So, with my dying my hair, and my work being OK with it, I was happy about that. Now, I want to get my ears pierced, but in different places than last time. However, I can't... because of my job.

Women are allowed to have ear piercing visible, but men can not have them at all.
Women are also allowed to have long hair. Men have to either keep their hair an inch shorter ( I believe is that the general standard is ) , or not touch the collar of their shirt, like my job is.

Now, I'm allowed to wear my 2 rings when I want because they don't really conflict with my uniform that much, and they aren't fancy or flamboyant or anything like that. But, at the same time... doesn't what I said above make employers sexist when it comes to the way each gender is allowed to appeared? And if so, isn't this illegal, discriminating based off of the individuals gender?

I don't think it's considered sexist. Some places just have certain standards and in my case health regulations. We aren't aloud to have long nails or anything. No piercing except girls can have post earrings. That's a health regulation though. Some places just have certain standards for their employee's ... it may be sexist to some people but to me it's just not.

In a way, some jobs are a little bias about a person's appearance, this got me thinking, I think if it comes to anything (except clothing) I think both males and females needs to follow the same rules, like if males are not allowed to have ear rings, then females aren't allowed to have ear rings. If males are not allowed to have long hair, then females are not allowed to have long hair. I think it is fair to do it that way.

From what my Mom has told me, the standards are more of a Professionalism thing. It's (apparently) not very professional of men to wear earrings, but it fits on a woman more because that's normally what they are supposed to wear.

Not sure why it's like that, but it's like that. So, yeah.

It may be a business move more than anything else.  If you dress/act/etc. a certain way, certain people may judge you inappropriately, and they may decide to refuse services because of subconscious beliefs they formed about the business because of how they perceived you.  Your boss may require certain things of you because they care about the company and the people in it.  It likely isn't sexist...it's more likely an important business move.

But how can I say for sure?  I don't know your boss, nor can I judge them very well.

Like several other people have already said, it's all about what the company or your boss views as professional and what other people consider professional. Where I work, nobody's allowed to wear jeans. I don't like the rule, but I follow it because it's required and I don't want to get in trouble or possibly get fired.

There are a two sides to it.

First, it a perfect world, everyone could where what they want and it wouldn't matter if you are a girl or a boy. That's great, yes.

But, the a business is about making money, otherwise they would not stay in business. So they are concerned with the GENERAL view of professionalism; and that is that certain things are considered professional, and certain things aren't. It's part of culture really, what we wear has been a big part of what we represent (thus the idea of a work uniform). It has it's bad and good points.

It's surely a double standard, but is it sexist? In my view sexism means that certain tasks are only assigned to a certain sex with little to no flexibility.

TO continue with what Light Knight says, business is indeed about appearances. "Good looking" men usually have short hair and are shaved. To be honest, I think I would be a little uneasy being served a meal by Santa Claus; who knows what lies in that beard...

I'm not sure about Sexism per se, but there is a lot of Biaseds towards certain groups of people when applying for jobs. For example, there are certain jobs you won't even be considered for if you have crazy hair and tattoos all over your neck and in visible areas. Or if you have extreme piercings, etc.

But it goes for all sorts of things, like maybe you wont get a job because the person interviewing thought you had bad teeth, or you smelled weird.

I just had something like that happen like yesterday and today
On Monday, I got my 2 piercings on each ear on the upper cartilage, then on Wednesday my manager said i couldnt wear them at work because of blah blah <insert something sexist here>. (I stopped listening since i got pissed off)
Then today (Thursday) I went to Human Resources and told them that my piercings follow within the rules of appearance, to which they agree'd.
damn, the look on my managers face was priceless when HR and I told him its ok to have my earrings
even some of my co-workers were proud of me for doing that. although my manager ignored me for most of my shift ahahah

*Note* Not sure if all this makes sense due to me being kinda out of it right now :p

I doubt it's being sexist at all, It's probably just the standard of uniform and appearance they expect you to have. I mean they could have had their ears pierced before they began working there so it's not like there's much the employer can complain about.. Regardless it's not really worth losing a job over to get your ears pierced.

I mean look on the bright side. At least you have a sustainable job that doesn't seem that difficult. Could be a lot worse.. In the end you've got a lot more to lose than you have to win
