My parents' musical tastes are as different as their height difference - my father is 30 cm taller.

His musical taste has been evolving through the years. Judging by his CDs, he loved progressive rock in the 1970s but also rock of the time. It carried to the 1980s where he played his Genesis and Supertram vinyls. I appreciated those groups; they remind me of when my parents would open the windows during sunny winter days to freshen up the house a little.
I'm not too sure what he liked in the 1990s, but in the 2000s we had share a lot of common tastes. We both liked Linkin Park (although he like Meteora more than I did) and he even bought Evanescence's first album - he dubbed their style "Linkin Park with a female voice." I left the house in 2007 so I haven't been up-to-date with his musical tastes.

My mother's taste, on the other hand, seem to have remained quite the same through the years. After her Elvis period (she had quite a few of his vinyls), he most apparent taste were for soft rock (Rock Matante, as we say jokingly in Quebec) for which I never cared. The rockiest music she likes is U2... but also Guns and Roses?! I was stunned to learn that she attended one of their concert; "It's from the 1980s, after all", she told me. Indeed, but that's not what you usually listen to!

So, do you share similar musical taste with your parents or is there an irreparable generational gap separating you?

The only parent I share a musical taste with is my dad. He likes the Hard Rock type of music, and so do I. However, he doesn't like dubstep, but I do. However, my step-sister like dubstep too. My mom is a pop person, and my step-mom is a country person. I despise country though. I cannot stand it.

In some ways, I share some musical tastes with my mother. I do not and never will care for Stevie Nicks, though. Mom LOVES her, and has since before I was born. I just never have cared for her sound.

We both like the Carpenters, we both like Cyndi Lauper, we both like the Eagles, Bryan Adams, Bob Seger,  Aerosmith, Pink Floyd (no clue how or when Mom EVER got into that), P!NK, Simon and Garfunkel,  Alabama, Europe, Toto, and surprisingly, we both like FUN. Which is an odd one because FUN is as far from the stuff Mom normally listens to as the mesosphere is from the bottom of the Marianas Trench.  We both still like N*Sync, too, which is an oddity nowadays.

We both like some Christian groups, like Casting Crowns, Third Day, Newsboys, Newsong, TobyMAC, Audio Adrenaline, Barlow Girl, and Avalon. We also both like classical and musical soundtracks (me moreso than Mom, however, at least on the musicals/ show tunes) but after that our tastes change.

I like OneRepublic, Imagine Dragons, and Owl City, for example, but the only one of those that Mom can even REMOTELY stand is Owl City. She also doesn't see why I like Infected Mushroom, Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, Cascada, Italobrothers, Nickel Creek, Daughtry, SMiLE.dk, Trading  Yesterday (aka The Age of Information), she, Eiffel 65, Rockapella, AQUA, Pendulum, Lady Gaga,  Savlonic, Perpetuum Jazzile, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, or any of the Japanese/Korean music I listen to.

I can get her to listen to instrumental techno or house sometimes when she finds a beat she likes, but noooothing with lyrics, and she HATES Night Core. I love night core music, though, it's good to give me energy even if the sped up lyrics on some songs can get annoying.

I share NOTHING in the music range with my father, though. He listens to country, country, and more country, and just... no. I hate country. ONly one I like is Alan Jackson in his OLD stuff, and that's pushing it. Dad won't even TRY to listen to anything else, though. My little sister is the same way. Country only.

At least I inherited the love of VARIED GENRE in music, like Mom, even if I think I'm a biiiit
more varied than she is.

I share both of my parents musical tastes for the most part. They both love 80's music, and so do I. However, my mom also likes disco, which I don't really care for.

My parents have always been into more "Old School" Hip-Hop and R&B as well as Gospel.  I also enjoy some of the stuff they listen to from time to time.

My musical tastes and my parents musical tastes are pretty similar.

Thankfully, I don't like any of the rap and pop songs that it seems most other people my age like. I like
good music.

I mostly like Gospel music. I like Rock music as well. My parents have those same interests, and I'm interested in most of the music they listen to. That allows for more family bonding

PacmanandMariofan : I'm glad more people hate rap Besides it's not even music

Yes, similar tastes allow better bonding. My mom and I have very different taste, and to be honest I'm not all that close to her

I agree with rap on a modern day level. It's a bunch of BS nowadays. My parents grew up when rap was good like NWA, Run DMC, Whodini, and all the other artists that were around when rap meant something and had a message. Today's rap I can't stand.

Since my dad spent his teens in the 80s, he has a lot of prog rock and new wave from that era. Stuff like Rush, The Human League, etc. Although I have some different tastes, I think my dad influenced a lot of what's in my record collection. My mom is a different story. I'm heavily into experimental and electronic music; just about anything with a strong beat, which contrasts my mom's taste in mellow, quiet bluegrass and easy listening. Practically everything I'm into drives her bonkers, so I have to keep it mostly to myself.

My whole family mostly likes any type of rock music. I know this is just a parents thread, but lemme add that my sister's favorite band is Offspring and my brother's favorite band is Linkin Park.

My dad's favorite bands are Rush and Metallica. He is the biggest reason why I'm such a big rock fan. All I was listening to growing up was Rush and Metallica. In my case, I like Metallica more than I do Rush. He likes Rush more than Metallica.

My mom has some good taste too. Her favorite band is Queen. She listens to Queen, Pink Floyd, and Foreigner to name a few. Each band has a couple of good songs for my taste as well.

So I have similar tastes as my family, but my taste tends to evolve sometimes.

My parents only listen to gospel. And with be being agnostic, it's gets really annoying whenever I ride with them. Almost to the point where it's offensive, because they get pissed and raise Cain if I ask them if they change it to something else.

MattyIce : Your father is into Metallica? Wow.

I also salute your mother's tastes. Queen had some very nice songs. It's quite ironic to see Freddy Mercury becoming such an icon in a domain where... "his kind" is usually looked down upon

Well, my dad is into old rock, like AC DC and Rush. Stuff like that. I can't stand that stuff. My Mom likes the Beatles, Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Stevie Wonders and some classic tunes from the 80's. While I don't like a lot of what she likes, I do like some it. And she likes what I listen to as well, so musically, we get along pretty well.

Me and my parents have pretty close tastes. We both like the Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan and that kind of thing, but I also like jpop and the like. More or less the same, with very slight differences.

My biological mom and I shared the same taste.  She liked Queen, Yani, Paul Simon, Micheal Jackson, and Enya.  Then when I started to listen to various jpop groups she loved to listen to that too.

My dad on the other hand has such different taste in music.  He only likes groups from the 60's and nothing else.  He can't stand anything from other countries, orchestral, or techno.  So when I lived with him I had to keep everything to myself.  He's the same thing with everything though.

My mom will and will forever like country music. I always had to listen to it growing up and it kind of grew on me but I still don't like country music much at all. Some things I can stand but some I'm just like wait what!!! When I play some of the things I like my mom likes most of it.. but she hates rap.. I won't lie. Rap is one of my favorite genres though.

My dad on the other hand .. I'm not sure sense hes an abusive alcoholic who doesn't care anything about us much or less at all. I have nothing to do with him at this point.

janus : I am the type of person that enjoys about 85% of the music that is being listened to. My mom happens to listen to a genre of music located in the 15% of the music I just can't deal with. The genre I am talking I would have to describe as the worst Pop 80's music I have ever had the misfortune to listen to. Now when she listens to some 80's rock I am all for it. Hair bands are pretty awesome in my opinion. Over the years she continued with the genre of Pop and switches back and forth from the two. Now when talking about my Dad, he likes Country and Rock & Roll of all decades. Now when I say Rock & Roll I am not referring to screamo/heavy metal. I love Country and Rock & Roll, so it is much easier to be around my dad when music is being played.

Well all I can say is
that my parents really liked classic music (lol),
but me and my dad share a love for rock .
I also like house and techno.
