A spin off is just a game that is not part of, and a different genre than the main series. My recommendation of a Pokemon spin off would be Mystery Dungeon.

and there are many more that are just a single game in their spin off.
and for hacks there are lots of hacks and their seems to be a new one created almost all the time some really good, Some terrible, and ones that are even said and uploaded by the creator that it is still a beta and work is still being done with it. One uncompleted but outstanding Pokémon hack game is Ash gray. A terrible hack game I would recommend you stay away from is Dark cry, stay FAR away from that game,

Well in my opinion the Rescue team spinoffs are the best well the ones before the new one that can out recently second best would be colliseum and XD those had a great story for a Pokemon console RPG.
