Autism is defined in psychology textbooks as “a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by impaired social and communication skills and rigid and repetitive patterns of behavior.” Whoa! My doctor says I have Autism and I don’t have any idea what all of that even means! Let me tell you what Autism really is.
I am different from other people because no two people are alike. No one is the same. Sometimes I talk about weird stuff. I really like to talk about mega man. I do not know anyone else who likes mega man. Sometimes people walk away when I talk about mega man. Sometimes when I talk about Mega man people make fun of me and say I like things that does not exist anymore.

When people make fun of me, it makes me want to bite them, or growl at them, or even kick them. I know it is not okay to do that and that it is best to walk away. I used to bite and kick people because I was really mad and I did not know what to do.
I really like to draw pictures. I will draw on anything I can. I draw every day. I draw for comfort and entertainment. Sometimes I draw to express my feelings.

Some autistic people cannot speak but they can still listen. Even if they cannot talk, a person is still a person. They still have feelings and want to be treated like people.
I hate vacuum cleaners. They are so noisy. I can hear noises other people do not because they are too far away. Sometimes there is just too much noise, but other people cannot hear it. When i hear too much loud noises, it will hurt my ears. Even though I hate Vacuum cleaners, I love music. I hear music every day even if other people cannot hear it. I listen or play music for comfort and entertainment. I sometimes use lines from songs to tell people how I feel. Sometimes, sad songs can cheer me up when I am sad while other songs inspire me to draw something.
I have a weird thing against textures in my clothing. Each time I feel tags in my clothing I get very squirmy and cannot sit still until it is gone. I also have a problem with wearing socks. Since sometimes I do not like fabric on my feet, it always bothers me, so sometimes when I am not wearing socks, I wear my shoes all day and i never take them off or else people will feel sorry for me and my feet.
Sometimes autistic people are misunderstood and other times they misunderstand things. Sometimes I try to do my best to be like other people but I don’t always do it. Autistic people are people too. They are not for bad jokes, that will hurt their feelings and that will make them upset, and they are not used for slavery, they are used for their own desire. They are different, just like everyone else.

Thank you so much for this thread! I too have Autism, but it's more mild than yours. I have quite a few texture issues. For example, I seem to not be able to bring myself to deal with static pokes when I don't have to. I keep doing this really awkward thing where I hold on to something that might give me a static poke, and I continuously do that until I've taken my coat off or whatever I wanted to do. Also, a lot of tags I can barely stand, just like you.

Impaired social and communication skills is one of the main parts of Autism. When I was diagnosed with it at age 2, it made sense because I stopped talking and I was more sensitive. I kept making whining sounds instead of using my words, which at the time was very difficult for me.

I think another big part of Autism is it can make you easily obsessed with something. For a few years, I was really obsessed with clocks and time. I even said the time every time a minute had passed and ticked off my parents. It's not always a bad thing.

For example, my obsession with my first girl friend (notice the space which means we're just friends) was a big help for getting myself to talk to her. If it wasn't for that, it would've taken a lot longer for me to care a lot about girls, let alone talk to them and even become close friends with them. I was even shy to talk to girls here, but that's not happening anymore.

Another problem I have is that I can almost never hide my feelings in real life. I don't know if that's because of Autism, but it seems to be a very uncommon problem. Almost every time I'm embarrassed, my face and ears turn red, usually very red. I usually can't prevent it, even by taking deep breaths or trying to think about something else.

I have to deal with so much crud because of Autism every day, but I'm so glad that I have Autism. It has made me so caring, sympathetic, and understanding and it makes me so grateful for even little things like being able to talk.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Autistic people are commonly stereotyped and Autism has become a common insult too. One time, someone at my lunch table said the person next to him must be Autistic or something, instead of just saying he must be stupid. So I spoke up and told him that I have Autism so I know what it actually is and does. Everyone at the table ignored me.

I also have Autism, but it's much less severe than it was four years ago.

I still have issues with aggression (i get offended VERY easily) and socializing, but I've lately been overcoming that ever so slightly.

I used to have an extreme case of naiveté as well as poor taste in clothing (it seems me and my puffy sweater were inseparable).

In the end, though, I've grown appreciative for my case. Like Pacman said, i can see the world through a whole different lens and I've learned a lot from it that i wouldn't have otherwise.

I have Autism too. Its not anything severe. I have issues with social communication.....i never liked talking to people i have never met. I have a hard time making friends. Also I have a hard time understanding things...it takes me more time than needed for me to learn anything new. I been called weird and strange but not in an offensive way.

No matter who you are, or anything that could possibly limit you as a person, it should be society's duty to fully accept you as who you are, and let you lead as normal a life as possible. Thankfully, the Vizzed community, myself included, are more than ready to welcome you with open arms, and I appreciate that everyone can have the same opportunities and abilities on this site.

And, it has come to my attention that "autism" is used as an insult in the daily life of teenagers, as well as other snarl words such as "fag" and "retard," but rest assured, as long as you try, you will find more who are friendly to you than those who would use disabilities or sexuality against you or someone else.

SMBLOZ123 : I hate it so much when people say fag and the R word (I'm not even going to say the awful word that should be considered a curse word) It makes me so mad but normally when someone says it I just ignore them because those kind of people are not worth my time.
