Reasons not to vote?

Why wont you be exorcising your right to suffrage?

The universal franchise is a right bestowed upon the people?

Yet many people are apathetic.

What reasons do you have for not voting?

I usually never vote for Judges or mayor because I don't ever follow those races, so voting for one of those candidates without knowing anything about them would be very foolish in my opinion. However, I always vote for president and certain issues.

If I dislike all the people up for election I can't just vote for one for the sake of voting.  I would then be voting for someone I know I do not want in.  You vote for who you want in so if I don't like anyone up for election I chose not to vote.  If there is issues on the ballet to vote for I will put my thought on the topic but you can not force me to vote for people who I think are bad for leadership.  Sadly I have felt any of our current representatives in our government have been poor choices they all seem to follow the same path and not bring anything new to the table.  I'll stop there on my rant but that is how I feel.

If voting changed anything, it would have been made illegal a long time ago.

Seriously, voting in a uninominal system such as is the case in the U.S. and the parliamentary system - winner takes all - are such an impediment to voting as races
very rarely are determine with fractions of votes. In a proportional system however, every vote
does count and influences how governments are formed. It (usually) means that government will be smaller unless the alliance is with a socialist party as is happening in Greece.

In addition, not voting simply means you don't trust others to carry your voice. When you think about it, the great ideas of society (free trade, "progressivism") first started among intellectuals and then were carried by politicians. That's why I don't bother with voting anymore and instead focus on propagating my ideas in order to - I hope - influence the debate in some way.

What amazes me is how much pressure there is to vote. It's as if if you don't vote, you are a terrible citizen. Maybe you don't vote because you don't want to support ANY of the parties. Some people are fine with choosing the lesser of two evils, some people don't want to, leave them be.

There is actually talk in some places of adding a "none of the above" to the voting ballet; I bet you you'd see more people voting then.

I don't like voting, but I have to for *the greater good* what displeases me nowadays is how politics have changed things in many way and not for the greater good. There are some still ok to vote. Whereas overall it isn't. Because of the impact it has on the people. :/

Light Knight : Here, here. South Park parodied it well with the election between the douche bag and the terd sandwich...

Also, voting for the lesser of two evils, unless one of them is TRULY evil (like the Parti Québécois), is still voting for evil. I've been a political orphan for so long when I realized that most politicians are in this game for their self-interest rather than their constituencies'.

Finally, I thought the 'none of the above" option was standard in countries where voting is compulsory?

I can't name a politician I know for sure who was a decent human being. Maybe two or three. But maybe I just don't know enough about them. But that's why I hardly care.

I see 2 reasons: 1st is that both presidents are incompetent and it's a lose lose so you'd be picking your poison, the 2nd is that you're a lazy bum.

My reason for not voting is that I'm not old enough. But once I turn 16 I can vote in provincial elections so yay.

What always cracks me up is that the people that don't vote are usually the ones that complain about the government. You have a vote for a reason (if you are old enough) USE YOUR RIGHT TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD and get out and VOTE! INFORM YOURSELF! It's so easy to research candidates and ballot measures these days with the internet at everyone's fingertips. There really is not reason NOT TO.

Jordanv78 : What is the reason people don't vote is because they don't like any of the people running for office? They complain because they know no matter who gets elected, it is going to be bad.

Jordanv78 : Thing's right for the most part. If I feel like none of the candidates are qualified for the position they are running for, I won't vote for that particular part of the government, aka not voting for the insane amount of republicans running for president. I will admit that there are certain things I don't vote for at all such as judges, but I always vote on local and state issues as well as President, Senator, and Governor. I feel like I do my part as a citizen of the United States by voting on issues I care about.

Jordanv78 : I disagree. Not voting simply means you do not give your voice to someone else; it does not mean to renounce talking. Most elections are about political parties with very eclectic ideas, many of which one may disagree with. I became a political orphan around 2007 or so, when the provincial party I was supporting ended up being just like all the others.

I would rather speak for my self using blogs/forums since THIS has a larger influence on ordinary people.

gamerforlifeforever2 : The only problem is, the central issues in most elections hardly have to do with the most pressing problems. In 2008, in the middle of a huge economic crises, the two main choices were between more and even more government intervention. NONE actually proposed to do away with the problem of bubbles, i.e. regulations and the Federal Reserve.

gamerforlifeforever2 :

I understand where you are coming from, but I feel that most people whom do not vote do so because they are ill-informed on the possible candidates.

That being said, that still does not explain on why people wouldn't vote for specific ballot measures in areas that directly affect the area in which people live.

I do not identify with specific political parties and honestly I don't like a lot of people running for president a lot of the time, but what I do is inform myself and vote for the person that I most closely identify, which a lot of times is hard. I get it. Still though it's hard to complain about the way things are if people do not make an effort to change them. Sitting back and doing nothing is not a way to elicit change.

Besides not being of age to vote, I would find it hard to vote if I have the same mindset right now.
First off, i'm not too big on politics to really have a good vote. Because of this, my vote would probably be ignorant and uneducated on either parties.

Thing is, when something big happens like a national vote or something, one vote becomes less and less useful. The more people voting, the lower the importance of one vote becomes.
I'm not saying everyone should adapt that mindset and no one vote, but that's why I don't vote/won't vote much.

Jordanv78 : Considering how much information one would need to "be informed", it is no surprise most voters do not - rational ignorance they call it in economics.

And it is not true that people "sit back and do nothing". In the 19th century participation rates were below 50 percent (and remember that there was no universal suffrage), but innovation was plenty. Politics is just one way humans found to solve their problems - and most of the time it creates more problems than it solves.

maguc : I am glad you at least recognize your "ignorance." Too many Youtube videos showed how utterly ignorant some voters are; they do not even know the 3 branches of government!!
