So, I'm sure a fair bit of us have tried a Monster energy drink at some point in our lives. I love the taste of Monster, but at the same time I always feel sick afterwards. Ironically, the cure to that sickness seems to be another Monster. I can't tell if it's a sugar crash, or a caffeine crash, or if there's something else that causes it.

It's just weird because I am always fully aware of how crappy I feel 3-4 hours later, but I end up drinking it anyways. I'm curious, does anyone else feel a bit sick afterwards?

Of course, if anyone knows why it does that, that would be cool to share.

I wrote this while drinking a monster. I have no regrets right now.

I've only tried Monster once, and considering it has twice the daily recommended amount of sugar, I will hardly try it again.

"Energy drinks" haven't been of my taste at any point of my life. Most of my friends like mixing them with Vodka during our nightlife, but I can't deal with such high amounts of sugar.

I did feel a bit sick after drinking not even half the bottle. I had a little headache hours later, but nothing to worry about too much, since the sun and the constant noise (I was at a racing event) could also be its origins.

I am not even allowed to drink Monsters because mom believes it will kill you. She only believes this by reading about kids with heart conditions and stuff dying from it. I did try one though when i was in regular school on my way home after a football game with my buddies

I don't like Monster at all, he's right it can kill you and its like three times worse than what Red Bull can do to you. Just having one in a day is really really bad. I never had it and I never will because of that, but I drink Red Bull if I have the funds and i really like Kickstart from Mountain Dew which is something that I suggest you try out, I think it tastes good and it can be really cheap in some places as well.

It's usually a case of a caffiene/sugar crash especially if you don't drink it often or drink it in large quantities thats all.. and after a few hours your body is like.. where has all the sugar/caffeine gone.. and the chemicals then balance out and you go on a low....

It's similar to how the body works when sleep deprived.

That's it really.

Exactly what sonicmcmuffin said, that's a huge reason I don't drink energy drinks, because while they'll give you energy for a little while, you'll eventually crash, and then you won't have any energy.

I used to drink Monster's like crazy.  They can give you a pretty intense rush and I never experience a "crash" from them.  I did drink so many they quit giving me a rush though.  Nowadays I'm much more moderate with my use of energy drinks.  I'll pick one up on the way to work every once in awhile for a boost to get goin but I usually get the JavaMonsters they are coffee flavored, starbucks has some good energy drinks too but they are usually a couple more bucks so I rarely get them.

Yeah, I stay away from energy drinks... I've never even had a Monster. My friend had told me that Monster tastes like agony. XD

I had a Vault energy soda once... Didn't seem to affect me at all. I wasn't anymore energetic as I am normally. So, I don't care for energy drinks. If I want to stay awake, I usually grab a glass of milk.

I drink Monster Energy and various other energy drinks (not redbull though because it's really overpriced :V). I think I have somewhat of an addiction, I say somewhat because I drink them somewhat often but never drink more than 2 large cans in a day.

I started it finding the flavour to be kind of meh but it has grown on me, and they're very useful for someone likes me who tends to procrastinate with assignments and projects and end up working on them the night before (cramming for a history test right now though not drinking anything this time around). I don't feel particularly sick or anything after drinking them though perhaps a bit tired, maybe because my body has grown used to them, but I'd expect it's just a sugar/caffeine crash like muffin said which you generally get after drinking any type of Energy Drink.

I don't like energy drinks at all. Even if they do a decent job of providing you quick energy, the recoil afterwards isn't worth it. If I really wanted an energy boost for the day, I would probably just stick with tea or something that doesn't have a huge risk or leaving you energy drained afterwards. Although I don't typically like to go off of what other people say without seeing it for myself, a lot of my friends and people I know say that energy drinks don't even taste all that great.

If that's the case (Again, I've never tried one myself) then I don't see the benefits of drinking one aside from a temporary energy boost that will eventually leave you exhausted. I might just have one in the future just to see what it tastes like, but never again.

Skilledtree : I cannot stand the taste of monster, and for red bull, I don't drink it because they put bovine semen in it, well, chemicals from it to produce taurine.

Q : Do energy Drinks have bull sperm in it?
A: Yes. Longhorn cattle company tested some of the top energy drinks drink brands (monster, red bull, etc) and found in fact they do contain bull sperm.
Read more at http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/bullsemen.asp#VD5J8lv1ADs5jxg7.99

Although I am a pretty frequent drinker of anything with electrolytes, I'm not sure that's considered an energy drink but I'm just throwing out speculations here.

To be, all energy drinks (except The "energy shots" without bubbles) taste The same, i.e. so sweet that it kills The purpose (The sugar crash cancels The caffeine / guarana). Besides caffeine does not seem to affect me; unlike my father I can drink it past noon and have a good night sleep.

A piece of advise: try going for a well-known brand rather than a cheaper generic. I once drank The latter and started having palpitations (nothing serious, thankfully).

It is both the sugar and caffeine crash that you feel afterwards. It is true, you should not drink this stuff excessively. I really only drink it before a workout.

A site to see what drink and how much of said drink can kill you.

A lot of interesting replies everyone!

EX Palen :
You know, I never actually knew that there was that much sugar. I drink excessive amounts of soda per day as is, so compounding the soda with the energy drink is probably like declaring war inside myself. I've never been one to mix energy drinks with anything though, Just never sounded like a good idea.

TristanTehGamer1 :
Well, I mean anything can kill you, but yeah. The media tends to exaggerate the effects of certain things. They need those all important ratings!

zanderlex :
My buddies drink Kick Start. I never really liked the taste of Mountain Dew, so I avoided ever trying them. Red Bull is expensive, and I honestly don't like the taste all that much.

sonicmcmuffin :
Makes sense to me. I honestly figured as such, but it's one of the things that I never really knew the answer to. It's sort of weird how some peoples bodies seem to be able to handle the ending better than others.

fightorace :
See, that's crazy to me. I guess after drinking so many, your body just kind of filters the effects. So either you drink even more, or you slow down to feel the effects again. I've never had the java monsters though, I'd probably get a coffee before I got anything that sounded coffee flavored and was also cold.

F. Starr :
I'm lactose Haha, but yeah that's probably a nice thing. I never tried Vault, I mainly stick with Monster. I wouldn't say it tastes like agony, honestly I think it tastes good. It's the after effect that is agony! I guess the best way to avoid an addiction, is to never start drinking them!

Zlinqx :
Red bull is stupidly overpriced for the serving size, I agree. I also don't like the taste of Red bull, which doesn't help my decision. Maybe your body has gotten used to whatever it is that causes the sickly after effect feeling. I totally get where you're coming from on why you drink it though.

Razor-987 :
I can definitely say that I have witnessed the recoil, and it sucks. If you're pulling an all nighter (double shift), sometimes it's one of the few options available, though.

Awegamer :
I feel violated just for reading that haha.

Oldschool777 :
That's actually interesting to know. Thanks for sharing the link, and your layout is awesome by the way.

Skilledtree : For Mountain Dew, its my favorite soda brand ever, but I got to the point where I don't even like the original flavor anymore because of all the other cool flavors they have so I stopped drinking the plain one. Maybe you should try one of the more unique flavors and see how you like them, like Baja Blast it Voltage, those are two of the very best flavors.

zanderlex :
Hm. I considered trying the "Gamer Fuel" ones I saw about a year ago, but never did. Do the variations actually taste different? I was just afraid that they were ever so slightly tuned flavors that were basically the same. I drink Pepsi almost exclusively, so stepping out of my comfort zone takes a lot haha!

Skilledtree : They taste completely different, if I had to compare, I would say that going from regular mountain dew to Voltage would be like taking Sprite and mixing it with grape soda.

zanderlex :

Wow that's crazy. I might give one of the alternates a try. Like I said, I just thought the difference was so minor that it was borderline unnoticeable.

I think the link is cool. I know those Monsters are strong, but I did not know 4-5 cans was my safe limit.

Thanks for the layout compliment. The Second Amendment is a precious thing.

Oldschool777 : FOUR TO FIVE?! It is over 2 liters of caffeinated drink! Right, did you not say you were a "big guy"? I guess that must increase your tolerance.

Anyway, a general piece of advice: be EXTREMELY careful when mixing energy drinks with alcohol. While you may not feel drunk - the excitement effect of caffeine cancels out the depressing effect (as in lowering the reaction time of your nervous system) of alcohol - but the alcohol still accumulates in your blood stream.
