Donkey Kong was one of the first, if not the first big villain in a game.. but I agree with part of what you were saying didowe, I feel there were much better villains out there to take that #1 spot.

As far as personality, I always liked Ghaleon from Lunar: Silver Star...that was a great game on the ol' Sega CD...I remember playing through it many-a-time and Ghaleon was just a double-crossing bad-ass, especially when he became Magic Emperor...

I'd have to say Lavos from Chrono Trigger,I mean it takes you about 5 confrontations to kill him.But Giygas,hmm perhaps not since he dies by praying,really?Bowser,doesn't lose like that nor does Sephiroth or Ganondorf.

I always thought Kefka from FF6 (ff3 US)was the best villain that developed during the game. Just the way his character is so sinister in his actions, really good villain. Kefka is in my top spot. Sepheroth was also awesome.

Proto Man (Mega Man) and Venom (Spiderman) were awesome villain in that they were villains and then turned to "good guys", but still hated the main protagonist and wanted to destroy them.

id have to go with alec trevelyan from goldeneye on the n64. just by the fact from that huge plot change when u thought ur best comrad was dead and ended up pulling all the strings. plus the fact that u had to fight him at the end of the game, which he was fairly easy but still a great plot twist indeed.
