earthwarrior : Well they haven't confirmed it yet but I'm assuming they did use command blocks but I don't know for sure. Either way, they did put a lot of time into their submission and do deserve recognition for it.

I mean, if you were watching them work on it, you would feel so bad that they can't get the cash prize, or even the idea of DQ. 
I mean... No offense again, but it was probably the most worked-on submission. 
They didn't pour hours on it. it was DAYS on minecraft nonstop. 

Mrfe made himself sleep-deprived and nearly got fired from his job for automatically micro-sleeping. 
EM risked his grades on his finals and if he were to fail, he fails the class. 

I'd go on a limb and say screw the fact they're admins and using command blocks, give them the prize straight up.

Snowdeath : Not trying to be rude to them but, if you could get fired from your job and if you can fail your classes, then why would you spend these days non-stop working on a minecraft competition? It would seem pretty silly to put all of this at risk to possibly win $50 each from a competition?

I just don't understand all of that.

Snowdeath : They knew how much time they had since the beginning of the month and still chose to spend days on their work. If they really wanted to compete while spending a reasonable amount of time on this they should've made something smaller like the rest of us did.

Are you really saying $50 is more important than that? I mean really, putting a contest for $50 each over a real job and grades? mrfe would've made more than $50 if he was working instead of building AND risked making enough money for his computer. EM risked hundreds or thousands on his tuition costs for $50. I can't say I feel bad for them since the still chose to compete. Honestly, I can't believe mrfe's parents didn't do something if they noticed he was deprived of sleep. (assuming he lives with them)

You guys might not agree with me, but I think it was silly for them to go to those lengths to win a contest. I'm only hurt that I didn't think someone would put minecraft over their real life.

I'm sure the $50 each isn't why they were competing but I could be wrong. Let's just assume they invested 20 hours each, that's only around $2 an hour and they most likely make way more than that per an hour. I really think they invested the time because of their love for minecraft and because they wanted to simply win the competition. If they did do it for the money though then maybe I can work something out with them. I did tell mrfe weeks ago though that if his build contains command blocks, it wouldn't be eligible so they were aware of this.

Whether they get paid or not, I think we can all agree that they deserve 1st place based on the amount of time they invested into this. I'll be more clear on the rules next time and I'll definitely be giving all users an equal shot at winning.

Davideo7 : it's just the fact that you are outing your future at risk doing this competition. Even tho it was for the love of minecraft, the fact that Mrfe almost lost his job just shows that you can't spend your entire time doing this kind of thing. I respect their decision, I just don't agree.

Why is this an argument.

EM and mrfe both did great work.

I voted, and they clearly had the best submission.

They are DQ'd for the purposes of a cash prize, but David has spoken.

They deserve the recognition of first place.

But because they deserve first, the cash that would go to first is void, with second's prize going to David, third going to Van. Fourth and Fifth going to the respective users.

Regardless of whether it was right or wrong of them to put so much effort into this build, it's over and done with. They have been recognized, and I'm sure they've learned something about balancing time better as a result of their efforts.

No one is dead. No one is fired. No one is adversely affected by this.

Let people live life the way THEY choose. David isn't here to babysit every little person. He has his own family to look over. When you do things, you YOURSELF have to take responsibility. IF mrfe had lost his job, and IF EM's grades slipped, they would have to deal with the consequences of THEIR actions.

It's not up to a bunch of internet comment makers to determine whether they were right or wrong. Who are we to try to project a moral high ground on them, when we may not be right ourselves?

tl;dr - Drop it. It's a f***ing stupid argument. EM and mrfe are good kids, and I'm sure this was a learning experience one way or the other.

Also, I do want to point out that I wouldn't have lost my job unless I had literally fallen asleep at the register (which I technically almost did, but I didn't, so that argument is kinda null and void). Did we invest a TON into this build? Yes. Did it end up taking longer and causing more irl stress and sleep deprivation than I expected? Definitely. Do I regret taking the time to build our entry? Not at all. David wasn't wrong when he said that a big motivation for us was simply due to the fact that we want to positively invest into the server (and, to prove that, we want to continue to build on that dreamcast entry even though the competition is over and make it more interactive and neat to explore).

We definitely risked important things for the build, and (as leggy said) learned from it. I won't say we couldn't have started earlier, but both EM and I do have busy lives outside of Vizzed, so the work we could do before the end of the month was relatively minimal. I know that I, for one, worked more on my irl stuff before the end of the month so I could take the time to build this dreamcast. I had a couple last minute issues pop up, though, which is why I ended up having to cram so much into the 46+ hours I went without sleep (I worked 15 of those, and most of the rest of it was spent on the dreamcast).

Regarding command blocks (which the build DOES use, to be clear), I think EM and I both had a really great vision for where the build could go. It started as most of our builds do, as a neat idea that might place us well. Once we started building, we started seeing more of what it could become, and it just started flowing (hence the addition of command blocks). We started command blocks after I was already fairly tired, so I'll claim a dead brain for why I can't recall the conversation between David and I, lol.

As for the cash prize, I can guarantee that neither EM or I would give up our jobs/school for this build. I definitely underestimated myself, but (again) it wasn't fatal (none of my co-workers even mentioned it, to my memory).

If cash was the only reason, we'd be fools. I think this goes to show that we're not only motivated to participate in competitions (even if we do end up DQing ourselves), but we're also very invested in the server. It was a hope that our build would not only be great, but would inspire others to contribute great builds as well. And, it'll have many practical uses in the months to come.

I apologize for how long this post is, but there's been quite the silly debate going on. Hopefully this puts an end to it. Heck, I'll even go ahead and say that one of our builds for next month will probably have command blocks, just because we're more dedicated to building awesome builds than we are the cash (though cash is never bad).

tl;dr - read leggy's post. We're building great things for the server, the cash is a bonus. We overstressed ourselves this month (by way too much lol), but that's our fault.

(also, cuz I want to make a point of this, we used VERY little worldedit, at least compared to what we could have done. We created the walls with worldedit, and the floor (because those were simply aesthetic and to create boundaries), but I think everything else besides perhaps the tabletops were created by hand. The main portions of the build were certainly created by hand.)

mrfe : On the Minecraft server I made sure to mention that your SEGA submission wouldn't count if it used command blocks. You were pretty secretive on what you were making so I had no idea if it used command blocks or not which is why I made sure to tell you that. Also, you had told me it wasn't going to. Your direct quota:

I think this argument can now be concluded. As legacyme3 said, no one was killed or fired from this incident and no permanent damage was done so I think we can all move on past this point.

The next competition as I said will have more clear rules and I'll be doing things to give everyone the same equal opportunity. That next competition will be a season competition and will begin sometime this month.

Davideo7 : Yeah, I remember that. As I said in my post, though, we started building and decided to go with something much better than the original intention.

Live and learn, and we've got a great build from it, so it's not a big deal.
