I haven't actually BEEN trick-or-treating since I was like 14, but when I went, I always loved getting Kit-Kats, Reese's and Snickers. =P

As far as giving I'd have to go with trick to scare and freak people out. I'd rather receive a treat as opposed to getting scared because I don't like that feeling of "surprise".
