Pick a Jackie Chan Film and Talk about it.
It can be your favourite.
Your Least Favourite.
The funniest.
Or
One that is being made.
I love Jackie Chan movies for several reasons.
I rarely hear of a person that does not like his films.

One I am going to see soon is the "Chinese Zodiac".
Trailer is below...

My favorite Jackie Chan movie by far is the original "Rush Hour" with Chris Tucker. Second favorite would be "Rumble in the Bronx."

What I enjoyed most ( in Rush Hour) was the immense action from beginning to end! There was hardly a dull or unmemorable moment! To me, that's excellent makings of a great movie....which is why I own all 3, but neither 2 or 3 compares to the original! The dialogue and comedy is witty as well. Very funny movie, I recommend it.

I typically like all of his movies...except the few super cheesy and predictable ones.

@Orion - I watched the trailer to Chinese Zodoiac...it certainly looks promising, lots of fighting and action! Thanks for sharing!

orionfoxgibson : Well one of my favorite films of Jackie Chan is Rumble in the Bronx. It is underrated among his films I feel, although the movie was quite humorous there was also some great fighting scenes and stunts. Chan I think broke his ankle during the filming of the movie performing one of those death defying stunts.

This was really before they really started using special effects and different sorts of technology in stunts and such so it’s really a testament to how good Chan is at what he does. It was also good to see some footage at the end of the movie of the stunt work and some of the stunts that went wrong. It shows people how dangerous stunt work can be and that it isn’t something to take lightly.

I’m also a fan of the Rush Hour series.

bvd1022 :
"Rumble in the Bronx" is what got him world renown fame. And Respect.
He did several features and was always a big star in Hong Kong.
But in America? They always asked him to do very small parts. "Cannonball Run" cameo, Cop#4 in "The Protector." (Even he questioned it. "Why do they fly me all the way from Hong Kong To L.A. to play an extra or do just a cameo?")

My favourites are "Who am I" (His real life instructor died before filming. So some of the intense emotions he displayed in that film feel very real. Even if the plot and show is supposed to be light.)
Another is the "Police Story" Movies 1-5.
"Drunken Master" 1 and 2.
Then of course my number one favourite has to be "The Myth".

Anyway after "Rumble in the Bronx" America then decided to get take Hong Kong Seriously. They did a little bit before with "John Woo" and his films but After Rumble in the Bronx? There was a huge Hong Kong craving in american movies. John Woo makes a few more U.S. movies. Jet Li gets cast in a ton of American Films. The list goes on and on.

If you read his Biography or Autobiography (I forget witch word to use.) There is a ton of fun information that your history teacher can never tell you but will be proud if you grace it.
The title is "I am Jackie Chan. My Life In Action."
Great stuff.
The dude is the same age as my parents. Almost on the day with one.
Good Luck. And Good Chat.

Good Luck To All.

orionfoxgibson : I agree. I have seen some of his Hong Kong work and he should have gotten a lot more recognition before Rumble in the Bronx. In regard to playing smaller roles a little known fact is he was originally offered the role of the assassin in Lethal Weapon 4 before Jet Li but declined because he didn’t want to play a bad guy.

Some people may criticize Chan for turning down what may have been big roles but I personally applaud his convictions and I think it is something that he should be commended for.

Hey there! .. ! How are you? Great? OKAY!

Hmm .. Interesting question as I love Jackie Chan and his work very much. I have two favourite movies by him, both everyone knows very well, The Karate Kid (2010) and the Rush Hour trilogy. Both movies are incredibly action-packed, thrilling and sometimes quite hilarious especially in Rush Hour - Chris Tucker is unbelievable hilarious. But, I like The Karate Kid a lot more because you learn a lot more from him in that movie, his heritage and his life. So my favourite movie is The Karate Kid!

What's yours?

bvd1022 :
Some of the factors that influenced the decision that Chan made on the role in Lethal Weapon 4? (Why he turned it down.)
Was wise decision making. He did a villain once and it did not work out. There may be something of a superstition going on. Like trying to keep his movies money making hits. Because he never played a villain since.
For me? If there was a few million dollars at stake? I think I would entertain superstition too.
There are also other details why as indicated in the book but I have not read the thing in years. Thanks for reminding me though.
I might look up those chapters again. Loads of good stuff. There is even mention of gangsters in there.
Good Luck.
Peace.

orionfoxgibson : Personally I can’t say that I blame him. It’s a lot like when a pro wrestler makes so much money playing the babyface (Good guy) and tries turning heel (Bad guy) in an attempt to stay fresh and not become stale and it doesn’t get over with the audience. Some guys can make the switch either way and do very well but those guys are few and far between.

I think in terms of movies Jackie Chan fits in that category because of not only his talent and athletic ability but for his comedic talents as well. It’s hard once one finds a successful formula to change and adapt even when in his case he would be joining one of the most successful cinema franchises in history. I don’t think he saw the long term value in being a villain just to be killed off in one film. Where in contrast Gary Busey was brilliant in his role in the first installment of the series as one of the key protagonists. The fighting scene toward the end of that movie was also very ground breaking as it was choreographed by the Gracie family, pioneers of Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and a key in bringing the sport of Mixed Martial Arts to the United States. Lethal Weapon remains one of my favorite all time series of movies but I do have my doubts as to how realistic any fight scenes between Jackie Chan and Mel Gibson would be.

Movies or not Chan is athletically on another level and unless they really dubbed it up with special effects I don’t think Gibson could keep up with him. One of the things that made the final fight scene in the first film so legendary is that Gibson and Busey were believable. I think any special effects would actually hurt Chan under those circumstances. Jet Li did a great job in the film and really put Gibson and Danny Glover over in the final fight scene but I don’t think it would have gotten over any other way than the way they did it.

There have been rumors of a fifth installment of the series but as a writer I don’t know how they could keep the action realistic given the advanced age of Gibson and Glover. It’s just one writer’s opinion.

bvd1022 :
Jet Li could take the both of them on his worst day, sick, and lacking a proper amount of air to breathe. Particularly during the time that this film was made.
Jet Li just came in and did a job. (Personal Opinion folks. Deal with it.)
He was a "Hong Kong star."
Not an American Star.
Keep in mind that Action films made in America at that time were films made due to the British Lease Ending. (Ending in Hong Kong.)
These Stars had no Idea what would happen to their career or pay-checks at the time.
Would you tolerate giving a room away to a soldier and tucking your kid in yours because the government demanded it?
These guys had no clue what the changes in Hong Kong would mean to their lives or abilty to bring food to the table.
What would you do? Play a movie that fails your status? or Play a movie that keeps you in the audiences mind and eye? Both are a gamble.
Both made the right choice in my mind.
Chan moved his family to "Australia". Then let things play out.
Jet Li? I have no real details but he stayed "up-close-and-personal" with the British end of cinema. Plus he made about ten movies in America in a very short time period. Then waded in china's cinema every now and again. Making movies like "Hero" and such. Going to where the work that rewarded him the most was.
Options vs Obligation is apart of each person of this culture.
Try to keep that in mind with your calculations and assessments.
Good Luck.

Good Luck To All.

orionfoxgibson : Yes you are correct in describing the differences between Hong Kong and America in regard to films and other things. Another one of my favorite martial arts movies was the original Bloodsport with Jean-Claude Van Damme playing martial arts legend Frank Dux.

A lot of people question the authenticity of the film but there are plenty of underground fight tournaments that take place all over the world. Obviously some things were made more sensational in that movie than they probably were when Dux was competing but that’s just the difference between reality and cinema. I don’t blame Chan or Li for coming over to the United States. Now of days if you’re an actor you can pretty much work where ever you wish and have the potential to make money. Much like thanks to technology writers now can work from anywhere. I’ve been a writer for most of my life I speak from experience.

In regard to the topic we have been discussing since I was the one who brought Jet Li into the conversation, one of my favorite movies of Li’s is War. In addition to great action in that film it also had a great twist in the story that I didn’t see coming until the very end of the movie. As a writer it was refreshing to see an action film that had a good plot twist that wasn’t so predictable. Just one man’s opinion.

bvd1022 :
Honestly?
Plot twists are easy to pull off on paper.
The hard part is when a director or editor do something that ruins it. (May not ruin the film or story but really kills allot of good stuff.)
Take the legend of zelda for example (this is a game site right?).
I could put plot twists all over that thing.

Link is related to a demon thus why the monsters can not kill him.
Dark Link is the ghost of Links Dad.
"OOoooh. Ahhhh". (Que the twilight zone music.)

Link turns into a "pimp" and sells the entire female cast at the end of the game. $20.00 bucks gets you a "lapdance".
"Earn those Rupies Girl."

I love a good unpredictable plot twist. But that is not what I look for in Jackie Chan Films.
Normally I need something that is as close to a Saturday Morning Cartoon. Jackie Chan does just that. Plus .. even if I do not like the show more than a one time sitting? I know that the money he makes off of my purchase goes to some good charities. I get a show and maybe the world gets a little better.

Besides that?
I dig his training regiment and physique. Little chance of "roids" getting discovered there.
Even if he did decide to "Juice up"? He probably would not go over the top unreal.
I like the honesty he has with his audience.
I can not tell you how many work-outs I have seen in magazines that are fake.
Everytime they mention an actor? Stop reading. That crap will not get anyone looking good.

Good Talk. Good Times. Thanks.
Good Luck.
Peace.
bvd1022 :

I like a lot of Jackie Chan movies, but a few
that I would consider his classics are
Drunken Master and Supercop. I just love
that old school American dubbed voices
they use. Funny, entertaining, and good
kung-fu. Can't beat that potion.

TimothyDrake :
"Drunken Master 2", and "Police Story 3". (Names were always messed around with even the Bruce Lee Flicks had Odd names. There were only five of those.)
I love those movies.

(Drunken Master 2? The one with the Steel Mill and His Body Gaurd was cast as a foe.)
(Police Story 3? The one with the "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" actress.)

One of my favourite eras of Jackie Chan Flicks.
The 1990's had a lot of fun stuff in them.

Wish I could remember What Injuries he got in those flicks. (After I discovered the head wound he got in "Armour of god"? I almost cringe every time he takes an accidental hit like a man. Well, not really. But if I were a proper dude I might.)
Good Times and Good Talk. Thanks.
Good Luck.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

orionfoxgibson : As a writer I agree with you in regard to directors and editors. It is one reason why if I haven’t seen a movie that is being broadcast on basic cable or broadcast television for the first time, I refuse to watch it. I rather watch an unedited version of a film because it’s bad enough when you watch a movie that sometimes you can see things coming and there doesn’t seem to be a twist, this is especially annoying in my opinion in regard to remakes, but it is frustrating as it is to see a director’s own individual spin on things, watching a movie that has been edited for broadcast or basic cable television makes it even more irritating because of all the edits. It’s one reason why I love the streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and VuDu. No edits which is how movies really should be. Thankfully I have not seen too many of Jackie Chan’s movies get butchered when it comes to edits but I have seen it with plenty of others.
