I wouldn't hide so much as fortify myself on the second floor of a house with all the stairways broken. That way they couldn't come up and eat me. 

I do like the cardboard box plan though. Sounds well thought out.

I would hide in the following places:

Are you fearing a Zombie Apocalypse??

Anyway having played Left for Dead, I wouldn't be safe hiding anywhere, however, I liked the idea of staying on a farm. Not only for the land to farm on, but also because of the low population. 

If a remote island with a active military base was available then I would defiantly take this option.

I really think it depends on what kind of zombies it would be. Do you mean the slow-moving zombies or the faster ones that are more functioning?

In general I think that an open layout type of house would be horrible to hide in since it's one really big space and a person would need to keep track of, and control, all access points. Also a house with a source of food nearby would be essential, possibly a superstore liker Wal-Mart?

Also I do not think that using anything over a first floor is a good idea because what if a person fell when leaving through the window?

  I am not sure. Some zombie movies say that they can swim. others say they can use weapons or climb things like trees and bridges. with this in mind I would safely say that there is no escape from zombies unless you took off in a plane with enough fuel to last a lifetime.
