I think I originally posted this in the wrong spot so I've re-posted it

Hi guys, So I'm in my final year of school this year and there has been something on my mind for a while.

I
really don't want to to go to my Year 12 formal (or dance night) or the
farewell assembly for a few reasons. So I'm wondering. Did anyone not
go to theirs? Did they regret it? or did you go and like it?

Just a discussion

If this 'formal' is something like prom, you're really the only person that can answer the question.  My mother didn't attend hers and when we grew up, she said she always regretted it.  She forced me and my twin to go, even though we really didn't have that much interest in it. Personally, since I've had the experience.... I don't really think I would have missed a thing. I'm not very social, I didn't know my classmates well, and I didn't care for being 'dolled up' or dancing.  I've always been shy and not very out-going, so I can't say I would have regretted NOT going.

If you think in the future you will regret the decision, I'd say you should go. This way, at least, you'll know if you missed out or not, without always  having to wonder if it was something you'd enjoy (and then forcing your non-social kids to go.).

I'm asking that question too. Public school is the mass-production of citizens almost incapable of critical thinking. It should be obvious; standardized tests and teaching does not take into consideration below-and-above-average people.

No wonder so many alternatives (charter/private schools, language/sport/music programs) have popped up as no two humans are exactly the same. Without that accelerated English program at my high school (French is my first language), I would probably have lost interest in school as regular classes were not stimulating at all.

I favor education, just not schooling

RogueWarrior2785 : When I was in 12th grade back in 2011-2012, I didn't really had to wear any formal, because I didn't really care too much about school activities, the only thing I still manage to get at the end is my cap and gown for me to graduate from high school, but other than that, that was it. So if you really don't want to do anything, it ain't worth it.

Honestly, I didn't like prom very much. I did like the girl I took, but that was about it.

I feel like I enjoyed it more the second time around, because I loosened up. The first time I was in 11th taking a senior (12th), which was a little nerve-wracking.

But when I think back, I'm glad I went. It's another memory.

If it's going to be ridiculously expensive, or you have some other legitimate reason for wanting to skip, then it's fine, you won't be missing much. If it's more about wearing uncomfortable clothing for a few hours, then I think you should bear through it.

Mark Twain once said something to the effect of, "You end up regretting all the things you didn't do much more than the things you did do."

You get one crack at a formal.  You get one.  You can go and eat some food and talk with friends and experience it and say, "Oh, well, it wasn't magical but I went and I know," or you could not go and always have that question of "What if I went?  Why didn't I go?"

It's always, always, always better to go and do whatever it is available to do.  Maybe you'll have a lot of fun and really enjoy yourself.  Maybe it won't be the greatest and you'll say, "Oh, well."

But if you don't go, you'll never go.  I go to everything, even if I expect it to be terrible.  I've been pleasantly surprised that most experiences, especially the social ones, go very well and they're a lot of fun.

It's worth it. Go.

I don't think I will enjoy prom this year, and my upcoming senior year. Every year when I check the yearbook pages in the prom/homecoming section, all I see is people doing repulsive 'dancing' and grinding up on each other....normally, I'm the kind of person that likes to go and see things for myself rather than taking someone else's word for it, but I don't think I'm going...chances are, I'll just waste my money and then get raped in a million different directions by people I don't even know.

I've never been a party person to begin with, and the thought of being in a crowded space surrounded by tons of people with loud, lame music playing in the background just doesn't appeal to me. I don't think I'd miss an opportunity like this looking back on it either. Don't let my opinion dissuade you though, it all depends on what kind of person you are, if you find it appealing, then go for it, that way you don't have the chance to regret it later on in life.

That is up to you but me I refused to go to it. I threw a party instead and invited my friends to it. We had a blast and didn't have to sit through any big speeches or any of the other pomp and circumstance expected of that " Formal Event ". To me it was only worth going to if you wanted to be very social which I was not that kind of person in school. So yeah it's your call. I ditched mine and don't regret it one bit. On the other hand my girlfriend did go to hers the next year and I went with her. I spent most of my time bored when we were not dancing and about half the music ranged from crappy love songs and normal party favorites that you hate to hear at any wedding. My advice would be to ditch it but who knows you may enjoy it and have fun. I knew plenty of people that were at the one that I went to that just couldn't get over it and did enjoy themselves.

I had a lot of fun with Senior prom. It's something that I feel everyone should experience. Most people who wound up not going, regretted it. It's one night and senior year is special. Find some friends and get a few dates, and go together. I'm sure you will have fun.

I think that you should go, it might as well be something that you'll never do again. If you miss out on it, you might miss out on something fun. Now, if you go, and it sucked, you can at least tell your friends what happened there, and what the most interesting part was. And, hey, you never know. Anything can happen!

But here's the thing. I've never been to a prom (check my age). So, I might not be the best help, but the people of Vizzed can decide that for you.

I think it is an experience that you should try to make the best out of, try to find a person to go with or a group of friends, they have never reccomended me not to go, I haven't gone yet, I still a year before it happens, but everyone stresses the fact that it is a great experience that no one should miss. I think it is because you get to see many of the people on your graduating class together possibly for the last time (at least all together) who knows if everyone in there will have a chance to reunite 10 or 15 years later in a homecoming. My friend also makes the argument that he does not know how to dance, well good news. Reality is that probably 90% of the people that I have seen in dances do not know how to dance appropriately, there is no way to dance appropriately is all about subjective opinion, and well the prom dance is not all about dancing is mostly about spending time with your friends. I don't know about your school but my school always holds pretty fun themes for prom night I know last year the theme was the Great Gatsby so everyone wore something that was from the age of Great Gatsby and it was a pretty neat experience from what I heard. Prom night is one of the things that I look forward to the most because it will be a way to remember many of the people in your class. I advise you to go, but it is up to you. Remember that it is not for what others think but rather for your own enjoyment so do not worry and try to make it the perfect night, just make it a night to remember positively.
