I think the best Sonic character is Sonic himself. With the possibly exception of Knuckles, I don't think any of the other characters quite reach Sonic's level of awesome.

Tails will always be the coolest one, to me. Having two tails and using them to fly is pretty sweet. And he's a fox, and we don't have very many hero foxes besides Sly Cooper.

Aw, kicking out the villains already? I was going to go with Shadow because he is just plain awesome, but ah. If he is not in, I will probably have to go with Espio. Espio is the purple chameleon ninja warrior, in case you did not know. I feel like he is awesome. It was also really fun to play as him and the rest of the Chaotix team in Sonic Heroes. I never really liked the other teams all that much.
