I don't think so... I think most people just view it as a time to get presents and see cool lights and christmas trees. Never really hear anything religious unless Santa Claws counts as religious.

JigSaw : (It is Claus actually)... Satan Claus/Claws, lol , that is religious, I might make a thread on this.

Now...let me say it this way:

IT'S CALLED MARKETING GIMMICK !!!

It is, actually, suppose to be a religious holiday (celebrating the birth of Jesus), but in the modern world it is not treated as one, it is treated similar to thanksgiving and black Friday, to buy more stuff for family and friends (which is good...but overrated) ) and to get together, which is combined with new year actually, not really Christmas (I know because of Chinese New Year, Google that).

I actually can't think of something someone will do on Christmas that actually really celebrates the birth of Jesus, other then gifts.

You see, Jesus got gifts as a baby because of reasons I forgotten so that is why we get gifts on Christmas.

P.S: I have a habit of spellign Christmas as Chirstmars, why ?

Christmas is for sure a religious holiday. I mean we are supposed to be celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christmas is more than just that though. It's about enjoying time with your family and friends. Sharing joy, happiness and togetherness.

I like to call him Santa Claws puts a interesting spin on it For those most part, the fairy tale of Christmas was created as a ploy to get people to buy ones products. If this holiday was meant for Jesus it sure has took a wrong turn somewhere because all I see are ads buy this or buy that, 50% off here 50% off there, but no Jesus. Even non christians celebrate Christmas. Could be a religious holiday if your religious, but if your not religious its viewed as a time to splurge your money on junk

Santa is a mean man, he does not give anyone presents the parents have to get the presents and fool the children into believing that they came from him. Imaginary figure giving children presents = great way to force parents into buying stuff just to keep the fairy tale lasting. Fun as a kid yes but later in life the materialistic stuff is just junk its not what matters.

For me, the religious services begin the night before with a 2 to 3 hour Feast of the Nativity service sometime around 10 or 11 pm, depending on jurisdiction and priest. The next morning is devoted to family and whatnot, with the Nativity service and 4 hour coffee break back at Church. The crass, commercial "buy buy buy gimme gimme gimme" doesn't even factor into it.

Just my two cents.

If I recall correctly from the Boondocks, Christmas was based on a Roman holiday which consisted of gift giving among other activities...I have not researched further into it, but I will say this: in the United States, Christmas is a national holiday. Very rarely is anything religious seen in advertisements promoting Christmas and the gift buying associated with it. Santa Claus has become merely a holiday figure. Besides, Jesus most likely was not even born on this date. It's a very rough estimation.

To me it SHOULD be a religious holiday. Sadly, it seems too commercialized to feel like one anymore. Oh well, as someone who isn't religous, I don't really care about the significance of Christmas personally, but I respect that others see it as the birthdate of their savior Jesus Christ.

It's a religious holiday that has lost a lot of it's meaning to merchandising and commercialisation. In our familly i'm still glad we all come together and eat a hell of a meal in a pretty fancy restaurant because then we get to see all of each other and we can reconnect.

Kisses,
Kitty

I do think it is because for us christians it is the day that baby Jesus was born. That is why the star is put on the christmas tree to represent the star that was seen in the sky the day of his birth. To my family we of course receive presents, but the main reason my family celebrates christmas is to honor Jesus and that is why we still do our christmas plays about the birth of Jesus on christmas every year in our home.

Of course it's a religious holiday. It's the birth of Jesus Christ!
I go to church every Christmas to give thanks and praise to our creator...it is only American to do so. But Christmas is about love and being with loved ones.....

Well, at one time, Christmas was like... Thanksgiving, in a way. All of your friends and family got together and ate and conversed and had a good time.

But then, the really nice people started bringing gifts to give to people who were nice to everyone and deserved one. The one person who did this the most, I believe, was the actual "Santa Claus". But then, when people started becoming more material, and the whole world turned into more of a greedy one, EVERYBODY suddenly had to bring gifts to people. And the industries got rich off of it.

Then some guy (who is a genius, no matter how evil he is) decided to bring back the age old tale of this jolly old fat guy, and twisted it around. Suddenly, Santa became a magical guy who flew around giving gifts to everyone. And then parents, being the idiots they are, told their kids this, as a sort of "story", and also a way to get kids to behave.

When Christmas time came around, and the parent's kids actually were good, the parents were screwed and they had to buy their kids a present. Eventually everybody wanted presents, and people would get it for other people, trying to be nice and trying not to sound like a scrooge.

TL;DR, JUST KNOW THAT I DON'T BELIEVE CHRISTMAS IS THAT MUCH OF A RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY ANYMORE.

It used to be, but we (Humans) twisted it into something non religious, it's supposed to be the birth of Christ, not the day a fat guy in a flying sled gives candy and gifts to fat kids and gluttons. It's the same as Easter, we tend to screw with the logic and realism and make it turn out for our own good.

I know that all this brings people together, but it's not for the right reasons.

Not hating on Christmas, it's my favorite holiday, and I'm an Alter Server every Christmas Eve.

legacyme3 : I think this belongs in Christian Conservatives.

I think everyone here is frustrated about the commercialization of Christmas into buying gifts and stuff like that. It would be interesting of what a manager of store would say about that.

Well, it's SUPPOSED to be, anyways... of course, thanks to whoever decided that a stalker in a red suit was a good idea to commercialize the holiday started a chain reaction until now... now, it's lost all meaning. To the point where it's just become another holiday with presents and children's shows will change the name to whatever fits best ("Zipsmas" for a show about animal-vehicle hybrid things... don't ask...). It's aggravating and shows a lack of respect.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Sony Entertainment's Sing-Off (a capella contest show) Holiday CD has 7 out of 10 tracks about Christmas' true meaning .

christmas is not about giving opening presents or anything like that, its about celebration of jesus's birthday and celebration of when jesus saved us he sacrificed himself for us.
