Obesity is a massive problem in industrialized countries around the world.  The U.S. is always hearing about obesity and it's problems.

What is a solution to fight it?  More gym time in schools?  No bad foods allowed?  What would you do?

mister sandman : I agree with you 100%. Hamburgers are $0.99, but salads are like $6. I also think that reducing the portion sizes is stupid. I know kids that come home from school starving because instead of having healthier food, the school reduced the portion sizes.

So many different ideas! You could price fast food higher, make gym time longer in school, and optional fasting at least 30 days a year! Maybe, if you have proof of your fasting, you could get some benefit or something. I don't know.

You constantly see commercials about major fast food companies with new foods on their dollar menus...the big problem is that fast food is cheap, and is, well, fast. Many many people are either middle class or living in poverty, and cannot afford to buy healthy organic foods all the time, so to stop their hunger, they go for the considerably best option on the table, cheap fast food.
Maybe increasing the prices at fast food restaurants may help just a little, not only combating obesity, but also the government is getting a little revenue from this.

I was following a study that has been going on. In rats, they targeted the gene that takes in excess food and stores it as fat. The important part of this study is that they figured out how to turn off that gene. So basically, no matter how much the rat ate, it wouldn't gain wait. As of now, it appears that once the body has all the nutrients it needs, it simply doesn't absorb anymore. Anything more that is eaten is simply digested, un-absorbed, and completely passed as waste. I say 'as of now' because this is still being observed. For now, there don't appear to be any noticeable negative effects. The rats eat until they feel full, so it isn't like they constantly eat. They don't appear to be malnourished. But again, it is only beginning phase of this particular step.

Pretty cool idea if it could be integrated for humans WAY down the line. This probably wouldn't be the best idea. People doing this would just see this as a way to eat whatever they want with no worry of gaining weight. While that could be true, it doesn't change the fact that you need the right nutrition to be healthy. I can see people ignoring that and just eating junk because it doesn't make them obese anymore. Very slippery slope. Besides. Imagine your stomach is stretched so it is used to eating massive amounts of food. Now imagine you eat that huge meal only absorb the amount your body needs. Imagine having to pass ALL that excess food. You could block your intestines, possibly bursting them or causing a massive bacterial infection. Ack.

I believe it's important to start at the beginning. Children and teens should be influenced to develop healthier habits. I think our idea of Gym class isn't the greatest (it can be very humiliating for some), and more of our curriculum throughout all of school should be geared towards being active and eating well.

This paired with better parental education, higher taxes on unhealthy foods and lower ones on healthy food, cheaper/better/different gyms, and more government supported health events and classes, would make a big difference.

we should combat obesity by teaching 'adults' how to raise their children in terms of what they feed theur children. by teaching the adukts, you in turn eliminate any responsibility that may ktherwise fall in the child's lap. whether this is good lr bad- i'm nkt sure. but if adukts are willing to gake a simple course or attend a seminar, they can better understand what and what nit to allow their children to consume.

warmaker : I would probably ban food that has tons of grams of sugar. It's a major reason because of the population of obesity. It even spreads! If a parent is obese, there's a 50% chance that the parent's child will become obese. However, if both of the parents are fat, then it increases to 89%

This is mostly a problem in America because of the majority of fast food. McDonalds really should be banned. The calories in thier food are unreal!

I don't think we, as a whole, need to combat obesity. I believe that it is everyone's responsibility to control their own weight.

Unfortunately, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. I only lost weight because I decided to. No government program/ community events/ parental guidance will help if the people don't want it themselves. That being said, encouraging healthy lifestyles is important, and should be stressed from a young age, as some have pointed out.

By getting off our fat lazy asses. Hell, you don't even have to eat healthy. You can eat crap food all day, but as long as you eat fewer calories than you need per day, you can still lose weight. Obesity is apparently a disease now too, just giving fat lazy people a better reason to stay that way.
