I recommend any of the Streets Of Rage games....Altered Beast....and of course the Sonic Games. Oh yeah M.U.S.H.A. and Ranger-X are both awesome shooters if you are a fan of Shmups. Not many people remember them, but you won't be disappointed if you get either of them.
Also X-Men 2: Clone Wars was one of my favorite games as a kid. That game is just pure awesomeness. It's everything that an X Men game should be. The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin is a fun game for the genesis. Actually all of the comic book franchised games are good for the genesis.
I'm also a fan of the Mickey Mouse, and donald duck games for the system. It may sound weird, but they are all fun sidescrolling games with good graphics. Another sweet game you need to look into is Haunting Starring Polterguy. It's a pretty unique game. There's nothing I can really compare it to, all I know is that it's a lot of fun.
