For a little while, my computer has been overheating quite frequently, like I can't even be on it for a half-hour without it overheating and all I'm doing is being on Vizzed and iTunes. I am not sure on what is causing it.

I am planning to get a laptop late next month (mostly because they will have laptops on sale because the whole Back to School stuff). I am trying to have my current computer last until I get my laptop and I am wondering what I can do to keep my computer going.

Ok, I had my computer since Christmas 2008, used it since then, and I have beaten the whole computer up the entire 6 1/2 - 7 years, now it is having signs of giving up. So, I know it's old and worn out, but still, I want it to last until I get my laptop.

I have a Acer Aspire desktop computer.

Do you have a laptop cooler Igor? Also another that my cause it is a lot of files on your hard rive if you delete a lot then it tends to not overheat so much. But whereas I heard if it overheats badly it may be time to buy a brand new laptop. I pretty much have mine as the same. It does overheat but not as much as it used to be.

Eniitan : Well, I had to delete some of the files I never used since 2009-2011 that didn't come with the computer, and my brother has downloaded a lot of pirated stuff, my brother has this piracy addiction, not sure why . But my brother moved out and got his own place.

Anyways, I deleted all the files he downloaded, I deleted all the files I never use anymore, any stuff I want to keep (that didn't come with the computer) I put on a flash drive, and I run an antivirus program to clear any viruses/malware I had (used AVG antivirus).

So far, it has improved, maybe the culprit behind my computer overheating is my brother and didn't realize until now .

While it was not overheating, my laptop use to be excessively slow and the task manager showed that the processor was nearly 100 percent in use. If you are indeed just doing light browsing and listening to music, my guess is you have the same problem as I did: a computer infection. Save all your data and restore your computer to factory settings or the one just before that which merely wipes out all the programs without erasing your files.

A good way to extend the life of this computer would be to back up your important files and re-install windows. This would help you keep the load down on it. That's always a good thing to do every so often anyways just to make sure that you can keep things as fast as possible.

A suggestion would be to go into the task manager and see what has your computer loading all the time. Also, have you checked the fans on the unit to make sure they are clear of dust and debris?

Jordanv78 : Well, it's fixed now, my brother had so much pirated material downloaded onto my computer, it affected it's performance. I had to uninstall and delete each and every file he downloaded which freed a bunch of space and I have run AVG antivirus to clear all of the viruses and malware that my computer had with all those pirated downloads and it has been running smoothly since (for now), at least a month till I get a new laptop.

I have also put a bit of material on a flash drive (my stuff only).

Although the fan in my hard drive still makes a loud sound and it stops and goes, but that's mostly the wear that my computer has because I had it since 2008.

Well, your hard drive doesn't have its own fan...there are possibly fans located somewhere near them.

Its always a good practice to clean your fans out every once in a while as well.
If you open up your case, use some compressed air to blow out all the dust that accumulated in there.

You can always monitor your temps with speedfan to see that all is going well.

Ok, I had a person from Geek Squad (those electronic repairing people from Best Buy) to take a look at my computer and the guy said that the CPU processor is damaged, mostly caused due to overheating due to excess about of data being stored. He told me I can buy a new CPU, but since I'm planning on getting a new laptop next month, I didn't want to waste money for a new CPU just to use for a month.

So, the biggest reason is because my brother downloading a bunch of pirated stuff, it caused my CPU to overheat and got damaged which in turn cause my computer to frequently shut down.

So, it's a damaged CPU is causing my computer to shut down frequently. I got to live with it till I get my laptop next month.

Here something that you should consider after you get your next laptop. Consider getting yourself a separate lap fan to place the laptop on when using it. Your new laptop will have a fan, but if you are going to be using it at home, it would make things better to have a separate fan to make sure that your computer stays cool. You also want to be aware of how you use your laptop as well. My biggest mistake back in the day would be to always use my laptop on my bed and place it on top of the bed, so that it blocks the fan and overheats it easily. Once it starts to overheat, it affected my fan and it malfunctioned. So your usage of the fan should be considered as well.
