Hey, everyone me monster here. And I honestly don't know where this thread can be in except for debate, but in debate I can't post, so that was out of the question, too.

Anyway, what  sort of countries do you think fits in ''Western culture''?

Do you think northern europe countries fit in, like the UK, and Holland? Or do you think that only the US and canada fit in western culture.
As for me, I think that countries like spain don't fit in, but countries like England do.
And no NintendoFanKimmy: Lebanon and Egypt don't fit in ;P

I'm having trouble understanding what you mean. What do you mean by 'Western Culture'? Please explain the definition more.

Um... I'm not exactly sure what exactly is western culture, but I've always considered countries on the western side of the world having the 'western culture' since I'm Asian and we have the eastern culture (and Australia I guess, but I think they're more like western people).

Juliet : I see, yeah the problem is that some countries that aren't in the west still have western culture.  A great example is Australia.

I guess western culture would be European countries, the Americas, and Australia (though Australia is in the Asia and Oceania area)

Western culture, I first think of America. I don't really think of Canada, I somehow forget it exists a lot, as bad as that sounds, but maybe that's a good thing. If you know a country exists outside your own, it's probably because something really bad is happening over there regarding your country. (ie, Some Muslim countries housing the Taliban) or something you really like comes from that country (like video games from Japan.

Canada isn't a place I hate nor love, I simply have little to no information about the area, though realizing at least one of my friends come from Canada, and that the U.S. and Canada are friends. This makes me more interested in the country. I haven't heard about any rough relationships with them. And I believe we have fought terrorists together before, though I believe Canada's input was fairly small, they don't have a military like we do, in fact, no country does. Save maybe Russia.

But anyways, I know that Canada is more socialistic, I find that a bit indifferent to the United States of America, but with Obama, we're sunk anyways. It seems the U.S. can only get worse and worse since World war two. People are going nuts, and I don't think that we'll recover. Ever. The good old U.S.A? We're a light in a dark place, but people just aren't caring. There has to be some kind of a revival, or else crap like that naked bicycle race will become all the rage. "If it doesn't hurt anyone it's okay!"

Wrong, not just any kind of human behavior is acceptable. There's something called restraint. It let's you make wiser choices for the future and for those around you.

I guess that the idea of western makes me think of the U.S. first and foremost, and the U.K. Plus European Countries here and there. And Canada, though, I know so little about the place that it has hardly been in my mind till recently. It's odd really, I want to learn more about it now. I mean, they're our next door neighbors. You might say that the U.S. should be glad to have a country like that for it's neighbors.

Based on the purely technical term, I would say all countries in North and South America.

Based on how the term is used, I would consider all countries that hold to the idea of freedom of speech. (Unless your calling out the quirk of the day.) Freedom of press. Freedom of religion. And emphasis on independence. . . . . from your family. . . . . and trusting + pointlessly complaining and not doing anything about it Criticizing logically. but still not doing anything about it. . . . . . . Your government. Being. . . "Ethically involved" (Whatever the political figure head pushing the edge what's, you get on the bandwagon with. You, and Holywood, or else you're uncool.)

That's what I call Western culture.

No, not at all in my opinion. To me, Western Culture would be a reference to the culture of mostly the U.S. and Canada. Though mostly it's used in reference to the U.S.

The reason I would say so is because Eastern culture applies to Asia, and not Europe. So with the U.K. and Holland being on a different continent than the U.S. and Canada, I would assume that it wouldn't be considered a part of the West much the same.

Really in the end it depends more on what a specific country's culture is like than where they are on a map. You can't set a map boundary on culture of any kind.

Western culture used to refer to countries in the western part of Europe. Since they seemed to fare better than the rest of their European counterparts, their culture spread while the rest adopted the changes. So essentially, western could mean all of Europe. So when the Americas were colonized, all of that "western" culture was spread to here. And since the USA is such a dominant power today, it's not surprising to see aspects of it spread throughout nearly every culture in the world.

So what I'm getting at is depending on the definition, you could say every country is "western". Nearly everyone knows some words in English, and our products (Coca-Cola, McDonalds) are recognized worldwide. Even Oriental countries such as China and Japan look more like the US (save for demographics) every day. There really isn't a boundary on Western culture anymore.

imamonster : I'm not sure which countries would fit into "western culture" But I am pretty sure it is not just the U. S and Canada. I think the following fit for sure: England, Taiwan, Japan, Holland, and perhaps South Korea
