Who -doesn't- love grilled cheese?  For it being such a classic, my mother never made it very often. Kind of sad, huh?    However, there are some AMAZING grilled cheese sandwiches out there!  I was watching some food show the other day and they were doing a special on grilled cheeses... I can't ever imagine spending that much time making a sandwich!

I would use the toaster to toast my bread, but after watching that show, my husband insists that 'baking' the bread is the only way to go.  The student I tutor also does this, using the 'broil' setting on her oven.

So it made me curious:  What is the best way to prepare a grilled cheese?

Also.... how else do you prepare it?  What kinds of cheeses?  Spices?  Other toppings?

Let's see who can describe the most mouth-watering cheesy heaven.

I put it in a pan on the stove, and I cook it on both sides. I put butter on both pieces of the bread. One piece will have the butter on the inside, and the other piece will have the butter on the outside.
I try not to burn them, but the little sandwich pan that we use combined with me having a tendency to cook things at the highest level on the stove to get them made faster, I have to flip it after about 45 seconds on each side, or it will be burned to a crisp.

Well, my family and I cheat. We actually have a sandwich-cooking machine. We put the sandwich with cheese in, close the top, and wait for the light to go green. Then, abrakadabra, we have a grilled cheese sandwich.

Good lord, a toaster?  My word.

I butter one side of one piece of bread and put that bread on a pan/skillet over low heat.  I like to put a layer of cheese on that bread (extra sharp chedder = A+++) and let it melt 30 seconds.  I'll add whatever I want, like carmelized onions, tomato, meat like ham slices or bacon, and top with a second slice of cheese and the buttered, outside only, top piece of bread.

I let it sit a while like that, perhaps three minutes, I flip it, the other side cooks, and I flip it once more to ensure the cheese has melted on both sides.  Then it is eaten with tomato soup or ketchup.  I like to put hot sauce in the ketchup because why not.

Extra butter, lots and lots of butter, and a good amount, but not too much of cheese. Of course, it is best cooked in a skillet or pan. You get a sense of accomplishment when you make a good grilled cheese sandwich through effort and care, instead of just watching a machine do the work for you.

Well, I dl my grilled cheese a bit differently, I use bagels instead because I love that much more than any old bread. I just pop a bagel in the toaster, put in two slices of cheese and then I put the bagel in the microwave for a few seconds and it tastes like heaven. Sometimes I add a small amount of butter and its amazing.

I don't even use butter, so I can't vote T.T   I find that for flavorful toast and wonderful grilled cheese, that using Mayo or Miracle Whip in place of butter is a delicious solution.  Not that there is any problem with buttered grilled cheese, i just like the taste that mayo/MW gives grilled cheese.  I usually spread some of the dressing on the bread and put whatever kind've cheese I want on and place one slice spread side down on the skillet, put the cheese on and then the other slice of bread.  Flip it a few times and cut into triangles and there you go, nice tasty Grilled cheese.  I do use butter every so often, but mayo/MW so far is my favorite option for grilled cheese.

One day I went to an eating place that had gourmet grilled cheese. Amazing stuff. The next day my sister tried to replicate it. She made it even yummier than the restaurant.

I like to cook my grilled cheese sandwiches on a waffle iron. It's extremely quick (cooks for 2 minutes because the iron cooks on both slices of bread at the same time) and extra tasty because it's legitimately grilled. Of course I butter it so it doesn't burn + it tastes better. I often like to add ham or turkey, and occasionally avocado.

zanderlex : I don't know, I'm usually just really boring and take two pieces of wheat bread, a slice of American cheese, lots of butter and sometimes bacon, and slow cook in a frying pan, but I could see flat bread....... I mean, using a pita pocket and some white, creamy cheese that melts well with a little crumbled feta, and you could get some Greek stuff going on there.

Leave it to this forum to make me drool over grilled cheese.
I typically throw a bit of margarine into a frying pan and let it melt. While it melts, I'll throw mayonnaise onto both sides of one piece of bread and let the one side brown. Then just put some cheese (bonus points for extra old cheddar), put some mayo on one side of another piece of bread, place it on top and flip it over until it's ready. Pretty old fashioned, but I like it!

Singelli : what i do is put cheese, ham, and put lots of butter in a pan and just cook until it is melted nice and good. i also replace the bread with tortillas sometimes, makes it more crunchy and delicious.

My personal favorite way to prepare grilled cheese is by using a skillet and butter. This method is in my opinion the best way to make it because it takes so much better that way.

I usually use a pan, and put the butter on the outside of one piece of bread, the inside of the other, and stick the cheese in the middle, with one of the buttered sides facing the bottom and the other on the inside of the sandwich.

They usually turn out pretty good, if I do say so myself.
