I am in favor of nuclear energy. It's definitely one of the better energy options out there. I feel like many are still scared of nuclear, which is why it has been not talked about very much. I'd like us to resume discussion. Pardon the general statements, it's been a few years since I had to learn about the subject. 

NotJon : I completely agree with you. The Fukishima disaster really set us back quite a few years in terms of Nuclear energy, and for no reason other than poor timing. If that had happened just two years later there would have been--I think it was--four or five new nuclear power plants operating in the United States alone, and we would have thought it was a terrible disaster still, but I think if there were more of a public awareness of nuclear energy in America at least, we would have had an easier time of overlooking a once-in-a-million chance like this.

The main problem with Nuclear energy is that nobody really knows about it, people seem to only hear about the terrible meltdowns that occur, because when a nuclear plant goes bad, oh boy does it. But nuclear energy is actually one of the safest sources of energy we have. Coal plants have way more disasters than nuclear plants, however they don't devastate a whole tri-county area when they do.

Not only that, but it's also one of the cleanest power sources available to us, disregarding wind energy--which is erratic at best. There are no green house gas emissions, it has minimal impact in the environment, compared to wind power which needs acres of windmills and flat-ish land. It's also super cheap. I think I read that in terms of dollars-per-kilowatt, once the plant is already built and paid off, a nuclear power plant is the most efficient type of producer we can currently build.

The only real problem is the nuclear waste. What do we do with that? It's really terrible to just dump that stuff in the ground, as it takes over one thousand years for the radio active elements to decay. Some have proposed launching them into space, but the cost on that is tremendous, and I don't think anyone will go for the risk of having radio active debris floating around in our atmosphere should the rocket malfunction.

I guess it's just a pipe-dream, but just so you know, if you live in Florida or Georgia, and I think a couple other states, you're actually currently paying for a power plant to be built "Some time in the future". But the power plants these "Nuclear Energy Recover Costs" were instated to build have been cancelled in the wake of Fukishima. Legislators are currently working on getting your money back, but electric companies are fighting back hard.

thenumberone : I think he's referring to the fact that it doesn't pump carbon dioxide and other green house gasses into our atmosphere. Also they have very secure facilities for disposing of the radio active nuclear refuse.

Not really, you cant 'dispose' of nuclear waste and the containers degrade before the contents do.

I'm afraid my survey wasn't very helpful (your questions were worded crazy and very hard to answer). However, now your teacher has more to sift through and it looks like you did more work. You're welcome, pal. =)

thenumberone : Maybe "dispose" wasn't exactly the right word, but the sites that they use to contain nuclear waste are actually really safe, and in areas that already have very little vegetation and wild life anyway. As to the containers degrading before the contents... That is true, if the containers are not kept up, they will degrade before the contents, but that's ONLY if they are not repaired regularly, which they are.

And regardless, the amount of environmental impact from the nuclear waste is still less than the impact of green house gasses released by coal power plants, simply because nuclear energy has less waste per kilowatt.

(By the way, please don't be discouraged by what I'm saying, I'm actually really enjoying this debate, because you DO have really good points!)
