Ok, so my school had an Honor Roll assembly a couple of days ago. I got Honor Roll, as always, but then the Principal's Honor Roll (4.0 GPA and up) students came up. After that, they gave a special prize to students with the highest GPA out of all the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, Wanna know what they got? A FREAKIN iPad! I wanted it so bad (I would never pay for it, but I'll take it for free  ) My best friend got it since she had the highest GPA out of all the sophomores.

Personally, I find that appalling. I mean, as much as I hate to say it, getting good grades in school is no longer just your own drive... now it's all about getting rewarded for it. When I was in middle school and got good grades, I got a pat on the back, a piece of paper, and stares of nerd from my peers who did not get these grades.
Now in this day and age, you are awarded even in high school for doing well in school. This is fine. But to get an iPad? RIDICULOUS! If anything it should be something a little more reasonable, like a gift card to a local business or something. idk, could just be jealousy speaking. I just don't think giving away iPads for good grades is the best a school can do. If they have the money to give away iPads, they should improve the school system.

vizwiz123- In 5th grade I had honor roll status, from there it went down hill  . I think if things had gone differently I would have had honor roll in high school, but as it went, I never even attended high school, but a "probation school" from 8th to 12th.
I think the reward system is a motivation for achievement, but from what you're saying it just sounds like the school is rubbing it in the faces of the "less intelligent". . vizwiz123 : Well, up until I hit a rough point in my life I was consistently an honor role student and rarely missed any school unless I had a doctor’s appointment or the obvious occasional bug etc. When I hit high school was pretty much when I went downhill and eventually out. I use to aim for honor role even to the point where if I had any home work I would do it before I left school and turn it in before I left for the day.
I’ve never seen a school hand out an reward like that for kids applying themselves… I guess it has it’s benefits but also it’s obvious drawbacks. the smart students should be rewarded for their good grades.... but handing out electronics to a few students who did well seems unfair. I think the money could have been better spent. Hopefully they got those for free or something.

jmc1097 : Maybe it’s me but if their going to be giving away something that expensive, maybe they should give away cell phones also. I have never owned a cell phone but that seems to be popular now of days. I still don’t condone it by no means but some cell phones are relatively cheap from what I understand and could actually save the schools money in the long run.

One time, my old choir had a competition to sell "pizza cards." I ended up selling the most, and my parents convinced me to choose the most valuable item of the lot, which was a certain digital camera (worth about $600). That camera is now worth beans, as it only could take about 15 pics at a time and has very few MPs compared to todays camaras. Stinks, but it happens. -------------------- |
