Definitely Sonic. I've been playing his games since I was 2 years old and am very fond of the series. It's been around for me for 12 years. I still have a Sega Genesis in the back room of my house and I play it all the time.

Sonic is better. Although I don't like his speed all that much, he has better attacks. Mario's recovery isn't as good Sonic's, and Sonic also has a good spam attack. Plus Mario has the F.L.U.D.D., which doesn't do anything. Really, I don't like either of them very much. I hope Mario is better in SSB4, and they give him a good down-b, or a completely new one, like a ground pound.

I don't play as either one of them much, but I would say sonic, you can se is speed to your advantage, he is faster, he has quick attacks and can recover quickly. Plus I like him better than mario, but I really don't use either one very much when I play the game. If I choose between Mario and Sonic, I would more go for Mario than sonic, even know I like both characters in the game and they both fight pretty good, but I’m sticking with Mario.

While I agree that Sonic is faster and more able to pile on damage quickly, I feel more comfortable playing as Mario. He's a simple, all-around character that doesn't mess around, and he really packs a punch.

If I had to choose, it'd be Mario. He seems to be a better choice of moves. Simple and not all over the place. Nothing wrong with Sonic's moveset, but his speed is all over the place and the same goes for his final smash. He's just too slippery.
