I prefer the old one because I know code.

I know some others will prefer the new one because it's supposedly easier, but sometimes the easier thing to do is learn code.

That said, I prefer a lot of things about the new one.

I like the old editor better.

It's not that the new one is complicated or anything, but loading it all really slows down my computer.

I only use the new one if I have to do some sort of special editing and I don't know the code for it.

You should probably refer to it as the "advanced layout editor" instead of old layout editor. The old layout editor had no ability to save multiple layouts, no ability to sell or name layouts etc...

I'm working on the "advanced layout editor" throughout the night and by tomorrow you should see a few new features on it including some error reporting to help debug issues with your layout.

As for the CSS editor aka the newbie layout maker, its really made for newbies who don't know code. If you know code then I doubt you would use it or like it much since you are pretty limited.
