Today, SONY has announced that they have discontinued the production of the PS2 console, effectively ending the 6th generation of console gaming that started with the Dreamcast in 1999. We are now in the 8th Generation, which began handheld with the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, and began with consoles with the Wii U in 2012.

The PS2 is the longest running console of all time, lasting nearly 13 years. It's the second highest selling console of all time, which was beaten by the Nintendo DS last week.

I didn't know they were still in production..don't get me wrong though, I love the ps2. There are lots of great games for the system. I'm glad production stopped though. It is necessary. Still, it's sad that the 6th gen has effectively ended..but now there's a huge batch of classic games waiting to be played.

Will it had to end sometime. PS2 is a great system. I thought it was Sony did a fabulous job on it. It had great games( including Madden 10,Star wars force unleashed and soul caliber). But all good things come to a end sadly. GOOD BYE PS2.

I'm kind of sad to see it go, but I agree that it's probably time. It's past its time. I also second the hope that they get some more of the PS2 games available on the PS3; I really miss playing them, but I have a limited amount of space and I had to choose a system to keep.

Well, I really will miss not seeing as much PS2 stuff, and I will hold on to my PS2 and it's games for as long as possible. Hopefully if I ever have kids sometime in the future,then I will get to let them see the console.But they are not touching that thing until they are at least 6,I don't want them destroying it.

I for one honestly didn't know it was STILL being produced. Now that I know it has indeed ended, I too am waiting for the update to allow me to play PS2 games on the PS3, Nya~.

I was pretty disappointed to find out about this actually, I had been planning to buy a new PS2 for a while, so that I would have a newer console and a backup, but it looks like that won't be happening now.

Seeing this thread surprised me as to this day I still play on my PS2 even though I have an xbox 360 Indigo Prophecy is what has made PS2 the best game system m I have ever played on. This is saddening to know for sure that it has ended. The original Kingdom Hearts alos impacted my view of PS2 a lot but it's hard for me to find any Kingdom hearts where I live. PS2 will always be an amazing memory and I will probably continue to play on it for years to come.

It's amazing how long this consoles lifespan lasted. I remember how excited I was when I got one for christmas from my GF the year it launched in the US. An amazing console for it's time with some really great games.
