You know who I am talking about. It is that crazy one that just will not let you hang up the phone, or that one that seems to stalk you around the store, waiting to snatch up a sale. These people get on my nerves. I am not one of these people. I am something of a salesman, I work for a small drugstore just down my street. My job is to watch the front register, sell candy, and as of now flu shots. I want to sell people something so I can bring in the points, but I also know when to stop. I know when they could care less about anything I have to offer, even if it should be their favorite candy bar at the lowest price ever. I am a salesman, but I do not think that I am a pushy salesman, and I certainly try hard not to be whilst still getting the points that I need to help my store. I hope you all will not get too angry with me just because I have somewhat loose ties with those salesman that annoy you. We are not all bad. Some actually do have sincere care about our customers and really just want to be of the most assistance that we could possibly be.

FaithFighter : People should be more sympathetic, ever since the phone survey systems took over- there is all sorts of P's and Q's noted that people may not have realized were required of the workers. I'm talking about the surveys that they tell you to call the number at the bottom of a receipt for some free thing, and it will usually ask on a scale of 1-5 how they did. Some questions can tell you what they have to put up with. Did ___ offer you an appetizer? If so, was it the Super Shrimp Season Special?

That kind of drek.

I just hate how some of the salesmen that I have seen these days are just very desperate to get sales. Shouldn't they try their best to help their customers in the best way possible especially if they are interested in a product? The worst part is hearing lies and  getting fake advertisement from them. That ticks me off the most.

I have met some pretty good salespeople so I am not gonna pick on every single one of them due to my bad experiences from others. It is important to satisfy the customers' needs and when they are happy, you're happy as well. That's the best part of the job.

Quality service is better than desperate needs.

ghostfishy : You are spot on right about that ghostfishy! I myself derive the most pleasure from having helped a customer find what they really wanted. There is no amount of pushed candy bars that can make up for that feeling.

You underestimate how hounding store managers and higher ups are on their workers. More often then not their job is on the line and I know it is annoying to deal with but do you seriously think they enjoy doing it? There is a difference working in small businesses compared to big ones so i understand you have experience in it however big corporate isn't the same as mom and pop shops. They put a lot of stress on getting their numbers how they want them, these workers are required to ask.

styrofoamboots : I do understand the emphasis that a lot of mangers will put on their employees. My store is Walgreens. I did not really consider it a mom and pop shop. Hitting those numbers is stressed. And the sales in cosmetics is how we get our hours. So I also know about your job being on the line--although perhaps in a loose sense. I just know that even in that, being annoying is not going to win your sales goal. Customer service does. Earning the love and trust of your customers matters. I have a couple people that when they come in they buy candy because they know it helps me. A customer is more likely to return when you give them the service they want, and don't push the limits. I know the people who have to do what they do probably do not like what they have to do...or all the junk they get from people. I was mainly trying to say that I was something of a salesman, but not the ones that annoy you all the time.

There is sometimes pressure from bosses but we also need to keep in mind that some sales jobs aren't about points or quotas, they're about cold hard cash. It may be true that the most high pressure salesmen are working on commission. If they don't make a sale, they can't provide for their family.

I've had 2 jobs that were commission only and it was sink or swim. Commission which means that a sales person is required to sell a product or service for at least X amount of dollars that they must give to the owner and everything in excess of the base price is theirs to keep and pay taxes on. There is NO hourly or salary pay check.

It's kind of a crappy deal unless you sell a lot of product. The more sales a person makes, the higher their profit.

I'm not a fan of pushy salesmen either. There was even one who I felt scared of. I stopped doing college work at one of my favorite spots because of the number of times I'd get bothered.

I understand where they're coming from, but they make me uncomfortable and what it takes to get one off your back is even worse. I'm one to take time to think before I buy anything, and I just don't want to deal with them.

Sometimes it can be fun ..  when you get a call from a telemarketer, to take them on a little story. Get creative with it. And door to door people (rare though they are) I had a buddy who knew how to scare them off, in his bath towel.
