I curse or exclaim things often using the word Jesus. Until now I've never given much thought to upsetting any nearby Christians if I do it in public but i do remember being scolded as a kid and told "don't use the lords name in vain"
So my question to the Christians here is, does this bother you when you overhear someone doing it?

a-sassy-black-lady :  Absolutely.  It's called blasphemy and it's very serious in God's eyes.  You are basically using God's name as a four letter cuss word.  You trample the name of the God that gave you life.  It is interesting that in most movies Jesus Christ / God's name is almost always used as a cuss word, but not Mohammed or Buddha's name for example.  Why is that?  The Bible even gives an answer for that:
The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so." (Romans 8:7)
"The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me (Jesus) because I testify of it that its works are evil." (John 7:7)
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me (Jesus) before it hated you." (John 15:18)

Because these are western religions and western 'curses'.
If islam was bigger here it probably would be orone to cursing.
As for buddha, I doubt its so frowned upon, hes not regarded as divine, just a man with a good life outlook.

Saying gosh darn, or jesus Christ doesn't tend for most,to be offensive, because like many words, its original meaning has been largely forgotten. It might as well be slang now.
When someone is frustrated, and says jesus Christ, it's typically the case that their mind doesn't even register the figure or the faith.

Does it bother me?  No.  Anytime someone does something or says something or creates a negative emotion like anger, hatred, or being upset, they're exerting control over you.  I use certain words and I don't use other words.  Some times I just don't say because I think it's a reflection of how smart a person is.  If other people use them, they can go right ahead.  It doesn't bother me.  I'm less than impressed if someone swears but it does not bother me in the least.

If anyone wants to think God (or whoever) gets upset when their name is used, then God will deal with that person.  It's not up to me to be the one to deal with that person.

No.  I'm not bothered by anything anyone says.

No they don't upset me. While I can understand why it bothers some people, it doesn't really affect me-or at least I don't let it affect me.
I, personally, try not to do it-but I know I do whenever I'm frustrated about a situation. So for me to be upset about them using the Lord's name in vain would be rather hypocritical, would it not?

The way I look at it is, some people will use curse using the Lord's name, and that's on them. I don't blame anyone for my decision to do it, when I do, but if I know I'm around a person who doesn't like it(and I know it), I make a conscious effort to not use his name in vain. Matter of respect, I feel.

So my question in turn for you, a-sassy-black-lady, is when you use his name in vain do you feel convicted? And please do not confuse conviction with shame, because they are not the same thing.

I find it ironic that the people who say "God-damnit" the most are the ones who claim to not believe in God. I fail to see the point of the saying if it is basically meaningless to them.

As for me, the only "curse" that I dislike is God-damnit. Say anything else you want basically but leave God out of it.

It does not bother me, I try not to judge at all because as a Christian we are supposed to love and not judge. I look at it like this, I cannot get upset over something I have no control over, they are the ones that if they really offend God then in the end they will be the ones to pay their restitution.

geeogree :
It is ironic but as I stated, its more like a cultural habit than any actual intent toward jesus.
You would be surprised the amount of things you say regularly with completely different meanings/relevancies as little as 40 years ago.
Even other slang, like son of a b****, or Ba****d.
Most people wouldnt even know what those things are, and they don't give a great deal of thought to what they say.

I guess it does a little bit: I had some friends who did it occasionally, but they weren't Christian, so they wouldn't get why it would bother me at all. I'd maybe grimace, but I usually didn't say much about it. I knew that it was inexcusable for me to do that and I lived to be an example for my friends. This  does not mean that I didn't curse myself, though I tried hard not to and succeeded more often than not. We can't always control our actions and some words I didn't consider as curses such as 'crap'. It is a somewhat charged question because it depends on who is listening.

Absolutely. But besides it bothering me,I just don't get the whole concept. I mean, we don't do that to other people's gods. You're not going to see this: "I'm walking down the street, 'hey, Bill' I stub my toe. 'Buddah! Buddah! Harry h Chrishna look at that bruise!' You don't see that. Why do you do it to us? It's just something I do not get. Even though I know other people's gods aren't the true GOD I still don't use their name as though it were nothing but trash.

Yes, I get stumbled easily by this. I feel uncomfortable around the person who says it. It is not like I hate the person, I just don't like it when a person uses God's name for anything that isn't glorify Him in the process. Same goes for Jesus's name. Now, when they do not believe in God and say "Thank God." or "For God's sake!", they shouldn't say those things. Yes, it may glorify Him, but for them to say that is basically saying "Haha, you believers of Christ are so stupid! Look at me, I believe in a God and I shove the Bible down people's throats!" I DO NOT like it one single bit. That is why I use the words like "Oh my gosh.", "Dang it!",  "For Pete's sake!", or "Ah, shoot!" Actually now that I think about it, there are verses in the Bible that tells you NOT to use God's name in vain or stumble a brother/sister in Christ like:

"You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain."
Exodus 20:7

"And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble."
1 Corinthians 8:11-13

It does not upset me, and I don't know whether to feel horrible because of that ...

I'm not a very religious person, myself, so I don't know just
how bad some people think it is. I do know, however, that people exclaiming in anger using the word "Jesus" is taken very seriously by some, so I try my very best not to do it often .

Sometimes, though, it just happens. I wish I could control myself, but sometimes it just slips out. It's just because of bad influences. I know some people would look at this and probably change their opinion of me forever, but I'm simply stating the truth.

In other words, I do not mind it when people do this since I do not really believe that strongly in anything, but I do mind it when they do it in front of people who are offended by it. This is why I rarely do it in public.

Even on my own, I try to avoid it because I feel bad. I respect everyone's opinions and sensitivities and therefore do my best not to exclaim angrily using Jesus's name. I sure wouldn't like it if people used my name in cusses ...

Anyway, my point is, if you would like to yell and swear (as long as everyone present approves) using Jesus's name, I would not mind that much since I'm not very religious, but if you do it when there are people around who take it seriously and are hurt by it, then I would have a problem.

If my constant use of the word "religious" offends any Christians viewing this, I'm very sorry, but I do not know what else to say. Please forgive my ignorance . I read a thread on here recently complaining that Christian people aren't "religious" or something, and I noticed that many people liked it, so I absolutely respect those of you who think so. I use the word "religious" a lot because I am not very knowledgeable about this subject. If it offends any of you, let me know, and I'll change it . Sorry in advance!

In short, I'm cool with anything anyone does as long as it doesn't make anyone else feel uncomfortable.

I respect and love all of you, and all of you are awesome !

Yes, especially if people who claim to be Christians do it. One of my friends lives in a family of people who believe in God, but all of them say His name in vain a lot, which includes my friend. It really bothers me, but I never said anything about it yet because up until recently, I didn't care.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
