Give a tale about overtime.

After doing 60 hours this week I am beginning to wonder why on earth does the rent have to be astronomical.
If a person is never home?
What is the point?
I caught a clip from a movie depicting economy size motels in the movie "Gung Ho" (1980's flick. Cars. Keaton. Japan and U.S.A.)
It got me thinking that there should be a type of living system for the workaholic that is cheap and not extreme on the shabby side.

Any other posts on the subject would be great.
School entries can only be counted if the person has a part time job too.

Good Luck.
Peace.

You know, I've actually thought the same thing about rent, funnily enough.  Especially when I was at college full time and working six part time jobs... I had to ask myself:  Why am I paying so much for a place I spend maybe 5 hours in every day?  It'd be pretty awesome if there were places like you mention.... A little box of space that's cheap and has the basic amenities.  I mean, I basically feel like that's all my house is for sometimes: storage.

All of this being said, I think teachers have the most rotten deal of all. They don't get paid for their overtime, and pretty much EVERY waking moment outside of work hours.... is still work.  (Talking about teachers that do the job right, I mean.)  Sometimes it gets so bad that I just have to push other things aside and FORCE myself to make time for myself... like I have these past two days.  Otherwise, I think all true teachers would spontaneously combust.

Well, my take on overtime is a little different than most because I am a writer and quite frankly I would love it if I were getting paid on the clock, or getting paid period. One of the most frustrating things about being a writer is that you may not know if you’re going to get paid for your work. This does not however, factor in all the time, hours, and effort that writers put into their work.

Personally I hope to one day be writing for company that will pay me an hourly wage. I do sympathize with you though because during most weeks I put in a lot of hours either preparing material and/or doing research material. I don’t really keep count, but I would be willing to say that on most weeks, I probably put in close to 25-30 hours if not more between the writing and actually covering events. Some weeks are busier than others, but as a Boxing writer I have been known to cover as many as six cards in a 48 hour period regardless of differences in time between what goes on internationally and the United States, or having access to cards via traditional means. It can be and often is exhausting, but I do enjoy it despite still paying my dues.

Hopefully, one day I will be able to make an hourly wage. It certainly would justify my dedication and effort. Gung Ho is one of my favorite movies and I do agree with you.

So we're both giving an overtime story and talking economics?

I've done overtime before.  I live in a system where 40 hours is a week of work.  I work in a position that has commission plus base salary and I don't have 'overtime.'  I just work until I hit my sales goals.  It's always time to work and provide for my family and I budget my time accordingly. Hourly is tough to do and I'm glad I'm out of that.  I can get work done and finish and only go for 20 hours a week.  Or if I'm struggling, it's more like 60 hours a week.  It simply depends.

As for rent, you're paying for space whether someone uses it or not.  The commodity of time doesn't matter to a landlord.  You can find a place you can bunk with another person who has a different shift.  I shared a tiny unit with a guy who worked nights while I worked days.  We never saw each other and we both cleaned up after ourselves.  It worked perfect and it was cheap because we split rent, water, utilities, and so on.

I used to do residential/commercial heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration. I would work 10-14 hour days Monday-Saturday in the summertime with on-call every other week. During the day, I never knew what breakdown or installation fiasco that I would encounter at the next job that I would arrive at. Sometimes I would think I was doing great at keeping up with the work orders near the end of the day only to encounter a 3 hour repair at the final job.

The on-call weeks were a nightmare. Not only did I have to contend with the possibility of an 8-14 hour work DAY, as soon as the secretaries left our offices at 5:00 I would start getting after hours calls. Some nights there would be 1-2, other nights I might get 6+. The really horrible part was I began to dread hearing my cell phone ring. I couldn't really go anywhere with my family. For example, we might get to the grocery store and 20 minutes in I would already have 3 after hours call waiting for me. Also, there was also times when I would put in 18 hours, get home, eat something and crawl into bed only to have the phone ring again. Most times I had to get dressed and leave again. Then there were the people that called between 3:00AM-6:00AM.

The most hour I worked in one week was 82 and it was physical labor too. Climbing ladders and hauling equipment while getting scorched by the sun. I'm not ashamed to admit I broke under the stress of it all.

Rent is frustrating but I've come to associate it with something that was said in the movie
In Time. "For a few to be immortal, many must die."
My version is - For a few to be wealthy, many must be poor. Is high rent really necessary or is there someone "at the top" that needs a second yacht? It's the same with wages. Are low wages really necessary or...does Muffy need a 20Mil diamond engagement ring?

"Whatever you say boss but that guy behind the counter better make sure it shows on my pay this time, you hear?"

Well you get what you pay for and end up with you paid for too.

Well, my overtime story has kind of changed. My husband started a new job recently, and his shifts are basically anywhere from 8-12 hours, with no advance notice.  However, his job is also a 20-40 minute drive from me depending on the traffic.  What does this mean?  If he works a 12 hour shift, and he hits the worst traffic there and back.... I'm basically away from the house for about 13.5 hours.

I feel a bit conflicted about this.  On one hand, I actually get a lot done in those super early and super late hours at the school. I'm practically the only one there, and I don't have the distractions of my husband and the TV.  I also can't be tempted into playing games because they aren't allowed at the school.  (In fact, I'm surprised vizzed hasn't been blocked yet.)

On the flip side... well... I'm getting home at 6 or 7pm every day.  Then I'm going to bed at 10pm.  Only to wake up at 5am, pack, shower, and leave around 5:30am.  In essence, I'm spending THREE hours at the house.  Only three.  1.5 hours of that is spent doing my workouts and showering, since I'm trying to pick back up on those.  The other 1.5 are spent eating, helping kids through email, doing laundry for the next day, preparing meals for the night and the next day, or doing a small bit of relaxing.  Vizzed is SUPER slow on my work computers, so anything I want to do on vizzed that takes time... I also have to do in that 1.5 hours spent at home not exercising.

In addition to this, my husband does no cleaning of the house anyways, and is ... well... quite a slob.  The house was already neglected, and now I can't even imagine how much more neglected it's gonna be.

So I really do feel conflicted. Nice to be able to do more because of the lack of temptation or distractions.... but bummed for the simple sake that I can't do anything at home really... PLUS I have nothing to do during my free time at work

He only started this week, but still... it will be interesting to see how things go.  It just makes me want to stay up late even more often than I did in the past, which is far too often.  LOL

Thank you everybody for posting in this thread.
I was not sure anyone would post.

Those of us that currently work a ton of overtime tend to try and conserve callories to sleep or drive.

When I do a do an 8-hour shift I ask for the heavy loads and get a good work out and look great.

When I do 9, 10, 11, ... 14 hour days?
Way different results.

I look my age.

The babes around town don't notice. (I think they are being kind.)
But still.

The pad gets an influx of useless garbage. Or fast food wrappers that I hate seeing.

Getting anything done is a chore.
Then when everything in my life is "copasetic"?
My time to myself ends and I start the process all over again.

I would not mind If I were wearing boots and stripes.
For this?
Everyday life?
This is "bull". (Translation = Nonsense.)
In the 1950's One man could provide the house, car, groceries, random bills and put the kids through college.
Today?
Both man and wife have to work to even cover rent.
I just thought a little observation like this is needed for today.

Keep the stories coming. They are the best reads in this site.
Thank you.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

Oh man, I totally feel ya and agree with you.  I mean, I work as a professional with a master's degree and my husband does well enough with his high school education (better than most).  Despite both incomes, we struggle to get by and actually save as well.  Now that I'm spending 12ish hours at the school every day, it's hard to get anything done around the house.  Cleaning, cooking, and exercising are all habits I'm beginning to see less of, and his new routine has only been in affect for two weeks now.

I can't imagine doing it for years.... not as a married couple anyways. I imagine that being single, it'd be easier since you're only looking out for yourself. Not that it makes the situation MUCH better, but perhaps it would be slightly improved?  I don't even want to think of the struggle of being parents in the same situation!

Yeah it's definitely frustrating. I get the landlord's side that you're not only paying for a place to live, but also a place to store all your stuff, whether you're there or not. I'm used to working 70-80 work weeks with 12 to 24 hour hospital shifts where I may end up just sleeping at the hospital so paying for an apartment while only using the place 5 or 6 times a week is frustrating. I went with a studio apartment since I'm barely there to make it more affordable, but yeah it sucks.

Ugh, I'm so done with overtime. I was in the Army and that is all overtime without the pay. Granted, most days you only work from 9 to 4:30, and you even have an hour and a half lunch. But you also have to be at work at 6 AM for PT, then there's an hour and a half for breakfast, all that time for lunch, and anything that runs after 4:30 still had to get done, and everyone had to wait even if it was one guy finishing and there was nothing anybody could do to help. in the end, even though I didn't work that many hours, I was out of the house for 11 or 13 hours every day of the week, and it was miserable. I was lucky, because I lived pretty close to where I worked, so I could come home for lunch and breakfast most days, but a lot of guys I know didn't have that option.

Then when I got out of that mess, I started delivering mail, and that was a whole new can of worms. Although the work was extremely easy, it was 10 hour days six days a week. In the sun. Granted, people have had it worse, but when I get home I want to do more than sit on the couch for an hour then shower and go to bed.

Life sucks man.

Respect for the working person can be a pain.
But.
Please folks.
Bills are no joke.
Same goes for the troubles we go through to get them paid.
"Signifying nothing".
Good Luck To All.

It really depends on your money situation you're having, when I used to have a job (before I quit) I have to work overtime because I nether requested me to or my manager tells me to work during my time off, sometimes it's at a time I really like to have overtime, but other times, it's a really bad time and that get's me a little frustrated, so it really depends on what's happening mostly.
