Which do you like more: beating a game using glitches and shortcuts (like speedrunners do) or beating a game the way it was meant to be completed?

For me, I like beating a video game the intended way the first time I complete it, but if/when I try to beat it again, I like learning how to beat it faster and attempting many shortcuts and glitches I find doable.

PacmanandMariofan : I try to beat the game the normal way almost every time. Speedrunning isn't my thing so I only really go for glitches when I'm bored or for laughs.

I typically don't try to use glitches or shortcuts to beat a game, except for in Mario Kart games, then I like using shortcuts to get ahead of the everyone.

supersam4ever08: I often try to speedrun some of my favorite games, but I've noticed it isn't my thing either. I can do most of the glitches/shortcuts properly, but I usually make a ton of mistakes along the way.

gamerforlifeforever2 : I love using shortcuts in Mario Kart! Well, I have to so I can get the rank I want in each cup in the Grand Prix. I usually get a 2-star rank from drifting almost constantly and using every shortcut possible. Even after all that I still can't get 3 stars

PacmanandMariofan : It depends on the game and the glitch. For example, there are some Pokemon games with glitches that even if you use them, it doesn't make you unbeatable. I try not to use cheats or glitches if it makes the game too easy for me. 

I also user shortcuts in Mario Kart lol. They're meant to be used and meant so you can beat the heck out of your fellow racers . 

I don't get why people even want to use glitches and cheats and stuff. I mean, in some games it's fine because it makes the game more fun and gives you more stuff to do, like in the GTA games, but for the most part, you play games to have fun and to pass the time, so why would someone want to end the game sooner and miss a bunch of stuff? If I'm going to get a game, I'd rather use up my full play through for however many weeks it takes than be done with it in a few days and bored.

PacmanandMariofan : I like playing the games from start to finish like the way it was meant to be played. Sometimes I do prefer shortcuts/glitches, but only if I really beated it at least once. Btw, I think your reply to supersam failed. Lemme fix that for ya. Or was this just the result of a edited post?

I prefer to beat games the way they are intended to be played. I think this mostly has to do with my Asperger's Syndrome, but I'm not 100 percent sure. I do enjoy using glitches after I beat the game, though. For example, once I beat the champion in Pokemon Platinum, I'm going to try the void glitch and hopefully get to event only Pokemon by using this glitch.

Final Weapon : Yeah I agree, like zanderlex said, it's most likely not near as fun to end a game early on your first time playing it. Well, unless you can't figure out how to beat it the intended way or it's just too frustrating.

I definitely prefer beating games the way they were originally intended before looking up any cheats or cheat codes simply because beating games "the hard way" is really the only way to get the full story. While most games have cheat codes that are easily implemented, it's not something that I prefer to do as it tends take away too much from the difficulty. Some games have "little" cheats in them on purpose just to make the game beatable, others that allow saving allow the player to effectively "Time Travel" so if something was missed or you find yourself in a position where you want to "try that again" it's really easy to do.

As far as short-cuts are concerned, the Warp Whistle from Super Mario 3 jumps to mind. Although it does come in handy for skipping levels, it's usefulness is limited as the trade-off of making the game somewhat easier with the drawback of missing out on all the items and adventures from the skipped worlds really makes this a bad option if you want to see the whole game.

Glitches on the other hand can be fun when they add additional game play like Easter eggs. As I like to see as much of any title I play, I add them to my "to do list" before finishing up a game just so I can say I've seen it all.

For my speedruns of Metroid Zero Mission, it is pretty much mandatory for me to use shortcuts to get to places faster. But other than that I play games normally and glitch free.

I prefer to play things the normal way...At least the first time anyway. On my second run through games, I don't mind looking for and exploiting shortcuts.

David1217 : I don't like using the Super Mario Bros. 3 warp whistle unless I want to speedrun the game. It's the kind of game I really enjoy going for a 100% completion in since you can get so many extra lives easily.

Good question. I prefer to beat it the right way. What I mean is,no using god mode,no using weapons that you do not earn or start with,no boosts. But if I find an item in game that helps me blow past an enemy or if I can play through a section at a checkpoint and use what I learned,I will do that. BTW,I did have to use the Konami code to beat Contra. But when you consider everything was a damned death trap,that really was not cheating.

When I'm playing for fun, I just play the way that's intended, but when speedrunning, anything goes and glitches usually make it more fun and challenging (half the time, the glitches are harder to pull off than just playing normally).

I'm a traditional type guy. Whenever I play through a game, I like to play through WITHOUT any cheats/guides/etc. That's just the way I grew up gaming and the way I've always been.

The only time I MIGHT make exceptions is if I've already beaten a game, but I just can't get to 100% (which is rare) no matter what I've tried, (usually for months)

I might do a contest that requires a speed run or cheats, but those are usually only for specific challenges/events.

No I generally don't like using glitches and cheating aside from some particular games where I find that fun (like GTA 5) and even then I usually go through the game without using any cheats first. The same goes with using game guides, unless I'm completely stuck. Don't get the sense of accomplishment because it doesn't feel like I actually beat the game myself.

I was going to bring that one up, even though I've never beaten Contra, it's the same code for Lifeforce, which I was able to beat only with the cheat, the only trouble I had with that one was running out of lives before I could memorize the pattern.

Old school games were notorious for little to no mercy. But it helped make us into better gamers and people. Long live the Konami code.

I always beat games the way they're intended to be. An obvious exception is shortcuts in racing games, but as zander said, they just add a bit of fun to the game. Once I've beaten the game, I may go search for handicaps that make the game a bit more challenging so I can feel the thrill again.
