my whole life I've listened to rock and metal but one day a me and a friend got into a discussion about it. he said they may be christian but do they show it? does they way they live life glorify god or show an example to others? I'm unsure of what he means and would like to know.

I suppose it depends on what context you put the metal/rock in. But for the most part, I think rock bands can still be very devout Christians, despite the music they play. You can sometimes listen to the lyrics and see what kinds of beliefs they have behind it.

I understand what you're saying, that music that talks about "Hell" and "death" and things of that nature does not sound godly. But like I said, there are songs that stray away from those meanings and still fall under "metal and rock." It's hard to generalize a statement like "Rock and metal are ungodly."

Its funny you see symbols of cross and they have many religious names for bands more then any music out there

This is the album artwork of Demon Hunter, a Christian Death Metal band. Their lyrics are a reflection on the personal wars we all face against sin, they're dark songs, but they are thought provoking, and clearly religiously based. The reason I'm posting this is that it shows you can't say All metal or rock music is a sin' because this is a clear example of God using that very style of music to touch the lives of many people who might otherwise have been left without a route to hear the word of God. Demon Hunter has become not just leaders in Christian metal, but big names in mainstream as well, appearing on MTV2s Headbangers Ball repeatedly, once even as the hosts. They have used metal to spread the word of God to far more people that need to hear it then hymns would. (Hymns are beautiful, but unless you're already religious, you don't tend to listen to them.)

What you might be asking instead is 'Are Christian members of secular bands sinning by being in secular bands?' While the lifestyle of some rockstars is certainly not without its share of sinning, since there is nothing wrong with the music style itself, they still can live Christian lives, they may just be forced to deal with more temptation than otherwise.
