Well seeing as people you are referring to are calling it "Stupid Cartoons", I probably wouldn't be offended. But my mom calls it "Gay Anime" or "Gay Japanese Cartoons", which at that point I get kind of annoyed. Seeing as she watches retarded Sci-Fi movies that have dumb stories, bad acting, bad CG effects, and only 1 decent actor (Lou Diamond Phillips- - but that's besides the point). And me and my brothers watch anime/read manga a lot, so I hear that/get annoyed a lot.

I mean i wouldn't start an all out war, but i would ask the right questions...like why she thinks that...if she compares them to Blues Clues, she needs to see some Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Darker Than Black..some really rough stuff. Then again, she's probably thinking about the kiddy stuff like Bakugan. Im not a huge anime fan, but i do watch some from time to time.

Personally, I do get offended. It really bugs me that people put anime in the same category as some little kids show. (They probably just watched 4Kids and thought it was like Dora the Explorer.) I know people have their opinions and such, but they need to give really, english-subtitled anime a try. There many different genres to pick from; I'm sure they'd find something they like.

Yes, if I watch Bleach in the living room my mom automatically says "Why do you watch this dumb crap", because it's awesome.

Nope, they have an opinion, may be a stupid one, but it's what they think.

My mom took me to see the first 2 Naruto movies in the special theater showings, and she liked the first one. She is a fan of Death Note and Inuyasha when she has to watch anime.

My step dad that I don't see anymore liked Yu-Gi-Oh and Inuyasha.

My sister, likes all of the above and Pokemon. (And Scott Pilgrim if it counts)

My brother only likes Yu-Gi-Oh.

Our family has 3 years worth of Shonen Jump.

We're pretty much a family that loves our anime and manga.

My mom classifies Family Guy as a kids show, because it's so stupid, but she sees the intellectual designs of amime, and she thinks of it as an illustrated drama/adventure thing.

Well, some anime is stupid. The only reason I like it is... well, because it's anime, and I am a creepy otaku.
HOWEVER, there is a lot of good anime out there, and if someone calls it stupid... well, they're kinda dumb too. There is just so much anime out there, how can't you find something that you'll like?

A lot of people in my classroom always say anime/manga are stupid an are for babys but I don't really listen to them because I say that it is an opinion they are making not a fact and some anime contains swear words a few inappropriate scenes and I don't see what is so babyish about.

Well someone can't judge something if they haven't watched a few full episodes of the anime first hand. If they base their opinion off of nothing, but a few minutes or seconds of the anime they aren't getting the full effect. Sure some of them are pretty close to cartoons, but you can't really say something is another without basing your evidence on something that is actually there. After the person has seen a few episodes, and doesn't like the anime, then their opinion is legitimate.

Frankly, I'm shocked at the open-mindedness to alternate opinions that people seem to have in this forum. I came here expecting a bunch of *mindless* anime fans who think anime is the supreme overlord of all animation and deny all of it's flaws and refuse to accept any other forms of animation that aren't Japanese and also think they love Japan and their culture for watching anime without ever actually even going there themselves and seem to not accept any children's anime on cartoon network like bakugan and Pokémon as anime and call it fake. It makes me proud to be a part of the Vizzed community. *sniffle* And I would generally get somewhat offended when people call anything I like stupid, but I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. I don't mind it when people call anime "cartoons" though unlike some people. And a lot of anime actually IS stupid and falls prey to several generic cliché's that make it stupid. So I don't care if a lot of people call it stupid, because a lot of it IS cliché and stupid, but there are quite a few good ones as well. Most people don't know what to really expect when they watch it though and the chances of them finding a stupid one with a lot of terribly over-used to death cliché's is high and that might be what they base their opinion off of sadly, but I think that if you showed them some really good and original ones, then if they aren't completely narrow-minded, they might concede a little bit and say something like, "Okay, not ALL anime is retard... But I still don't like it >" But if they dislike something about anime in particular like the art style or the voices or the stories, then that's all there is to it.

I don't really get angry or anything. I tend to watch them alone anyways, otherwise in my house I get weird looks from w/e noises or scenes pop up that someone sees. I do get a little irritated when people try to make fun of the language by making random sounds and trying to pass it off as Japanese ( My brother and Mom's boyfriend do this a lot.)

Honestly, a little bit. My mother hates a majority of it and she's hardly even given it a chance. =/ Now I don't tend to watch much of it myself, but most of what I've seen of it has been really good.

The way I see it, your mom probably hasn't seen them herself, or she doesn't understand how you feel about it. People will tend to look down on things they don't know about, especially if the world around them looks down on it as well.

I will admit that there are some anime out there that fall into that category (most ecchi, and some comedy and action), but for the most part, anime is just like any other TV show. If you need a good example, just go watch Clannad and how beautifully written it is.

I can see why people don't like it. It is made by a very different culture who often have different views of entertaining that Americans do. But the people who like them tend to understand and appreciate the value of anime. I think that "stupid" is a little harsh. Really, they are saying that it is just not their cup of tea. That is fine, but I don't get offended. I tend to get offended when I hear people insult the culture itself by using anime as their argument. Actually, not personally offended because I am not from Asia, but upset that people would use their cartoons to call them stupid. 

Everyone is entitled to an opinion so I wouldn't get offended maybe a little irritated but not enough to make me angry.
 Also if someone doesn't like anime get them to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann then if they still dislike anime..... then theirs no help for them. I would also feel bad for them because that anime is epic!

Now my biological mom loved seeing my brother and I get into the japanese culture.  She watched it with us and let us play video games.  It was a lot of fun back then.  Heveans she even let us see some adult anime at times.

Now with my step mom it's the EXACT opposite! She goes as far as to throw out any anime/manga/video games that I have when I leave the house for doctor apointments.....  All of my prized possessions like my hand signed by Yuki Kajiura coppy of Xenosaga 2 soundtrack plus bonus tracks were thrown out!!!  I had special wall scrolls, cds, and whole series thrown out.  Even rare no longer distributed games that I loved!!!  I can't get those back!!!!!!!  Finaly I got my minister to talk to her about it all because it was not right to throw out such valuable things!

Now she lets me watch anime on my computer and buy manga at times for my birthdays or christmases.  But she does think anime is "spawned from the devil and has evil messages for the watchers".  She's even crazy enough to think my little sister can 'see' what I do on the computer when she is asleep.....

Back to topic usually I have no problem with peoples ideas.  I know my brother is no longer interested in anime but he and I never argue about it.  He understands the he himself got me into anime and that is why I like it so much.  I also understand no one in public will talk about anime or the japanese culture.  It is taboo to talk about those things in public. 

My brother teases me, calling anime "hentai." It pisses me off just because he teases me about it so often and doesn't even watch anime himself. My mother thinks it's weird that I watch "Japanese TV shows" as she says, since I watch my anime in Japanese. Other than that, I don't have any problems.
