The Sega 32X was an add-on for the Sega Genesis. Released in late 1994, it was Sega's attempt to keep the Genesis alive and kicking. It didn't quite turn out that way. What ended up happening, was that the system got lots of hate (it still does) and Sega suffered big time. I'm not going to go through the whole story of how this thing was made, but I will tell you this. It was the remains of the then being developed Sega Saturn, back when it was going to be a cartridge based system. So is the 32X a decent add-on? Does it deserve all the hate it gets? Read on the find out!

Console Design C+: The Sega 32X looks great on its own, it resembles a powerful car motor. However, it looks like an ugly leech when attached on to the Genesis, most notably the model 2. One major problem with the system. Is how annoying it is to hook it up. Not only does it have its own power adapter (makes sence) but it also has a separate mini din cable, that links it to the Genesis, without it. The games will have a missing sprite layer. Mainly the important one.

Toughness B+: The 32X is very durable, but 2 mini white belts. Come lose easily, and trick people into thinking the 32X is broken. Its an easy fix, but it gets annoying.

Games C: The 32X only had 36 US released cartridge games. There were 4 CD based games, but those in my opinion really don't count. The 32X might have a small library, but this is compensated for the great games that are within its small library. Tempo, Knuckles Chaotix, and Pitfall the Mayan Adventure, are decent platformers. Space Harrier, and Afterburner are great arcade shooters. Virtua Racing is a good racer, Primal Rage, Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat 2, and Cosmic Carnage are good fighters. NBA jam, and NFL Quarterback Club are good sports games. There are more great games of course. Like Shadow Squadron, and Metal Head. For those of you who love RPGS, and strategytitles. You are sadly out of luck. The 32X had no US released RPGS, or strategy games.

Graphics B+: For an add-on, the 32X has some amazing graphics. The system can display thousands of colors. It can render both flat shaded polygons well and texture mapped polygons with a bit of difficulty, it can also do some neat things with the sprites. Like scaling and rotation. The 32X can also display for more sprites then the Genesis. Something the Genesis was already good at got even better. For its time though, the 32X, wasn't amazing. For an add-on, yes, but for the time. More powerful systems, like the Sega Saturn, Sony Playstaion, and Nintendo 64 were on the horizon. Still, many games on the 32X show what the system can do.

Sound B-: Aside from, adding real drum sets, and improving digitized samples. The 32X didn't improve the sound of the Genesis by a whole lot.

Affordability, and Collectablity B-: The Sega 32X is a good system to collect for. Getting the whole system library is easy, with only 3 rare titles. 2 released in the USA, and 1 released in Europe. Those rare games, are not the best the 32X can offer. With all the good, overlooked titles the system has. The 32X is good system to collect for. The units them self's are dirt cheap. However finding everything needed to hook it up can run you into trouble.

G@mehe@d : Nice review. I appreciate the detail that you tried to put into it.

So just to be clear, when you reviewed this, did you actually physically plug the 32x into your Genesis and run it?

Personally, I hate it when people refer to the 32x as a console. It was a console add-on. I know they acted like it was an all new experience, but most of the games weren't that much better graphically than the Genesis counterparts. (There was like one or two exceptions) Honestly the only way you got graphics that were that much better, is if you were playing the 32x Sega CD games which we all know were a cluster ______

To answer your question. Yes I own a Sega 32X, and I have it plugged onto my Genesis. I almost never take it off, unless I play Virtua Racing on the Genesis. For the white belt problem, I had to take apart my 32X, and reinsert the belts. No big deal, but it was aggravating.

Jordanv78 : Seriously, whose idea was that? First, they added the CD which was a huge failure of stupid gimmick games to show off movie technology. Then they added the 32X which was a horrible add-on of games that were much worse than the genesis games. Then they thought, hey, just in case there were some gamers suckered into buying both of these bad add-ons, lets get a CD 32X library of games. Oh SEGA, the mistakes you've made.

And gnoemed, I really don't know how to spell your name. Its cool that your doing this, in honor of the AVGN, I was thinking of doing a few of these.

Well I really enjoyed this. I haven't seen any console reviews on here. The 32x is not as cheap as you think. Lately it has became a lot more expensive for some reason. I actually gave 50 bucks for mine. Oh and the car thing you said, I always thought that when plugged into a model 2 that it looks like a car lol.

GenesisJunkie : Wow, 50 dollars is a lot of money for a 32X. Was it the system itself, or did it come with all the wires? Mine was expensive because it came with all the hookups, a Genesis, a controller and 5 games. It cost about 80 dollars.

G@mehe@d : It had all three of its cords and was in a beautiful condition. You see em on eBay and Amazon now with out cords for around 40. I have no clue why they are getting more expensive but they are. It seems kinda funny to pay 50 bucks for something they were selling for 20 in the on sell bin lol.

Well great to see a review of a console!
I got one catching dust in the attic I pull it out every once and a while and play games on it.
It cost about 65 dollars with some games at a garage sale.

Pretty great review, but like Jordan said, the 32x is pretty much an add-on for the Genesis, and people does get confused about it for a console, although they're different games if you add the 32x in the Genesis and it has it's own power plug to plug into the wall.

And two, that does create a big wire mess, and you got wires everywhere like spaghetti.

I have seen the AVGN videos about the 32x and the Sega CD and it creates a mess.

IgorBird122 : The wire mess isn't bad when you don't have a Sega CD. I have the wires organized, so I really don't see them.

This is a great review! I really like how you added a lot of detail for the people that have never even heard of the system. In my opinion, the console was a complete failure. It had a very limited amount of games for it, and they were really bad. But, enough of my opinions, great review! Keep up the good work!
