How come if something bad happens to a black person, it is automatically considered racism? Here's an example:

This happened about 6 months ago. I was working at a school. I was in the computer lab. There was also an 8th grade class in there. They were making a lot of noise and messing around a lot, but I didn't mind. They were messing around with this one kid and they changed his desktop background to a picture of a guy popping his eyes out. The guy in the picture was black, but neither me or the kids really paid any attention to it. There was another teacher in there who saw it and flipped out. She told this whole speech about how there are kids of different races in this school and how racial discrimination is not acceptable. When she was done I looked at her, amazed by her stupidity, and said "It has nothing to do with skin color. Neither I, nor the kids, even paid attention to the skin color. It is just a picture of a guy popping out his eyes. It is not racism in any way. You assuming that it was about his skin color makes YOU the racist one. If it was a white guy would it be a problem? Didn't think so." Yeah that shut her up.

I've thought about this a lot. I don't think any single incident can be used to show if someone is or isn't racist. Taking one incident doesn't prove anything to me.

I do get tired of hearing about race on the news. The assumption that something was racially motivated happens almost instantly if the people involved are of different races. It is getting really old.

That was an awesome reply to her.

In general, I find people in their 30s and 40s are a lot more "anti-racist trigger happy" than younger people. But that's because they grew up in when the media had a lot of focus on black rights, and equality and the like. You'll see, this current generation will be the same but with homosexuality, it seems like they think everything has a  homophobic connotation.

People focus to hard on something that is backfires, this happens all the time.

Race has rightfully never been an important thing to me. If someone is black, and a joke based on stereotype is made, I will laugh, treating it as a joke, not so much a racist joke. White humans don't seem to take offense to such, so why should the black ones?

Light Knight : I am a guy. Did my Eevee picture throw you off?
EDIT: Ignore this. I now realize that you were talking about my reply to the teacher, not geeogree's reply to me. Sorry!

tgags123 : Indeed, that is what I meant. I would love to have been there when you said it and seen her reaction.

Everything is racist, or sexist, or homophobic, or politically incorrect in some way; people are brainwashed to look for it in everything, instead of just treating all people normally.

to be honest I think that looking for it all the time is just counter productive. many of my friends arent even originally from my country, and we regularly throw cliché racial statements at each other because its so ridiculous that it is funny. I know a lot of people wont understand that but context is everything. when you can laugh about race everyone is more relaxed and its not an issue.
when people tiptoe around and yell racism if you so much refer to someone as a black guy, thats when society gets tense and cracks appear.
putting a picture of a black guy up isnt racist, and even if you had put a racist picture up, if it was your friend and he didnt mind those kinds of jokes I wouldnt think its the teachers business. id be impressed that neither side actualy took race seriously, its insignificant yet we make it out to be something huge, that only aids the idea we are really different, no matter which side you support.

Well, considering the history that African Americans had, racism could still be (and probably is) a very sensitive topic for those who have been affected in any sort of way.
Of course, there are many parts of humor that include race, religion, gender, etc...many being light-hearted and understandable to jokes that are downright offensive.
Take 9/11 for example. Obviously, the perpetrators of the plane crash were from the Middle East. Many victims that survived look upon other people from the Middle East as terrorists, even though the perpetrators were radicalists. Not everyone from the Middle East is gonna be part of that group.
There seem to be a lot of stereotypes that have been cultivated into this generation without much thought to why it's wrong, like Asians are super smart - no, not really. Many are, but not every single Asian. You see Family Guy making lots of Jewish jokes, and it's really for laughs. It just comes down to how sensitive you are to what you are...if you are Jewish and don't like your culture being made fun of, then hey, call Family Guy racist. If you are Jewish but don't mind, then hey, keep watching it.

Sidewinder : While I agree with some of your points, I disagree with the first part. First, how come "African American" is the politically correct term? I know a lot of "African Americans" that aren't from Africa, nor do they descend from Africa. Most prefer to be called black people. Also, it isn't the black people that are blowing it out of proportion. It's the white people. The white people are extremely over sensitive when it comes to black people and racism.

It's because they are those Politically Correct nut jobs that over sensitise everything. Thanks to current propaganda and the pushing "sensitivity" down everyone's throats, people overanalyzes everything that goes on to see if it's in their eyes "racist, homophobic, or offensive". The term "African American" is racist within itself, throwing all black people into that title. Although I know actual African Americans who immigrated from Kenya, they are pretty nice actually.

That is just called jumping to an early conclusion. A few people just assume people are laughing at the skin. I would only make a guess of racism if the words Monkey or Chicken were involved. I would not go on about it but I would just question it, making a speech about it is just pushing it.
What I am concerned about is when Black people claim racism on others that are not black. For instance the is a kid from Nigeria that goes to my school and everyone finds him annoying, and when people say he is annoying he says it is racist! He also goes about calling people racist if you insult him (in non racist ways) and if he does not get his way. One time he asked me for an answer to a question, I refused and you guessed it, he claimed I was being racist. In this incident we were both pulled out the room to discuss because the teacher thought I was actually offending him racially. Eventually it came to the conclusion that Seyifunmi (that is his name) made an inappropriate claim and he got an hour after school detention for it.

Its because every one's to oversensitive to everything
Especially white people
Growing up in a mixed race community you realise every ones racist but white people its kinda weird, I don't like people on a personal level not a race level
I think people need to remember White people are the minority on this earth, you may not believe it but its true.

Yeah, i hate how if any thing that happens 2 a black person is racist when if the same thing has happened or were 2 happen 2 a white person it wouldn't be racist. I think that some things are racist when most things aren't racist. If people only paid attention 2 the things that was actually racist and not little things then this world would be a little better. A good example is if white guys had an all white basketball team they would be called racist and red necks. But look at the harlem globetrotters.  They had a all black people team for how many years? Nobody said a single thing about that. So much bad stuff is happening in the world and stupid people always want 2 make a big deal out of literally nothing. I also hate how if a white person says something racist towards a black person when he is angry or just in general he is racist but if a black person says something that is racist 2 a white person nobody says a thing.

I have had a black guy call me a racist just because I didnt have any cigarettes to give him. If you use the racist card too much, it will turn against you. And there are some pretty racist black folk around here too, but luckily not all of them. Here in northern europe the black folk who are here came on their own free will to escape some of the bloodiest wars in Africa, but they chose to come and we gave them a home. Most who have been living next door to me or in my neighbourhood have been nice and friendly folk. But it is a fact that there is always some ignorant and mean folk in every bunch.

Surprised she didn't get you in trouble for that. But yes, I feel rather the same way. I'm white, but I'm a first-generation American; my parents are from Romania. Result? I got called a gypsy quite a few times, even though I clearly am not. I don't really care.

What I don't understand is why the blacks can call themselves the n-word, but if a white says it, it's immediately deemed racist. I'd love it if they didn't call me a "cracker." So far, no one has, but I've read comments on the Internet meant for other whites. I'd probably scream at whoever did that until he runs to his mommy.

I don't care much for differences in race, honestly. I know plenty of black kids that I love like brothers, and Asian and Hispanic kids as well. My only problem is how much perceived acts of racism are blown out of proportion for the media. The other night, actually, I was talking with my mom about college scholarships, and I told her, "My teacher mentioned one for first-generation Americans. Don't you think I could qualify for it?" But she pointed out it was probably built for Hispanic students. This leads to "affirmative action," which I hate because nearly nobody alive has suffered under too much racial discrimination such as slavery- with the exception of the people still alive from the Civil Rights Movement, but they're really old- and it's not like any white person has owned a slave in more than a hundred years. What is the point of affirmative action if the recipients haven't been wronged, or the people who did something are all long gone, so why keep it around?

I mean, honestly. We're all people. Who cares about skin color?

Quite a few people, it seems, and not just whites.

Gypsies were mentioned. It is funny how they are in popular culture portrayed as free spirited nomads without a care in the world but the local gypsies I know of are the most conservative people I can think of. They basically live and dress like world would had not change in a hundered years or so and have more rules after rules you can imagine.

And in their culture the concept of blood feud is very strong. If your uncles cousin stabbed your mothers mothers second cousin in the sixties, you might still get shot even though you was born 30 years later. Just for being in a wrong place at the same time with the feuding family. And yes, this has happened.

I kind of agree with all of you, I always used to see things like this back in high school. Never saw it in college yet though.

Honestly now I don't see what's the big deal in race. Besides all human skin color is the same... melanin. Lets take a little human anatomy lesson shall we? The skin is full of the pigment Melanin, granted some people have more melanin in the skin than others causing some peoples skin to be darker than others. Melanin is a pigment in the skin that blocks UV rays and is produced when your skin is exposed to a lot of sun, hence why when you go into the sun for a while and you go inside your skin is darker.

Now what does this have to do with racial issues? It proves that racial issues are idiotic, stupid, and quite frankly senseless. Since we are all considered the same color/pigment are there really races? While yes there are different countries religions etc that shouldn't really matter in today's day and age considering how mixed most people are but judging upon someone's skin color? That person is probably low minded refuses to change and/or has no common sense. And don't give me that story that says "Well they grew up like that!" I had a teacher who grew up in the 60's and they are not racist at all. In fact they are far from it.  Racism is simply idiotic and is a way for people to divide each other apart merely because someone looks different from everyone else.

Besides, wasn't that what World War II was about? Trying to find the "ultimate race?" If World War II was so bad why are we repeating the same things as they did? Shouldn't we be accepting these "races" more instead of denying them since people are so intent in believing they exist?
