I was reading the newspaper on my way to work today and saw something quite interesting that's happening here in New York. Apparently, really soon the city council is going to make a decision on whether to ban all public helicopters from flying around the city. That would include all regular public helicopters as well as tourist ones and only Emergency and News helicopters will be permitted to fly, and this is all because of noise complaints.

What do you think? Is this really necessary? Putting maybe a dozen companies out of business that make millions.

More than 80% of all noise complaints were actually directed at emergency helicopters as well.

I doubt it will do much other than put those companies out of business.

I live next to one of the busiest intersections in the city. A lot of loud vehicles come by and since I'm somewhat close to the airport I can often hear planes flying by. Often times the noise ticks me off. But what am I to do? I could complain to the city, but that would result in the same problem you'd have down in NYC. People would just wind up avoiding the intersection due to the rigid rules and the many shops and restaurants nearby would suffer big time. With non-emergency helicopters many would belong to tourism companies and that would remove one item from the list of things you can no longer do in the Big Apple. For a city so important and so heavily frequented, such a law would put a hole in the economy.

And of course, the noise problem will likely continue anyways.

In my opinion that's pretty crazy. All means of transportation are important, and if they are going to ban public helicopters from flying around the city then it could impact their routes. I'm pretty sure pilots already have a hard time with their job and going on the routes to their destination.

Also, like Boxia said the noise will still be a problem since emergency and news helicopters have to be able to fly around the city still.

I think this is stupid. I mean, New York is a tourist destination. Flying around in a helicopter is one of the main things.

I bet you there is something more going on behind the scenes than noise complaints. If they really want to regulate it or whatever their goal is with this, then just set up a time frame that people can fly. For example, my apartment's quite hours are from 10 PM to 7 AM. Do something like that, where people can't fly during those hours.

Boxia : Not to mention that people are complaining about noises a thousand feet up, while at the same time you have the seaport, some of the most crowded streets in the world, and many more loud things.

Excuse the language, but that's pretty freakin' stupid. Like Boxia said, it would do no good but to just put their businesses out of business. If they need to advertise, they need to advertise.

NY is a tourist spot. Tourists with a private helicopter could go out and sightsee in the sky. If the city did this, they would have to get a rental car.

Sorry if I rambled a bit, but that's my two cents.

GamingN00B : it's not really tourists with a Pilots license, if they had that they would probably have their own helicopters, the helicopters have actuall staff pilots, dozens of them.

Lawmakers generally aren't too concerned with businesses that aren't lining their pockets. Might have something to do with it. Campaign contributors work in tall buildings? I don't know. Just a thought.

Well obviously when it's mostly emergency helicopters making the noise there really is no point in forbidding it. When what you're doing is just mostly putting them out of buisness. What's the point if most of the noise is still going to continue >.>

Besides flying around in a helicopter in New York makes sense since it's a big tourist destination so it's kind sad that you can't do it anymore.

Let's ban babies because they make noise, and 100% of noise complaints about babies are due to babies, so yeah let's ban them!

Yeah I really see no point in this. Basically your putting a ton of people out of business. I don't understand why they would ban certain helicopters and not all because it's still going to make noisy which makes no sense.

Cradily is love : But they will just keep making noises. What are we gonna do with them we ban them? Just like where are all the helicopters going to go when we bad them. I've said this was stupid before, and I stand by what I said. This is just people complaining about something to complain about.

I really don't understand why this is such a problem. I mean, isn't New York already noisy enough when not taking helicopters into consideration? I wouldn't know because I don't live there, that's why I'm asking. Also there will still be emergency helicopters so there's still going to be noise from helicopters anyway.

If you don't like the noise maybe you shouldn't have chose to live in the second loudest city in the world. Even if you work in NYC you can live on Long Island and take the train to and from work and bam! Provlem solved! Don't force companies to go out of business and people to lose their jobs because you didn't know the second loudest city in the world would be loud.
