How often have you had to deal with someone who coughed in public while in your presence? Did you ever come across someone who sneezed in your vicinity while you were trying to reach a given destination? How about yawning without covering the mouth? Those things are disgusting.  One too many times I have become sick from people and their poor hygiene. It's annoying to see someone spit on the ground so often or come across someone with an awful scent. Ugh.

How often has this happened to you? How do you deal with it? Thanks for highlighting this problem.

There is hygiene and there is manners. Smelling bad at work is bad hygiene. Not covering your mouth with a sleeve is bad manners. I don't think I've ever gotten sick from someone else sneezing or coughing in my vicinity but I don't think it looks great.

I'm a runner so I spit when I run but I take care to do it nowhere near other people and usually deep into a lawn. It's hard, while sprinting or running 7 minute miles over and over, to swallow saliva. I just eject it.

Otherwise, I know people aren't on their best behavior when they're sick. I give them some leeway and I try not to judge when they're coughing or sneezing. I know they don't feel good so they get a pass.

I haven't encountered bad Hygiene but two times. But they were very bad.

The first one was when I was in Wal-Mart I guess its been about 2 years ago. This mother and her two children had classic flu symptoms. They were wrapped up in clothes and shivering, they were coughing, spitting up stuff, and had a snotty nose. As I was walking by one of the kids couched and spit up stuff on me. Now, I have a condition that causes me to get sick. So I was upset and aggravated. The thing that aggravated me the most was they did not cover their mouth, have Kleenexes or handkerchiefs to wipe their nose or cover their mouth. I was also upset that they would go to a busy place like that with the flu. Needless to say I went straight to the nearest bathroom washed my hands and when I got home I took a shower asap. Thankfully it didn't trigger my condition and I didn't get sick.

The second one occurred when I was in high school. I knew this guy that was a heavy drinker. He had drank a lot over the weekend. Come Monday he still had the alcohol smell on him and he smelled like he hadn't taken a bath. It was just bad. Me and my friends tried to avoid him. Also when he was lit he was very unpleasant to be around.  So there was the two reasons me and my friends avoided this person. I hate to say this but thankfully the second term of my Sophomore year he moved away after getting into trouble.

Well I feel sorry for those that are sick. But, it makes sense if you are sick stay at home, and not spread it. My immune system you see is very low so I can easily catch anything much to my disappointment. What I do is I make sure I am not sitting next to the person or being near them when I head cough, sneeze wheeze or anything else. I know I had 1 deadly flu in the past caught from that. And 1 other bad flu so that's why I don't go near the person who is very sick. As for hygiene in other areas its really good to make sure you take care of yourself on whatever you do. '-'

I've encountered it plenty of times and trust me it's no fun. A lot of the people in my school smell... really bad for some reason, and I just can't stand it. It's made me go out of my way to make myself smell good. Maybe that's why people approach me easily now, lol.

It is pretty common for people here to cough into their arms or something in order to prevent diseases and all that from being spread. That might be why I almost never get sick lol, besides my god-tier immune system.

It's actually pretty common for me to encounter people like that. I've come into contact with far too many people that had rancid smelling breath and just kept going on about their day as if they were completely oblivious of their own hygiene, or lack thereof. I just don't understand how some people aren't consciously aware of their own odors or bad breath. I had a guidance counselor throughout my 4 years of high school that had breath that smelled like a landfill, and it just so happened that my last name fell under the name range of students he was the counselor for. He fulfilled his job as a counselor well, but I would always leave his office baffled by how unmindful he was of his own breath and how close he stood next to people when he talked. It's possible that it could've been a symptom of a more serious health condition, but even then, I still think he could've done more to minimize the effects his breath had on others (ranging anywhere from scorched eyebrows/nose hairs to melted faces).

As ghostbear pointed out, there is a difference between a lack of proper hygiene, and a lack of manners. It should be common sense not to sneeze/cough in someone else's face, regardless of whether or not you are feeling 100%%. Bad hygiene that comes as a direct result of the sickness/condition you are in is another thing because it is out of your control and it really can't be helped, only minimized.

That is disgusting and in this day and age, there is really no excuse. That ranks higher than one of my personal pet peeves, wearing pajama pants and slippers in public. I mean,I might be lazy at times, but at least I put on a shirt and pants and shoes before I go outside.
