Yesterday, my parents and i received a letter from someone, saying something that shocked my entire family.

My mother's mother had 14 siblings, so we have an enormous family. And more and more people in my family have/had cancer or died of it. Now, yesterday, my mother's only contact that is also her family (her cousin, to be exact) sent us a letter from the hospital. This letter said the family (the ENTIRE family) probably has something in their DNA that causes the cancer to come more likely. That means (but it's not confirmed yet) that if my mother has it, i can have it too. But my father almost has no one in his family who died of cancer. So his family decreases the chance of cancer and the thing that is in my family's DNA. Still, it can be like so that my mother 'gave' me more of what i am than my father did. Luckily enough, he 'gave' me the most things i have now.

Still, my mother can have that one thing in her DNA. But i don't want her to die when i'm 17 or 18, let go when i'm young overall. She refuses to check if this thing in her DNA is there.

And that's basically what i have to tell now. I heard this yesterday at 23:30 PM in the Netherlands, as they told me this. And my mom asked me if she had to check, but 1 hour and 30 minutes later i had no chance to answer anymore.

You may be genetically predisposed to have cancer but I wasn't aware there's a specific gene that puts a gun to your head regarding cancer and says, "Yes, you will have this."

My wife is a doctor at a university hospital and she keeps on top of the newest cancer information. I went to go get checked for cancer a few weeks back when I found a spot but that doctor laughed and said, "Nope, it's just a spot."

My family does not have much in the way of cancer. Cancer can be genetic and it can make it more likely for you to get it but you are much more likely to get hit by a bus tomorrow vs. getting cancer in the next five or ten years.

I think you have good odds. Get yourself checked, keep ahead of everything, and remember that early detection gives you the best chance to live a long, happy life. It's better to go have the testing done and know instead of having it hang over your head like an incomplete homework assignment due in the morning.

Good luck. I'm rooting for you.

MarioLucarioFan64 : as ghostbear said you should get yourself checked out just to make sure you don,t have cancer so that if you do they will be able to find it, I lost my grandmother 16 years ago to leukemia and throughout her entire life she never went to a doctor had she went to get checked they might had been able to stop the cancer from spreading, I,m not saying that you have cancer but it would be a very good idea to get checked just to make sure that you don,t

Something you could look into doing for preventative measures is consuming a whole lot of antioxidants. Tea is high in antioxidants and so is cranberry juice; the latter of which is good for the kidneys. Something else I've also heard is that there's something really potent in broccoli sprouts that helps kill cancer. As everyone else has stated, early detection is VERY important. Don't let it turn you into a hypochondriac, but stay on top of it and try to talk your mom into having herself checked. If she doesn't have it, no harm done. But if she does and she chooses willful ignorance and denial, she's hurting herself.

Just because you are predispositioned to cancer does not mean you will have it. It is good that letter was sent to your family, but you cannot live in fear. You may have to be checked out earlier and maybe more frequently, but you cannot live in fear. Talk your mother into preventative care, tell her to get checked out,and to take care of herself. I do not want your mother to pass away from something that could be prevented or lessened. I know the doctor's visits and the specialist's visits will be expensive, but that is a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to cancer treatment costs and how it diminishes your quality of life.

I'm 24 and don't have cancer. My mother's family has a very serious breast cancer problem. Even some of the males got it. I might get breast cancer. But if I do, then life goes on. I mean, I'm fat and weak and mentally ill in some ways. Dying would be a relief! But even so, I want to stick around as long as possible to be here for my family and others while enjoying life. Hang in there, and enjoy life! Try to help your family do the same.

I'm a Biologist/weather forecaster. I can tell you genetics we still do not always understand. There are cancer genes that can be inherited but it may never cause any problems. Some people are just carriers and the genes never mutate into cancer. Others get the faulty genes and it does mutate.

I will give you an example. Lets say C is the regular gene. Lets say a little c is a cancer gene.

Lets so your parents your dad would be CC and lets say your mom is Cc here is what you would get  CC- Doesn't have cancer gene Cc- Carrier, Cc-carrier, cc- has the cancer gene.
So the probability would be 25% of not having the Gene, 50% of being a carrier and 25% have the faulty gene. Now the wildcard is mutations as genes can mutate over time due to an exposure of something in the environment or illness.

Now my condition is a recessive gene (skips several generations). Its speculated that I have a mild case of Cystic Fibrosis.

Now not only do I have a Science background. I am also a Christian. I learned years ago you can't worry about your genes. You will end up what if yourself to death. You will also create stress which is not good. I just trust my faith in God and find comfort in Jesus. That is what I have to do. Nobody knows ones body better than you. So just be on the alert for chances.

In my family I have lost a cousin to cancer, as well as an aunt. As well as some of my family who had it went into remission, as well as lot of my family have just skin cancer (which is easily removed).

My point is, cancer seems to run in my family, but I don't have it at 32 years old.

Oh dear....sorry to hear about that. This is extremely worrying I do hope you have been to the docs to at least check to see if you have cancer or not. Remember you have people on vizzed who understands a lot of things, and what you are going through you can see from the replies. I just hope you don't get cancer since you are still pretty much young, and have a lot to live for.

The only thing that can really be done is to live every day to the fullest extent. This goes for everyone, even if they aren't ill. You must live for today, and worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes if it can't be prevented.

I know it's probably scary to think you have some sort of ticking time bomb inside of you that'll just come by and ruin your life as well as take it from you, but the only thing to combat that is to live as well as possible.

Don't worry too much about it until it's a problem. Until then, you'll just have to enjoy life like usual.
