I normally hold the door for people; I don't do it for any particular reason or for praise, I just do it automatically. So today I had to stop at the convenience store to buy a pack of cigs before work. On the way out, this lady in a power suit with tight hair and stiletto heels come towards the door as I was heading out. I automatically held the door for her, and brrrrrrrrrr the look she gave me. Frozen fire, that's the best way to describe it. Then she sniffed, stuck her nose in the air, and marched through like she was the Queen of Sheba or something. I swear I heard her heels grinding into the poor linoleum floor. As far as I can figure, she was some kind of nazi-feminist and I'd just mortally offended her sense of equality. Or...something.*

I'm not dissing ladies; this was a very bizarre and unusual encounter. Most of the time people just mumble 'thanks', if they bother to say anything at all, and I go on with my day and don't think twice about it. But this one made me stop and think about it.

So, my question to you all: do you hold doors for people? Is there some unspoken rule about who you do and don't for? Like, guys, do you always do it for the ladies but never for your buds?

*This is not in any way shape or form an attack on feminist, Nazis, or women. Just to make that clear. I have no problem with women or feminists, Nazis are fine as long as they keep their stupidity to themselves** . It's just the combination that seems to cause me trouble.

**That, just so you are clear, was a clear attack on Nazism. Hope on one here is a Nazi.

I was always taught by my parents that you hold the door for an elderly person, or a woman. This is something that I always do without fail.

I also always give up my seat on the EL to pregnant women or elderly people. It's just right.

I guess it all depends on how you are raised.

I always open the door for other people. It's just something that my parents told me I should do. I do if for basically anybody. There are some cases where I won't do it for a guy, but it's usually just because he got it first.

It's just common courtesy so of course I do it. If I see someone coming up behind me, I at the very least make sure the door stays open long enough for them to grab it without having to yank it open again from the beginning.

I hold the door for people all the time. Even if I don't stay there long enough for them to pass me I alway's throw the door open to they can grab it. I never expect other people to hold the door for me though, so it's a pleasant suprise when someone does.

I hold the door open for people of whatever gender, age, or... pregnancy status as long as they are not too far away. When I go through the door, I do a quick look back, and if people are no more than 10 feet away and not going super slow, I will hold the door. If they are a great distance away, I figure they can handle themselves and move on with my life.

I dislike it when people do not even say thank you for holding the door or even a nod of the head (and if I happen to recognize a repeat offender, such as when I am at work, I may just stop holding the door for them at all), but I can get on with my day just fine without such a petty recognition.

ruesen : you forgot to close brackets just saying

As for the topic, I always hold the door for someone, as long as it isn't one of the douche-like people who go around like they own the place.

I hate when someone holds the door open for me and I'm like a mile away from the door. Unless I'm carrying something and my hands are full, of course. I just always feel awkward otherwise, and I hurry up so that I don't make them wait all day. And then it's like, I could've walked at my own pace and relaxed and opened it for myself.

But if someone's close enough I always make sure to hold it open for them, or push it so that it stays open for longer and they manage to get in.

I don't remember ever being taught or told by my parents to open doors for people. I'm from South Dakota, so pretty much everyone does it. I'll hold the door open for any gender or age of people because if I'm there and they're there, you might as well. Also some doors are heavy, stupid, or it just helps the flow of traffic. I also have been known to wait push the door back behind me and let someone get through. I don't really do it for the praise as much as it's just the right thing to do. It seems like it would take longer not to sometimes, haha.

As for expecting people to hold the door open, I guess I don't, for the most part. I remember one time when I was in Florida visiting my in laws I went somewhere and had my daughter with me, and I was just carrying her in her carseat (which are pretty heavy and awkward to hold) and some guy let this door slam right in my face and it smacked my daughter's carseat. It didn't bother her any, but it's like, frickin' really, guy? I know he saw me because we were walking up to the door together and he got there first, which is fine, so I stood aside to let him through and he looked like he was gonna hold it so I'm like cool. And then he didn't. That's the only time I remember ever being frustrated about it. But besides that, unless you're on crutches or you're so pregnant you can hardly walk or something, I think it's immature to expect someone to open the door for you.

I always hold the door open for other people, I figure it's common courtesy.
I don't need other people to hold it open for me. And most people don't, usually I sneak through when they were holding it for someone else.

I don't expect it from anyone and I definitely wouldn't expect it from anyone. Though I do open the door for someone if they are in the vicinity of 15 feet from the door.

Yeah, I always hold the door for someone. Even when I'm trying to get into a restaurant or something, and a group of 20 people come in or out or something, and I'm sitting there for a completely awkward amount of time. It just feels weird to not hold the door open. Whenever I open a door, I take a glance over my shoulder to see if someone is near me, and if they're close, I'll stop in my tracks and hold it for them, but I try not to if they're far enough away that they'd have to speed up to avoid feeling bad. Then I just kind of give the door an extra toss and continue on.

Why, of course I hold the door for people! It's the polite thing to do. I expect them to do the same for me, also. I like having people say "thank you" and them thinking that I'm nice. Gah, i probably sound like a dork right now

I do it sometimes. I do it for complete strangers because they appreciate it, but I don't expect it of others. I mean it would be nice but some people are not like me and don't like to help others. But I guess it's just a common courtesy thing and some people don't have good manners.

I always do it..... when I get to a door. But usually I stay behind my mom when in public (DON'T ASK) so she usually gets the door before me. At school I do it when a Teacher needs to come in and students are at doors.
I don't expect people to hold the door, but it still seems kind to me when they do. But I NEVER trust students with the door. In fact, the other day when I was walking out of Math class the moron in front of me rushed through the door instead of holding open for me, so I got the smack to the face.

Well it depends. If you are in the cold and rain walking somewhere the yeah I would expect someone to hold the door. I do it.
But what I really don't like is when people might you wait outside and don't let you in somewhere.

I usually hold the door open for anyone when they are fairly close to the door, and occasionally when they are a couple yards away. I mean, come on, what harm does it do to put your back against a door and wait a few seconds?

I expect it to happen from most people. I mean, I don't expect it like an old man expects something. I simply just make a very faint "oh" sound and open the door myself.
I usually hold the door open for anyone when they are fairly close to the door, and occasionally when they are a couple yards away. I mean, come on, what harm does it do to put your back against a door and wait a few seconds?

thudricdholee : Well most of the time when I do go out people normally hold the door for me. I’m disabled so I can be a little slow sometimes moving around. If I am inside a place and I see someone I’ll hold the door for them. It’s just the right thing to do and even though some people may not appreciate an act of kindness like that, not everyone will be like that. Perhaps this woman was having a bad day or something. We’re all human after all.
