We all know about the downloadable game markets, Steam alone has an incredible amount of users... But, I also know that many people actively avoid using Steam and they go to alternatives like Uplay or Origin. I was wondering does the Vizzed community have a preference?

Uplay is Ubisoft's version of Digital gaming, but this severely limits the library, and it also means that there are WAY fewer games to try out, as it's one developer, one distributor.

Origin is EA Games take on Steam, but this also has the same issue that Uplay has. A very limited library takes a lot of getting used to, but a unique feature is that it has the On the House and Game Time feature. The first one I mentioned gives a game for free, once you begin installation, it's yours to keep forever. Game Time gives you a 24 hour period when you can play the game, but if you don't finish within that time, tough luck.
Currently in Game Time:
Titanfall
Battlefield 4
The Sims 4
Currently there is Theme Hospital available in the On the House feature.

Steam is a collage of many developers distributors and many other things. The large collection of Free-To-Play, Demos, Indie and Popular games makes this by far one of the biggest. There are more than 6 Million users logged in each day! The Demo list depends on what genre you look up and the Free-To-Play games include phenomenal games like: Counter-Strike Nexon Zombies, Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and many more. Popular games like Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Final Fantasy, and other games have been added to Steam's expansive collection.

Cons of all of these are: There is no additional space needed to store the games, not to mention the great sales that are available. Steam has sales up to 90% and this isn't just a rare occasion, I've seen several games has sales as close to 90% as it gets. (Often they don't quite reach that.)

Which digital game distributor do you use? Or do you avoid using these and stick with the physical Disk Copy?

I personally enjoy Steam the most. I don't use U-Play, but I do use both Steam and Origin, and I prefer Steam by far. It's all around easier to use, as well as contains more content, so Steam is my #1 choice.

darthyoda : Hi there! The one I use most is steam. I also use Origin, but that's for only one or two games. I don't use Opal.

A lot of time people would stay away from steam because of one feature. Steam Green light. It's a system, where anyone can vote for pretty much any game to get on steam. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad. Valve (the company who made Steam) doesn't look at Green light games. So if people vote for it, the game gets on Steam. A good example of a really bad game getting on Steam, because of Green light would be Air Control. It's took Valve months to notice it and get the game off Steam.

   I hope I helped. Sincerely gamelover1231.

zanderlex : Uplay definitely stays under the radar for many, but for games such as AC you need to have it installed to play. If you read some reviews on Steam they complain about that feature.

Have you gotten back on Origin to use and play games, or you checked it out and abandon it? I only look for a cool free game, which I really haven't found.

I don't think I've ever played a game that was directly from orgin, I've only been on the site no more than 3 times ever just complaining about the prices.

Steam is far superior than the others and Uplay is the worst thing in existence. The reason is that there is absolutely no reason for Ubisoft to have their own content distribution program. Any Ubisoft game that you get, whether if it's through CD, through Steam, or through download from online, Uplay is required to be downloaded. I recently was able to get the first few Assassin's Creed games from a Steam sale, and after installing it I spent time to install Uplay. It's quite a hassle. Also, the program is glitchy to the point that I used to not be able to play those games due to Uplay shutting down. I had to go through some administrative access in order to get the program to work. Uplay is horrible and useless in its existence.

Origin is ok in that some times they sell EA games cheaper than Steam. The problem is that Origin requires to be online in order to play those games. So if you didn't already log into Origin and set to offline mode, you can't play them. It's these small requirements that ruins the flexibility of people to play the games that they own, like if they want to play on a laptop with no internet.

There are some distributing sites that you've left out, like GoG.com, which distributes old classic PC games, and Amazon games download, which no one uses due to these other sites.

gamelover1231 : Why would people stay away because of green light. Nobody makes you buy the games, and if you buy games without bothering to look for details or reviews on them in the first place you get what you deserve... Green light has bought us some amazing indie games as well that origin and u-play will not do because unlike the latter two, Steam allows non valve games on it..

U-play and Origin are both just meh. I see them as two annoying things that try to leech of steam's success and force PC users to register there games to it so they can actually play them...

Steam may have a few problems here and there, But it's nothing compared to u-play and origin... Ubisoft have just been rubbish over the last 12 months and origin has always been mediocre at best...

Personally I'm an avid Steam user, I only used Origin when I bought the 2nd Assassin's Creed game (same case as others it would seem). Though I have not used Origin, from what I understand there are a number of people that dislike it due to wide spread bugs in the whole system, such as games ceasing to function out of nowhere, and transactions that did not actually happen. However, I did hear that the customer service is great, support responds fast and makes no fuss about helping users out. Compare this to Steam, where one could send Steam Support a message and not be attended to for months, if at all. As of late, fortunately Steam created the Steam curators to help with the shovel-ware problems they have been having for the last few years when they loosened their grip on what came through.

My knowledge at this moment on U-Play is limited to the minute or two I spend in it opening Assassin's Creed from time to time, but it appears that it is just a re-skinned and re-arranged copy of Steam's user interface. And I believe it is only limited to using Ubisoft related products so I don't see why their business department decided it would be appropriate to get their foot in the door of DRM software in this manner. Marketing is marketing I suppose. All in all though, Steam is, at least in my opinion, the top DRM software available right now. An exceptionally large amount of content as well as community members, the wallet-draining sales, and intuitive shopping and library interfaces make it a product I am happy to use.

As a side note, competition does exist for Steam in the indie game market, particularly in GOG. I have bought a few games from them, all good quality, and the best part, no DRM problems so you can play online and offline without hassle. This does mean no integrated friends list and library list and such however. They also hold their own special sales for the games they sell, however since most of the games are indie they are not beyond the $20 range for the most part.

I use Origin a decent amount, usually to play FIFA 10 with the bro, and used to use U-play, but I mostly stick to Steam. U-play and Origin have their purposes. U-play's and Origin's designs are beautiful. But design alone cannot save a client. Steam is the least flashy client, but is also perhaps the most bulky, at least in terms of Store design, imo. It is not necessarily better than U-play or Origin for everything. But it is convenient, at the very least. And most gamers prefer Steam over Origin or U-play.
