I'm going to try and make as much sense as possible, but computers aren't my thing and I'm so frustrated that I'm trying hard to keep calm. You   see, I have Windows 8 and it forces me to do computer updates every now and then, right?  Well, a long, long time ago, my computer apparently didn't like some update because whenever the 'updates' occur, my computer would say something like "Failure to install update. Reconfiguring.... yada yada."  My computer would then go into a loop of trying to force the update and then reconfiguring... until finally... something would click and my computer would start up properly.  Sometimes this would take 5 minutes and a few times it took 2.5 hours.

We tried turning off the updates, but that was more annoying than an update once a month.  This green bar would pop across my screen just about every 5 minutes about how my computer wouldn't do updates or something (I can't remember now what it said).  From my research, I couldn't disable it, and I couldn't continue to use my computer unless I actually clicked exit.  (And every five minutes... this was too annoying to deal with.)

Well, today when my computer went into the forced update.... the error message screen was COMPLETELY different and I Wasn't sure what to do.  It even listed the error for me, which I thought was nice.  I looked the error up (0xc000021a), but that stuff is way too technical for me.

I tried selecting some option like "Go on and head to Windows 8", but instead of moving into my computer, it simply kept trying to do the update.  I looked at the advanced options, and even under that choice... there was another advanced options button. I clicked on that, and there were four choices.  The first two said "refresh PC" and "restore PC".  I looked under 'refresh', and it had a list like "all your files will be saved", "all your apps will be saved"...

I thought hey... refresh.. maybe that will work.

I clicked on it... and.. it took FOREVER... I started to get really worried because it was taking so long, and it had this screen I'd never seen before with all these flashing colors advising me to be patient.

FINALLY..... my computer booted up.
Except.....it uninstalled tons of my apps.  There's this icon on my desktop that says "Removed Apps". If I click on it, it gives me a list, which I'll paste into the end of this thread.

Amongst those removed is my Microsoft Office!!!!!  For some reason it's not on the list, but when I try to open any documents, I get the response that I don't have the program.  It asks for a product key or gives me the option to reclaim it through an 'account', but Office CAME with this computer.  I don't have a product key or account!  I'm really, really frustrated because I NEED Office to complete my work, and I can't afford to buy it... it's so pricey!!!!

I thought I'd simply do a system restore.... trying to calm myself down..... but all my system restore points ARE GONE!!!!  It's like my computer restored itself to factory settings... not refreshed.

I'm so upset.. I don't know how to fix this or if it's even fixable.... Please help....

Well that escalated quickly.

I hate when I have to do these updates, usually I am on the internets and the internet itself just stops, I don't disconect, it just stops. When I click on restart, it says update and restart and when this happens, it usually takes about 40 minutes to an hour for it to turn back on.

this is terrible, though I never heard of this happening, so I wouldn't know what to do, have you tried contacting support already?

That's terrible! I don't know what to say...T_T We've had some computers with important docs go out on us before. But this sounds pretty bad. I'll be praying for you! I hope this all gets sorted out soon.

supernerd117 :    It's not the documents I need... it's Microsoft Office. I can't do my job without it.  I can't afford to repurchase it.  And I can't afford to pay someone $100 just to LOOK at my computer, much less do anything to it.

I mean, there's also the annoyance that my computer set up was 1.5 years in the making.  Now I have to remember what I had installed, put everything back in its place, etc etc.  It saved my files, but if I don't have a way to access them, what good is that?

For google chrome, if you had your bookmarks and stuff saved on your google account, then just reinstall google chrome, sign in to your account, and you'll have everything back for google chrome.

As for Microsoft Office.... Uhh.... The only thing that seems possible is to reinstall Microsoft Office and then put in the product key that was used before. But if you don't have any copy of Microsoft Office with a valid product key.... Uhh.... Then I guess you could contact your hardware manufacturer and tell them about this and perhaps they might be kind enough to send you a free copy but I'm not sure...

That's pretty weird, but if you still have your files it shouldn't be too bad to reinstall most programs. Chrome might have saved your bookmarks. For getting Office back though, you might have to end up calling wherever you bought the computer from. In the mean time, you could try using LibreOffice which is free. http://www.libreoffice.org/

So I went and worked out to vent my stress over the situation, and came back to my computer with a clear mind.  I have to tell you.. God DOES bless!!!!

About a month (maybe two months ago), I remember working on Word when it asked me something weird about logging in. (I was on a work computer, maybe?)  I had never seen that screen on my laptop, so I followed the prompts and it set up an account for me. I specifically remember how weird this was because it let me pick designs to show on the menu bar, and even showed my account name in the same bar.   However,  I really thought nothing of it afterwards.

When I just now came back to my computer, I decided to try that log in information just to see... and it worked!!!!  I got my Microsoft Office back. I'm soooooo happy!  There's no way I would have had an account if it weren't for that one day, so I'm thankful to God for looking out for me!

Also, I got Chrome installed and you guys were right.... all my bookmarks are there!!!!!  I still have to remember what add-ons I had and re installthem I guess, but luckily I'm a person who hardly ever installs anything to my computer because I'm kind of weird about stuff like that.  Obviously that list on my desktop isn't complete, but at least I have a list to start with until I figure out what else is missing.

Thank you all sooooo much for your advice!  I usually don't panic over stuff like this, but being able to do my work at home is pretty important to me. I'd never meet my deadlines if I couldn't use my laptop and its programs.

If anyone can give me tips on how to further secure my information and stuff, that'd be great.    (Especially if you know what's up with the stupid updating problem.)

God bless, and have a beautiful day!

Singelli :
I am not an expert of computers but, if you have a USB key or an external hard drive, I suggest you to use it to store some stuff, Singelli (for example Microsoft Office if that happens in the future). I have a USB key with important datas and files stored in it since what happened with my computer a while ago. It's just in case my laptop has some big troubles. I even have a "tool" in this USB key if I need to fix some problems.

Laian : I don't know if storing Microsoft Office on a flash drive would really help because I don't think you'd be able to run it without reinstalling it anyway, but it's always a good idea to back up other files just in case.

It looks like everything is as close to being back to normal as it's going to be. Now we have to get at the root of the problem and pull it out just like a weed. I don't have any ultra specific advice like delete X file or turn X program off but I have some general advice.

Click here and do some forum shopping. (I trust you are no stranger to how forums work )

That link is a top ten list of computer technician forums that I pulled from Google. Pick one and be sure to read their "read this before posting" thread. Follow all directions in that thread and if you have any problems, I am willing to help you here or through PM. Those guys work for free and use those forums to expand their knowledge base. Usually, they will ask you to download some free program that monitors your computer files as they're running and then they ask you to copy/paste the programs output into a reply post. It's basically like borrowing their brain while you actually do the labor.

That is the best solution that I think you will come up that has the potential to fix the problem and is also free. Let me know what you decide?

I'm usually not in the mood for discussing this kind of thing in my leisure, but I work as an IT part-time and I've had to deal with clients having similar issues many times before.

What generally takes part in this kind of situation is the system settings (more specifically, Firewall and Windows Update settings and how they work by default), alongside faulty and/or incompatible software that corrupted system files. The latter could be either viruses, or just poorly programmed software that mess up with System files they shouldn't mess with. Either way, there are two actions that you could take.

First thing you could do is simply disable auto-updates. I don't advise that, but it will prevent booting issues for good. The downside is that this would make your system vulnerable, to a certain extent. You would have to be the one to manually update your system if you do that, in order to keep it safe. For an average user, it's hard to pick the proper updates, since they don't know what's really necessary and what's not, so again... I don't advise it. I'm simply listing it here since it is still a valid fix (or rather, a palliative fix), in case everything fails and it's an emergency situation where you need access to the computer at hand as soon as possible.

The second one is to format your system. That's not something an average user would know how to do though and I wouldn't advise trying it yourself, it can be a headache depending on how it goes. That would require someone that have done it before, be it a professional or just someone with enough computer knowledge. Be especially careful with those though, many self-proclaimed experts end up making things even worse more often than not. Either way, formatting here is more than a valid advice, it's actually a recommendation, because your system restored itself to a previous point, this is usually because of corrupted system files. If that's the case, your system might become unstable after a while, risking your laptop and the files within it, so keep that in mind.

If you do decide to take the advice of formatting your system at some point, I have another advice to give, this one is optional though, you don't have to take it. Consider downgrading to Windows 7. "Why downgrade?" There are a lot of reasons, but I'll stick to the most relevant ones. To start, Windows 8 demands a lot performance-wise from computers, in comparison to windows 7, even though there haven't been major changes to the core system itself, most were strictly interface changes. Not only that, but some of these happen to be not so user friendly, especially when it comes to System settings, usually making inexperienced users have a hard time struggling when they have to figure out something by themselves. Finally, Windows 7 tends to be more reliable when it comes to system stability and most other issues, plus it has less compatibility issues with most programs, not to mention performance issues with a lot of programs.

All-in-all, regardless of what you decide to do, keep in mind formatting is something that could save you a lot of trouble. I personally advise every one of my clients to have their computers formatted every 1 or 2 years. People tend to think computer issues are caused by defective and/or outdated specs, but on the vast majority of the time the problems the machines have are exclusively system issues, a simple measure like properly formatting it can make the computer perform as if it was brand new. It is also way cheaper than buying a brand new one, like a lot of people do due to misinformation.

Anyways I hope my input helps you out, even though apparently you sorted out the more pressing matters. Being able to prevent further issues never hurts though, especially with computers. Cheers

You've already been sorted so I'm not here to offer any help.  I just want to agree with mvhupsel on the Windows thing.  I would also strongly advise to go back to Windows 7 since it's much more stable than Windows 8.  I absolutely despise that OS.  It's only my humble opinion, and I don't make a habit of conspiracy theories and I'm saying this tongue in cheek, but I believe that Microsoft deliberately design a buggy OS now and again only to come up a couple of months later with a bit more solid system - all for the sake of making more money.  Why couldn't they just design a stable system from the start?  I actually believe they do, but they put the buggy thing out there, forcing customers to switch to the "new and improved" system until they get enough complaints (and more money) then they "fix" it and bring forth the better system forcing you again to switch and dish out yet more money.  Windows Vista followed by Windows 7 was a good example.
