Back in primary school (grade 4 I believe) everyone played The soprano flute. It was an OK instrument, but considering I started puberty so early it was getting too small for my large hands. Plus The sounds was too high-pitch.

Then in Secondary 1 (Grade 7) everyone played The alto flute, a larger for of The soprano one. I should say MUCH larger since I hard a hard time reaching The bottom of The flute - The keys were too spaced-out to be comfortable. And I still found its sound unappealing.

Then in Secondary 2 and 3 I got to experience "real" instruments in a wind and brass orchestra - no percussion except a battery, and no strings except a bass. At first I wanted to play The flute (The sideways one) but I could barely make a sound. It is a shame; I would have LOVED to play The flute solo from Princess Ellis. I also tried The euphonium and The tuba, but they were in f key, and in primary school we were taught The G key, which was confusing. Anyway I settled from The trumpet, which in my view is The best instrument in The world.

I can not think of any other instrument which stands out so obviously in an orchestra. Without it, The Main Theme and The core of The Imperial March in Star Wars just would not sound The same. Even on The Super Nintendo The "trumpet" was obvious in games like Final Fantasy IV (The battle theme, The final battle theme).

Of course, The violin is also a very good instrument. After all, The intro to The Imperial March is heavy with them and FF IV has a lot of them. But I think it has been overused through The years. Just listen to classical music like Mozart or "older" Beethoven; it is almost exclusively strings (violins or harpsichord).

So, which instrument do you / have you / do you want to play?

I want to play the violin since that's probably my favorite instrument of them all thanks to my favorite composer. I just love the way it sounds if it's played the right way. I used to play the piano very lightly before but that was a very long time ago and I ended up never playing again. I did end up having a guitar class in high school which I wanted, but for some strange reason, that got deleted.

I always wanted to play the trumpet. I'm not sure what it is about it that makes me want to play it, but I really wanted to learn how to play it, and never got the chance.

gamerforlifeforever2 : Go for it if ever you have the chance! It is far more easy to play than the clarinet and the likes since you jsut need to vibrate your lips to produce a sound. For the clarinet, you must make a wooden piece vibrate to make a sound.

zanderlex : such classes usually get deleted first, for some reason. Teachers do not really care about students it would seem... But if you have the time larger cities usually boast many such classes.

I don't play any instruments yet but I'd like to learn how to play the acoustic guitar. My high school has a one-trimester-long acoustic guitar class that I'm going to be taking for the last few months of the school year. So I'll definitely be learning it.

zanderlex : Oh nice, you took a guitar class! Hopefully my guitar class won't get removed from my schedule like yours did. At least there's always junior and senior years after this.

PacmanandMariofan : Well, I didn't get to take it at all. Only the students who had the the entire year took it. I didn't even go to the class once since it was gone.

I very recently started learning how to play the guitar. I started teaching myself for about a month or so, but once I felt like I'd done everything I could do on my own, I started taking lessons on Saturday mornings. So far, I've learned strumming/double strumming and the E, E minor, and A, A minor chords. I'm also working on C and G since there will be many progressions between those two cords. I'd  really like to be able to play songs and perhaps even create some of my own eventually.

Once I master the guitar, I'd like to try my hand at piano or violin next. The thing with violin is that you can be doing everything correctly, but if your bow isn't adjusted correctly, it won't sound right.

After reading The comments, it now seems that I too want to play The guitar . It looks "relatively" easy to master and it seems to be The instrument of The free spirits for some reason.

My strongest instrument would probably be acoustic drums. I've owned a decent set since 2008 and have gotten good enough to the point of playing live frequently. Hand percussion is also another realm I'm familiar with. I'm also somewhat good at keyboard instruments, especially synthesizers. I've tried to learn playing the guitar on multiple occasions, but I really suck at rapidly changing my fingers' positions to make chords. Once I pull together some dollas, I'll be investing in a pair of Technics SL-1200 turntables so I can mix music better and experiment with turntablism techniques. I consider them to be instruments when used for that purpose.

Clayton 2 : Just curious, are turntables actually considered an instrument? No doubt that it creates music, however. Also, is playing the piano not requiring a lot of dexterity too?

janus : Certain varieties of turntables are resilient enough to withstand rapid and complicated manipulations of records. Combined with a mixer, this can lead to completely new sounds being made from preexisting ones. If there is enough skill, one can actually improvise and perform with other musicians' instruments. However, if you're just using a turntable for playing records and mixing, it's a piece of audio reproduction equipment.

Playing the piano does require better than average dexterity and precision, but there's a lot more space for my fingers to spread out on a keyboard than the fret board of a guitar. Overall, I just don't think it's my kind of instrument.

I have played the instruments that you mentioned when in school. I never really was a fan of the flutes though, so I ended up abandoning those altogether. I did enjoy violin, but gave that one up about a year after I got one. I'd say around my senior year, I began to play around with an acoustic guitar. I really didn't know much and would just kind of try and learn chords.

Now, I play the acoustic guitar and electric guitar, and I really enjoy it. I wanted to learn drums, but they're simply too loud for my house to handle. I am happy with the guitar though, it's nice being able to make music. It's kind of a stress reliever, after work you can just kick back and play some chords and stumble upon something great. Of course, there's also jam sessions which are probably humanities single best idea ever.

Also, in response to an earlier post, I think turn tables can actually be considered an instrument... technically. My brother would probably marry his turn tables if legal, and he swears it's just as hard to make great music as it is for a guitarist, drummer, etc. I did look at the software he uses to make it all work, and it does look complicated. I don't necessarily agree it's as hard as the guitar, though.

Final note: I have mad respect for people who can play the piano good. Piano is a beautiful and impressive instrument. I wanted to get started on the piano, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I played the piano when I was younger. I quit it 2 years ago though because I was just not motivated to do it anymore.
I do miss playing the piano but not enough so that I'll alter my schedule and do it again.

Electric guitar plus Marshall half-stack. The only way to jam. I stink. I used to be mediocre. But when it's loud enough it sounds so much better regardless. I mean window-shaking. Had to give it up though. One of my biggest regrets. Such a stress reliever.

I noticed this is an older thread, just thought I'd add a little bit here.
I'm in high school right now, and I play clarinet / tenor sax / piano and will be learning how to play brass instruments over the summer. I personally don't like the trumpet, it's too loud for me, unless you use a mute (either cone or plunger). I also despise flutes and oboes and the highest register on the clarinet because they sound absolutely atrocious up-close. The other brass instruments  are fine, they have a low sound, and it doesn't get as loud as often. Now drums, I hate unless they are on pads, the pads mute the sound a lot, to the point where it goes from an 8/10 to a 3/10. Something people don't realize is that it's very hard to play a woodwind, because you can push the air too hard and murder you're sound completely, which isn't possible (I'm pretty sure) on a brass instrument, and your reed determines where that drop off, like my reed (vandoren 3 for clarinet and vandoren 3 1/2 for tenor) has a cut off at 2nd octave Bb if I try to play FF on either instrument, very annoying when you're music calls for it, and next year, I will be joining Jazz band hopefully, which will need me to play those exact notes. Music is my life, if I'm not on games, I'm playing music or at school.
Thanks for reading my thoughts and have a great day.

In 3rd grade the music teacher made everyone play the recorder, it's kind of like a flute. It wasn't really hard to do or anything.

Then, in 6th Grade, I played the clarinet. I was ok at it, but I could never get the really high notes. After 6th Grade I decided not to be in Band anymore and have not played an instrument since.

macman3 : Posting in older threads is fine as long as the last post that was made in it isn't over 3 months old. Just thought I'd let you know.

janus :   I played the alto saxophone for three years.  Seventh, eighth and ninth grade.  It was fun in concert and marching band, but I wanted to learn the guitar, so I am still learning that to this day.  I don't get to play much since I work a lot, and when I am home, I sit at the computer most of the time.  I would really love to learn the piano and the violin some day.  I do have a keyboard, and I have dabbled a bit with it, but I have no idea what I am doing.

I've always wanted to learn how to play piano. As a stand alone instrument, I think it sounds better than anything else in the world. There are so many piano exclusive tracks that speak to my heart, ranging from inspirational and uplifting, to sad or even angry. It's possible to convey so much with a piano, and it's always been my favorite. I've just never had the money to learn how to play
