The leaves are changing.  There's a crispness in the air.  Apples are picked and bonfires are lit and we all start drinking darker, Octoberfest-y beers (if you're of age!).  College football and NFL are in full swing and the temperature nosedives into the 40s at night.  Soon, it'll be the 30s and we're gonna have frost warnings.

And the air smells so good.  It smells like nothing else in the world.  If you have never experienced autumn in a snow-bound state or province, well, you're missing out.

But why does it smell that way?  And what does that smell make you think of?

I think it smell so good, because of all the fresh air. Also it not to hot or to cold like in spring. The smell make me think of the forest in the world.

It probably has to do with there not being as much humidity in the air, and its also not cold enough for the sweet fragrances leftover from summer to be gone. Thus, for this short period of the year, we get the best of both worlds and weather that is very comfortable to be outside in. Agreed on the leaves changing part too, it can be a spectacular sight to take in. When I was younger, I used to do a lot of fishing at this time iof the year. Taking the boat ride and seeing masses of forest in the transition stage was cool to see, even if the fish weren't biting

I didn't know Fall had a smell to it, but I'll say the air smells and feels pretty calm. Nothing too extreme weather wise yet, its just starting to cool off, and the leaves are changing. It looks, smells, and feels great, really.

Oh man, I love the way fall smells.  I don't think it's JUST the smell though...it's everything that creates the awesome autumn ambiance.  For an example, the cool air, the smell of the leaves, the rustling of the wind through tree branches, and even the way the sky light up and the sun sets.  It's as though the whole planet is getting ready to relax before some great nap.  Everything seems so peaceful.

I have no idea why Fall smells so good. I know I enjoy it though; definitely my favorite of the four seasons. It's the prettiest and most comfortable. I think Spring or Summer wins the best smells competition though. When the Honeysuckle are ripe, definitely.

I think it's because the weather isn't as hot as Spring and Summer. And adding heat to smoggy skies make it not as fresh smelling, if that makes sense? And it seems to have more snow and rain in the colder seasons so maybe that helps clear the sky and mixed with the cooler weather it makes it smell nicer. That's just an observation. Could be others reasons why. LOL.
