When I lived with my mother, I didn't really have to be told to clean my room. I was the clean one. Although, even when my room was a bit messy, it was kind of hard to notice when she saw my bothers room. For example, there was one time he had a bowl of milk sitting in his room for over a week, as well as a McDonalds cup that had a little bit of pop left in it, which he used to put the rest of his burger patty inside. That was soaking in that pop for a longer time than the spoiled milk bowl (again, those were not separate occurrences). So when you have that in the house, it is kind of hard to worry about a room that might have some video games on the floor and controllers hanging out.

I have always lived by the rule to just clean stuff up as I go so I didn't have to waste a day cleaning up all the stuff that I let go for however long. Seems to work out better for me that way.

I'm rarely told to clean my room because normal it's always in top shape(clean & spotless) already. But occasionally when I am told to clean it I clean it thoroughly and make sure there isn't a thing out of place and since I have my own bathroom in my room I make sure the toilet and all is cleaned above standard and the shower and floors and such are spotless.
