It's absolutely heavenly, especially when the potatoes are cooked perfectly, and not too hard.

My grandmother makes the best beef stew, and honestly, it is the biggest thing I miss about living back home. Since I'm in California, it's not as cold, so the opportunities to have it are less in nature, but my girlfriend still makes it for me upon request.

For those who believe in a higher power, beef stew is proof there are just and loving gods out there.

The mix of carrots, potatoes that fall apart in your mouth, thick, rich, warm broth, and beef, all covered with a dumpling top, is a little slice of heaven. 

I'm in a cold state in the U.S. ('murica!) and letting beef stew simmer in a crock pot for half a day to find that ultimate level of winter time food is the worst for trying my patience.

"When god hands you lemons, you make beef stew."  I like it, but not from the can.  I remember when there used to be actual meat in the can style, but now it is more like ground up who-knows-what, and it is nothing but mush.  I would dare even call it meat.  Home made slow cooked style is where it is at, with fresh carrots, potatoes, onion and celery.  Give or take a few more items.  Can throw some cabbage in there too, as well as many different herbs and spices.  Wonderful stuff you can do with it for sure, and it makes a cheap, tasty meal for multiple people.
