I would like to start out by saying. Please don't take this question literally or think about the technicality's with it. I read a story with this situation and I thought about it on my way home from work today. ?So the situation is you either go to hell with your soul mate or go to heaven without them. To be honest I have no idea what I would do. But I am curious about everyone else especially a Christians point of view.?

To actually want to go to hell to be with your lover would mean that the lover is the source of meaning in your life. And actually, it's not technically wrong. However, if your lover is a flawed human being like, you know, all of us, they are also equally a flawed source of meaning in your life. So hell with your lover would not be all flowers and rainbows. The relationship would hit its peak and stagnate. Hell would remain hell, albeit not that bad at first.

What we would need is a lover who can love us perfectly as well as complete us so that we too can reciprocate perfect love back. This way, the relationship never peaks and never stagnates. There is love present that literally does not end. The lover with us would be paradise in itself, regardless of placement.

The perfect lover, my friend, is God.

My answer to this problem in life is simple.. I'd take my spot my in heaven and refuse to go to hell. 

Now before you think I'm sort of super mean person (wait most people think that already) Let me explain why I would do this.

If this person was truly the love of my life and it would remain that way, Then going to hell would be a stupid idea. I mean I always assume hell is a place where your worst nightmares are turned into reality.. If I really loved this person and they loved me, The chances of us coming across one another to show that love would be 0.. Surely the most devilish punishment would be to never see your true love again...

So it's basically a case of... Not seeing the person you love ever again or, Not seeing the person you love ever again and being tortured mentally and physically in hell lol..

this is a good question that makes people think about their morals...If people are willing to put aside what they believe in

Ummm again.... This question wasn't made to be taken technically. For the fact that there are so many what if's and why no'ts. See I don't know what I would do simply because I would feel very selfish if I just choose to go to heaven because what makes me any better than anyone else. But  I would probably have to agree with Muffin on all of this. Hell is hell and we wouldn't see each other so why should we both be miserable.

Marriage is not only good for it's consequences, but it is also good in and of itself.

Finally, if you take my strange philosophy on death, you no longer exist. If you die, your spouse cannot be married to you because you are not. Therefore, "to death do you part" is just a statement of fact, not the loophole to get out of the contract.

Because I know I have already met my soul mate, this question is very easy for me. I will go to hell with my soul mate. I love my girl so much, and if she goes to hell, I couldn't live without her. Hell might be aweful, but with her, it would all be good. A life of hell with my soul mate is better than a life in heaven without her.

Yes, I would give up my spot in Heaven to be with my soul mate in a heartbeat. I can't imagine that I would be happy in Heaven if I was alone.

I can't imagine that any TRUE Christian would choose hell for any reason.  Choosing hell would mean that you put your loved one above God, and therefore, you weren't a true Christian at heart anyways.  I'm not saying this to offend anyone... but most people use the word "Christian" without any true commitment to what it means. Just because you believe in God and being good, does not make you a Christian.  To be a true Christian means to devote your life to God and place Him above all others.  If you think you'd be happier in hell with your spouse, you couldn't be further from the truth.  (Let's forget that relationships dissolve after death.)  See sonic's post for an excellent reminder.

I hardly ever reply to threads that's older than a month, but since I've been "out of it" lately I see there's some catching up to do so I'll humor you  

Since you are referring to a love in this world, in this time, my answer is simply, no.  I'm going to throw this around a bit.  The "love of your life" can be anything.  It doesn't have to be a person.  It's easy to determine that.  What's that "thing" in your life that you spend the most time with? That you can't wait getting to?  Is it your video games?  Then that's the love of your life.  Is it movies?  Then that's the love of your life.  Is it food?  Then that's the love of your life.  I think you get the picture.  Some of us have a steady boyfriend / girlfriend or a husband / wife, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are your love in this life  .  I know it seems...cruel (for the lack of a better word) but if you're honest with yourself some and I exclaim, some of you will nod your head in agreement.  I know you said we shouldn't get "technical" about it, but for a true Christian, the answer should be easy and straight forward.  Jesus said in Matthew 18:37-39 - “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.  Whoever does not take up their cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.  Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it."

Everybody has a picture of heaven in their minds, but we, with our limited minds, will never, ever comprehend the full glory of heaven.  If you can think of the most beautiful place in this world, or that your mind can conjure up or the most awesome experience you've had with whatever and times that with a Brazillion (see what I did there ) you still won't come close.  1 Corinthians 2:7-8, "No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.  None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.  However, as it is written:  “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him"

SoL@R :  You know what I thought about, interestingly enough, as I read this post?  (And I'm sure this is the point you were trying to ultimately make, but it might not have been obvious to everyone.)

This question is rather moot for true Christians.  The love of our life should be Christ, above all.  And Christ being the love of our life, we'd never have to give Him up when we enter those pearly gates.  

I guess, therefore, it certainly is important to specify a worldly soulmate/ love of your life when considering this question.  Of course, my answer hasn't changed, though.
