If you haven't heard by now, Christians in Iraq are being persecuted and killed by Extremist Muslim group, Islamic State (or ISIS). The media hasn't been covering this a lot, until recently when it is revealed that they were beheading and crucifying children as well as raping women, demanding to either convert, "pay a fine", or die.

The Canon White of Baghdad (which I had the privilege of meeting when he was a commencement speaker at my college) has written a post of the current situation: https://www.facebook.com/apbw2?hc_location=timeline

http://www.christiantoday.com/article/mosul.empty.of.christians.for.the.first.time.in.history/38966.htm

There are things we can do. Of course we need to pray for the protection of those people and the ending of this slaughter, but also there are petitions to the White House and Parliament, as well as sites for you to personally write letters to your politicians about this.

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/67979
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/help-christians-mosul-and-iraq-who-are-part-modern-day-holocaust/S0cLfXZg
https://www.writetothem.com/

Many nations haven't been doing anything about this and it was only recently that President Obama authorized a limited airstrike if needed. People who can spare anything can also give to organizations who are trying to provide aid to those still in Iraq.

In the meantime, if you were not aware of this, now you know. Please let others know and act on these things immediately. The profile picture that I have (and the following) is the symbol that these Muslims use to mark the doors and identify those that are "Nazarene" or Christians. Share this on your social media and let other people know about this.

My husband has been telling em a lot about this and we discussed it with his parents today.  We were quite happy that Obama got them some food and water as well.  They definitely need all the prayer they can get, and I hope more people are willing to act.  Thank you for this information, play.

And there should be no excuse for the government in not being involved now. There is an increase in attention from the media on this, and there are descriptions and pictures of what's happening there. It's heartbreaking.

Ok, first of all, this is just wrong. I think that people should be allowed to believe in what they want to believe, but should not be punished over what they believe in.

Something should be done about this, but the United States should not be the one doing something. This is an issue from another country, and they need to learn to handle it. The United States is in so much debt right now because we help people for free. I mean, it would be totally different if Iraq and the countries affected by this were paying us back, but they are not, at least not to my knowledge.

The United States is in so much debt because we say "We are the nice guys... let's help everybody for free, and screw ourselves over more and more. " I can not agree with this. This is why out country had the unemployment issues, the amount of people not able to take care of themselves. The United States should be worried about taking care of the United States before we worry about taking care of the world.

Yes, something should be done about this religious persecution, but it should not be the United States. It should be handled by the local authorities.

Sure, I might feel different if I were a Christian ( I am agnostic, by the way ), but I am not, and that is how I feel about this issues.

And what does the N stand for in #WeAreN ?

thing1 : There are NO local authorities. There's a reason why they have been pleading for international help.

This is no longer a local issue, but an international and humanitarian one. The UN isn't even doing anything. The US is probably the first country to even do anything about it. It is to the point that we are hearing reports that even if you are not Christian, as long as you are not Muslim, they will slaughter you. That's why I didn't just post a link to a White House petition, but also the UK and international. What's being done by the US is done, and we'll wait if there's more, but other countries need to stop this as well.

This isn't a new group that is doing this. They have been around for a long time, and this is being done in Iraq and in Syria. All of these things should wake up the world that something must be done about this. Enough is enough. Don't wait till they control Baghdad.

N is for Nazarene or what they would call as Christians. The symbol that I post here is the symbol that this group uses to identity homes that are Christians, mark it on the door, and then do what they do.

play4fun : So you are telling me that they do not have any form of government over there in Iraq and Syria? This is what I am talking about: The USA is too nice, so as soon as something happens, they come running to us, begging for free help. Don't get me wrong, something should be done about this, but not at the expense of American Tax Dollars that could go towards Veterans getting the care and benefits they were promised, or homeless people who are starving.

thing1 : The US debt isn't solely linked to the help we provide others. It is inhumane to let people suffer and die for an unjust cause, just sitting by and enjoying the comforts of our freedom. Yes, we are in major debt. If Obama would allow drilling for oil on US soil, we'd stop having to get so much from other countries. That would allow us to start paying back our debts, rather than ignoring our natural resources and buying resources from others. We have a lot of oil fields in the US, some that aren't even tapped into, and Obama is disallowing drilling to extract the oil. Why? It's not good for the environment or some similar reason.

Don't get me started on the plethora of vacations that Obama and his family have taken using taxpayer money, either. He's spent millions and millions, even billions of dollars on vacations. Why isn't he helping the homeless with that money? A million dollars will give a man a job for a long, long time. How much more jobs could billions of dollars produce? If Obama invested into increasing the amount of jobs in the US, stopped choking small businesses, and stopped giving welfare to those who qualified for those new jobs (give jobs to people so they can earn their own money, don't just hand over the money that I worked hard for), America would be better off. 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.' Give a man money, you teach him dependency on the government (which decreases the freedom that vets fought for, and soldiers fight for now, and increases government power). Give a man a job, you teach him to provide for himself and his family in a way that doesn't require the government's good intentions.

Back on topic. I honestly don't know enough about this topic. I knew it was happening, but don't really know much beyond that. My grandparents do though, so I hear bits and pieces. It's quite obvious what is going on. Innocent people are being slaughtered, and people who have the power to help are twiddling their thumbs and aren't helping. I don't care what faith you are, slaughtering people because of their beliefs is wrong. If we aren't going to stop genocide, why even bother with criminals here? It's no different, it's just a different location. People are people, and genocide is never ok.

thing1 : Oh stop thinking about this selfishly. The call for aid is international, not just from the US. Right now, by the words of our president, there is an "absence of Iraqi government" to do any unified stop against the ISIS. The current government over there is so weak that they need help from the Kurdish to help fight the ISIS, when these two groups are in conflict of each other. The US are giving the Kurdish ammunition and supplies to fight against the ISIS as well. Right now, some of these refugees have fled to the mountains, but are trapped there because of the ISIS forces, and the US have been getting them supplies and food for those trapped there airborne, but they are not planning on using ground troops anytime soon, nor is a rescue mission possible for there are thousands stuck on there. If action is not done soon, then the worst case scenario is this group taking control of the entire Iraqi government, making what the US tried to do during the Iraqi war to be for nothing. The president was even "surprised" that they rose up again that quickly since the occupation of Iraq. I hope and don't think that it would get that far, but it shouldn't be at the cost of innocent lives.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/08/09/339111451/obama-iraq-must-have-legitimate-government-to-combat-insurgency

This is not a thread for discussing whether the US needs to take action or not. If it were, I would have just placed this in the debate forum. This thread is a call for Christians to pray to God for aid and to take action to let the government officials of the world to know of this problem. The US don't need to do that much if the world actually does something about it. And this is targeting anyone who is NOT Muslim. It just so happens that the majority there who are not Muslim is Christian. You don't have to be a Christian to do any of the things that I listed on the first post, but if you are not planning on doing anything, just stay out of it, cuz this thread is not for you.

UPDATE: http://abcnews.go.com/International/isis-beating-iraqis-kurds-lacks-heart-ammo/story?id=24907091
This article will probably give a more explanation as to why the current Iraqi government and the Kurdish forces are, on paper, able to stop the ISIS easily, but can't without support.

play4fun : Sorry. I wasn't trying to turn this into a debate. My apologies. I was just merely pointing out the fact that something should be done to help those people, but it should not have to be the US since the US does everything for everybody who come crawling and asking for help is all.

Thank you for creating the awareness.  I've been seeing this on my Facebook page.  Will and have been praying for the persecuted brothers and sisters.  We are so privileged to live in countries where we can still freely worship the Lord.  We have no idea what real persecution is like...

The weird thing about Obama's support is that he gave the the OK for bombings because the terrorists got to close to the embassy... anyone have comments/thoughts on that?

While this is completely wrong, I'm somewhat concerned by the focus. They Have been killing shiaa and other minoritys for weeks, but your focus seems to purely be the more recent Christian suffering.
All sects of the civilians are suffering, and is all wrong.
It's probably for the best that Obama authorised bombing, but those saying theres no excuse not to go in, when are you requesting the USA puts boots down in Somalia, Nigeria, Syria?
Syria has had pictures for years, and that's equally heartbreaking.
But the idea that intervention will fix the problems is whimsical.
This is the result of longstanding issues, it was inevitable. And even if the government wins, it will happen again unless they change.

Syria has had pictures for years, and that's equally heartbreaking.
But the idea that intervention will fix the problems is whimsical.
This is the result of longstanding issues, it was inevitable. And even if the government wins, it will happen again unless they change.

thenumberone : Sorry for taking so long to respond back.

You're right in that they have been doing this for a long time to different groups of people and I have been keeping track and been praying about the situation over there as well. But at the same time, as Christians, we are suppose to really remember our brothers and sisters overseas in places that are being persecuted. Just like in the Early Church when communities have word from other parts of the Roman Empire being persecuted, we are to pray for them as well. That is not to say that we don't care about the Yazidi and the shiaas, but I'm not making this thread as a general thread, but just towards our Christian community.

There are other places that does that but are just not in the mainstream news and people don't talk about them. It is a little interesting that the topic of ISIS is not even mentioned in the news forum, and I wonder if it will now with what they did with Mr. Foley. I'm praying for the family as well.

By paper, I'm a Muslim, and I freaking hate ISIS and their bulls***.

I am tremendously sorry for the swearing, but I do tend to get out of hand when I am angry about things.

I have known about this issue for quite some time now. I live in Lebanon, and I watch the news every single day. I don't get the biased, repetitive Fox News crap which does nothing but waste time, but we don't hear enough of this over here either. I feel really sorry for the Christians in Iraq who are getting killed, and I find it so ridiculously retarded that so many people on this godforsaken planet actually judge people based on their religion instead of the constitution of their character.

Plus, it isn't only the Christians they're slaughtering - a lot of other minor groups have become victims as well. I understand that your main focus is on the Christians, though, as most of you are Christians yourselves, but all of the other little groups being tormented just makes me that much angrier. I will be praying for the safety of both your friends and mine, and that ISIS gets taught a lesson.

Islamic extremists drive me nuts, as well as any other religion taking it to the limit, and I swear I can't wait for the day when everyone just looks at the world clearly and NOT through the screwed-up lens so many people still view it through today. No one of any religion should be discriminated against due to their beliefs, and ISIS needs to realize that what they're doing is downright medieval.

Sorry about the rant, but I HATE ISIS. Hate is a strong word, I know, but I think it fits appropriately in here.

I feel a little bit out of place here, to be honest, with all of the "we Christians" and "our brothers and sisters" floating around in the thread and its replies, but I want you to know that I'm on the logical side - everyone must be free! I'm embarrassed to be called a Muslim just because of these idiots running around, and seeing any religious psycho group causing trouble for people who aren't like them is just disgusting.

I hope your Christian friends, along with everyone else, will be alright as soon as possible. This entire situation, frankly, is just so unbelievably ridiculous that I sometimes question whether I'm dreaming or not.

Now, I would have liked to finish this reply off with something like "#WeAreN!", but I guess that would be lying in my case... *Thinks*. Aha! I've got it!

I support #WeAreN!

Time to click the links. I was about to go for an ice-cream trip with my cousin Green... but that can wait .

Down with ISIS!

Be awesome everyone, and good luck to you all and your friends,
