To students who are in college or people who have graduated from college: what are you majoring in or what did you major in? What have you liked about that area of study?

I just finished my sophomore year of college as a Social Work major. I'm really enjoying the community that's being built with students and professors! I'm also enjoying learning a lot about what I can do to advocate for justice for others.

My 1st one was Sports Management and once I finished that, I went for writing. In 3 months I hope to start grad school.

My first major was Psychology until I started taking developmental psych and realized it bores the living heck out of me and I hated it. Then I switched over to Mathematics/Teaching for my second major and then life happened and I had to drop out. So basically what the world is telling me is to not go through with college lol.

That's a question with a long answer.

I originally started studying Political Science/Economics with the intention of majoring in the latter since I've always been good at the Social Sciences and it seemed to have a stable career outlook. After taking it during my second semester, I realized the true nature of the subject is quite far from where my main interests lie as it's to a large extent a form of applied math, no matter your focus. The thought of studying it for another 3-5 years depressed me, and working with it after that even more so, especially after hearing stories from grad students. Political Science didn't interest me either as while it was something I was good at, I've grown more and more disillusioned with politics over time.

So I ended up hitting a wall that semester and dropped out of the program. It took a toll on my psyche since I had spent the past 3 or so years dead set on the idea of majoring in it and I wasn't sure what else to go for. I ended up taking a semi gap year that's still going, where I've been concentrating on something that had been a hobby of mine at the time, Language learning and linguistics. It has sort of been my way to take a break and refocus while still doing something intellectually stimulating with my time.

After a lot of thinking, I zoned in on something I had enjoyed a lot in high school but never really given much thought outside of that, namely Behavioral Sciences. It's a mix of Psychology, Sociology and Pedagogy with the option to major in one of the former. I originally discovered the program in high school but pushed it away in favor of Economics as I figured it was better to go for the program that seemed to lead to a more stable/well paying career (mistake on my part as it turns out). Right now, the idea of studying something that I know for sure I'll enjoy has me pretty motivated. I'm thinking of eventually specializing in Cognitive Psychology as that is one area I find very interesting but obviously I've yet to pick a specialization.

Tl;dr: Originally studied Political Science/Economics because of being good at it/career stability. Ended up not really liking either and sort of hit a wall mentally that I'm just now starting to get past. Took a gap year to refocus, where I studied subjects out of interest and now I'll be studying Behavioral Sciences come next semester.

zanderlex : Nice! What were you learning about when you were working on writing?

deggle : Aw man. Yeah my original major was psychology but I realized that I would be less patient with that major.

Zlinqx : That's rough. I'm glad you've found more things you enjoy so you can be ready to return to school soon! It's really cool that you decided to still keep your mind in learning mode when you were taking a break from school.

Behavioral sciences are pretty neat in my opinion. I enjoyed my psychology and sociology classes both in high school and college.

Currently a Computer Science major, finished in about a year. Was originally a Bioengineer but all of the physics was really overwhelming for a younger me. I regret the switch deeply now considering I've overcome far harder in later years and I felt as if that was my true passion, but the past is the past. I can't afford to turn back around. I can always go back later when I have a real job with a CompSci degree which brings me a lot of money and then swap careers, but I'm not thinking that long-term yet. Just need to finish this degree first.

I major in computer science, which is a bit annoying given that it requires math which I have never been that great at, my brain isn't one to keep track of things well. I do hope however I can get through it and have a nice little piece of paper that doesn't get me much of anything.

Minuano : I got overwhelmed with physics in high school and I can't imagine doing it again in college. Yeah since you're really far in your major, I think you should finish it and maybe go for another career in the distant future like you said. College is very expensive :/ I know people who have to work super hard to have the money to keep going to college.

Boured : I've never been that great at math either. Thankfully, I have already finished both classes in my major that require fun little math stuff.

I studed performing arts back then a mixture of singing dancing and acting. I really enjoyed what they had to offer despite my health issues. We had a production to do as a farewell to our class. for 3 days we has showtime to the people in the theatre. when we were practicing at the time I caught the swine flu sadly. so it took me weeks before I could come back. I was so sure I would go into more of this in my lifetime and I have never been so wrong in my life on this cause me mum reminded me I cant do it in life which.....I had to understand.

Eniitan : I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work out well, but that's cool that you got to study it for a bit. I enjoyed my drama class in high school where I got to learn about acting. And I got to be in a short play that we performed in front of the class.
