I heard that mint toothpaste is bad for you.

I am wondering why and what I can use instead?

I have tried salt on my gums but am trying to cut down on my sodium intake.

What about dipping my brush in baking soda?

Or is there any proprietary brands I can buy?

I guess that the main danger lies in the kind of toothpaste (brighter gel or duller paste) rather than the flavor itself. By barring mint you are disqualifying like 90 percent of toothpastes .

I personally use one with a high fluoride content, as recommended by my dentist, in order to better-preserve my gums. If you don't have access to it you can also use over-the-counter mouth washes that contain fluoride.

I use Crest whitening toothpaste, and it is mint flavor. I haven't heard that mint flavoring is bad for you, and I'm sure that many dentists haven't heard it either if if is true lol.

Baking soda works, it it really isn't the best thing to do.

I just use regular mint toothpaste, I've never really been specific on what brand or flavour it should be, but what I've been using so far seems to have been good enough. I've never heard anything about mint toothpaste being bad for you, it would seem more likely if it was referring to a specific brand.

I use Crest regular mint toothpaste, the light blue kind. If I use any of the advanced whitening toothpastes my gums and the inside of my cheeks start peeling so I have to stop using it. I'll most likely be sticking with regular Crest toothpaste for most of my life then.

PacmanandMariofan : I never tried whitening toothpastes for an extended period of time because my dentist recommended AGAINST it. They usually contain peroxide or other strong agents that might mess with your mouth. The stripes looks less harmful as they are only applied on the teeth rather than the gums too

I typically use a natural baking soda based toothpaste. I have never had any issues with cavities or tooth damage, so it works for me.

I know a lot of dentists recommend using toothpaste with fluoride as it helps harden the enamel of your teeth, but high exposure to fluoride can poison a person. I am just worried they don't understand the long term effects it has on some people. It is added to tap water in very low concentrations as well. It is a controversial topic.

Ultimatone : I once asked an organic chem professor about the dangers of fluoride. While swallowing your tooth paste can be harmful, don't worry about it. You would need to drink an Olympic-size pool of fluoridated water to MAYBE reach a critical level in your body

Well I use any kind of toothpaste really. Whatever brand is fine with me. I didn't know it was bad for you and honestly I doubt it is. You can use baking soda for your teeth ... it is said that over time it makes your teeth whiter. Once you use it even once you can tell somewhat of a difference from when you used it the first time. I guess I really don't think about these kinds of things. I just want to make sure my hygiene stays tip top and everything and I'm good

I kind of don't really have a favorite Kind of toothpaste. Really I just wind up buying what's on sale when I need Toothpaste. Although I always wind up purchasing a NAME BRAND. I prefer the minty flavored ones over the cinnamon types.

I normally use whatever is the cheapest when I'm at the store, but usually it happens to be Colgate, that one seems to work the best for me, and I don't really care too much for those flavored kinds. I tried one of those once and it didn't really work out too well.

I've never been brand-loyal to a toothpaste. I usually try to get something that says 'whitening' on it that's not too expensive to help counteract all my years of excessive coffee drinking. Not going to pay 10 dollars for a tube of Pearl Drops or anything though.

Azul Fria : I d not find these to be effective. When I used it my teeth were still sensitive to cold. But if you must, try finding less expensive generic brands with the active ingredient (potassium chloride?)

I tried baking soda once, it's not my thing.

I prefer the baking soda being mixed in as an ingredient. I normally like to use Crest branded toothpaste along with the mouth wash. Whenever I run out of some I would sometimes by Colgate as an replacement. I don't like to buy cheep toothpaste cause than I'd feel I'm not cleaning my teeth the way I should.
