another, if you can do it, is to type it out as though you are writing an article or something. Choose word or structures that would make it interesting.

On the other board I go to, when people have a long post or have a link to a long-reading article they always type a short cliff note at the end as a brief explanation to what a post synopsis is. That way if people find it interesting then they'll go back and read the detail.

Something like- Cliffs: People skip through longs posts. Have paragraphs in your posts. Choose words/structure wisely. Put cliffs for long posts.

If a post has hundreds of words, in a cluster, I certainly won't bother reading much of it.

If they don't get to the point early and then give supporting evidence, I usually give up pretty quickly. I'm not a fan of reading click bait articles or where the author beats around the bush.

Tell me what you're going to say and then say it. If it's well written and interesting, I'll stick with it. If it lags, doesn't tell me anything, or if the writing or punctuation is poorly done, I'm done with it.

And I don't need a perfect paragraph with Chicago-style referencing. I just want words that work when they're strung together, I want to feel some kind of emotion, and I want to come away from reading it better than I was before.

That's why the board can get so weak some times. Some times it's just people talking about their favorite ice cream flavor and the answer is literally, "Grape nuts" and that's all they have. I don't follow any of those posts. They drive me nuts.

I don't have to have deep thoughts all the time but I do demand entertaining ones that are more than five words. I'll read the big posts as long as they keep me drawn in.

•What's the longest opening post you'll read without skipping?

It depends on the thread. If it's a fic or story, I might read all of it. If it's like the Tour de Vizzed One, where the info is already known, it'd be TL;DR. Otherwise, about 1k words or so is TL;DR.

•What's the longest reply directly to you that you'll read without skipping?

As long as it's not too long, it won't be TL;DR. About 2k or so before it becomes too long.

•What's the longest random post (post not made in reply to you, nor as an opening post) you'll read without skipping?

Much shorter than the others, unless it's a continuation of a story or such.

Unless I'm in a hurry, I don't mind reading a long post if it has a consistent direction and it's about something I'm interested in reading. However, if there's a lack of grammar and it's difficult to follow, I'll skim through it to see if I can understand the main idea.

I'd say the longest opening post I'll read without skipping is about 300 words, if it's high quality. The longest reply to me that I'll read in its entirety is about 500 words. I can be selfish at times so if a post is to me/about me, I'll have an easier time reading the whole thing. XD The longest random post I'll read when scrolling through a thread is 100 words because I don't like reading long posts in a random place in a thread.

I feel like such a nerd going into detail about this
