For your overall health, it's definitely push ups. I read the summary of a recent Spanish study that says that traditional sit ups are actually hurting your spine. I think it makes sense; even though I maintain good posture my lower back hurts after doing sit ups. Now, static hold like the plank or exercises like leg raise are still to be recommended because your back is still.

I prefer sit ups because that's what's the most effective for me. After I started going to the gym for a while, I got to the point where I could do about 12 to 15 push ups, but at the end of that, I would b tired, but that's all. By the time I'm done doing my sit ups, not only am I tired, but I can also feel the burn all over my stomach and everywhere else, so I will always pick sit ups over push ups any day.

I'm not bragging to say "I operate a fitness center," but it should give me a moderate amount of credibility.

The first question is: "What is your objective with only focusing on one of those two specific exercises?" What are you trying to achieve?

If you're going after a nice back, a nice arm, and a strong chest, push-ups. If you're going after a strong core, non-injury during running or walking, and nice abs, sit-ups.

If you're trying to lose weight or tone up, neither.

Ultimately, a mix of both is going to be the best way to go about this. And it shouldn't take much more than 10 minutes to go through an effective core work-out with sit-ups and planks thrown in. I don't know what time you're maximizing. You can do a solid push-up routine in about five minutes.

Take the fifteen minutes, do both of those, and skip the sugary desserts when you're done with dinner. That's the best of all three worlds.

I'm sure that push-ups are better for you especially if you can handle doing many of them at once. But I greatly prefer sit-ups since I can keep going with them easier than I can with push-ups. Plus I can't even do each push-up correctly most of the time

Neither is good to lose weight, just to get that out there. Like the fitness director said: That comes with a good diet and exercise routine.

Besides that, I
prefer push-ups, because it's easy and my body is conditioned for it. Plus, my arms feel much better afterwards. However, I'm trying to go for decent abs, so while I dislike them, sit-ups help a lot more for me. It sort of compresses my spine in a way I don't like, but I do feel it in my core. It all depends on what you're going for.

Oats : If you're aiming at decent abs, look up planking in the push-up position. That'll get you going. Planks are better than sit-ups for aesthetics and good-looking, defined abs.

I personally prefer push ups because they're easier to do for me, as my body is built better for them.
However, there is a specific flaw. My scoliosis kills me when I do either of them, but I do them anyways.

From any P.E teacher or otherwise knowledgeable on physical health, the answer I've gotten is push ups if you could just focus on one. That said none should replace the other since they exercise different parts of the body. Also neither is particularly good to lose weight, in that case you'd be better off just going jogging or running.

Personally, I've always found sit ups a lot easier. I'm not sure if it's because the exercise is easier or it's me simply having weak arms (likely the latter).

I say push ups for me because I have the most difficult time of trying to sit ups. Because I know I'm not that fully strong to push myself up for that exercise. So with push ups I can do a few which does make me happy it shows I can do that exercise. Sadly not everyday though. Since well I'm not built up on strength due to my health reasons, and I can easily get tired very, very quickly...

Why not both? I mean, it's a good thing and it will turn you into superhuman, especially if you...

DO 100 PUSH UPS
DO 100 SET UPS
DO 100 SQUATS
DO 10KM RUN EVERYDAY
TIL YOU LOSE YOUR HAIR

And of course, you will be able to one punch everything in your sight, so be careful not to "playfully punch" someone.

Joke aside, I would say depends on where you want to work on. As for myself, I would say set ups because, of course, my belly *slap my belly* It's like a jelly at this moment... Does anyone want a blood-flavor jelly?

Surprisingly, all the sit UPS that I have been doing lately helped me get much better at push UPS. In the past week I have done a set up sit UPS on 3 different days and after that I did push UPS and not only were I able to do more than when i tried at the start of the week, but quicker and easier too, so I guess now I'm a fan of both thanks to this lol.

I'd say go for an even combination of both. Overall I would imagine this would help strengthen more muscles in the body, making yourself healthier overall than focusing on a single exercise. I personally like doing both, along with some basic leg exercises to keep as much as possible in shape.

So much One Punch Man in this thread though..

To be honest I hate excersize but I'd sooner go with situps. My legs are stronger than my arms.

I would prefer to do push-ups because I enjoy it better than sit-ups and it doesn't make me want to think about getting a new back after I work it out. I find it more enduring and rewarding rather than painful.

Situps do nearly nothing for your body, they can help with getting abs, but they don't burn many calories or help many of your muscles.

I used to do 100 Situps a day suspended on a mat from a pretty nice angle, it felt like I was getting fit, but the science doesn't agree.

Since I more or less subscribe to the idea of all things in moderation, I tend to do both sit ups and push-ups, although I consider push-ups to be better for me since sit ups aren't as much of a challenge. However, I'm not exactly what one would call frail and I tend to play many random sports (so I'm always doing a variety of exercises beyond just sit ups and push-ups). No matter what exercises you're doing though, do remember to allow your muscles to rest (try not to overexert yourself). I tend to work on everything all at once, but I know of some people that would alternate between working on their arms and legs (e.g. arms on Mondays and Wednesdays and legs on Tuesdays and Thursdays). I suppose you could try doing something similar for the sit ups and push-ups and then see what works best for you. Good luck with getting fit and hope you find the training routine that's the most appropriate for you! ^^

Sit ups/crunches are pretty bad for your spine/back. Plus, overall, they don't do much.
Btw, Abs are not because you do a bunch of sit ups, you get abs when you're below a certain body fat percentage.

Push ups are a pretty solid exercise. If you can't do them, don't do "knee pushups", try doing push ups at an angle, it's easier that way. Knee pushups have practically no benefit.
I'm assuming you aren't going to go to a gym, so bodyweight is the way to go.

Besides push ups, squats are good (Just make sure you take care of them knees), and mountain climbers are good for glutes and stuff.

L - Sit, Planks and Dragon Flags are really good core (ab) exercises that don't hurt you.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
