You have to push the key that is assigned as the Select button. Double click on the screen to bring up the control configuration. Make sure that the Select button is assigned to a key. If it is, make sure you are pressing the right key. I just tried it, and I have no problems getting to the continue password screen.

That's strange usually passwords do work, but if they don't. Use save states, push f2 to save, and f4 to load. So passwords are not even needed.
